In 2003 work began on the Narragansett Bay Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)
Program in Providence, Rhode Island. In order to control up to 80 million litres of
untreated waste that flowed into Narragansett Bay each year, the Narragansett
Bay Commission (NBC) planned a system of tunnel and pumping stations to
contain the overflow.
Completed in 2008 at the value of $350 Million, Phase 1 of the project collects
up to 242 million litres of combined sewage and transfers it to a deep storage
tunnel for pumping and treatment.
Along with some 5km of 5m diametre rock tunnelling, the project included the
construction of six shafts up to 88m deep, a number of de-aeration chambers
and adits (approx. 1.2km of tunnels), and the excavation of a 36.5m x 20.7m x
20.7m pumping station cavern 30 stories underground.
The shafts include a 1.5m, 3.6m and 3.3m ventilation and access shafts. A 9.7m
and 10.5m utility and ventilations shafts, and a 10.5m operating shaft for TBM
access.
Immediate support in the rock sections of the shafts comprises pattern
rockbolting and up to 3 in of wet mix synthetic fibre reinforced shotcrete.
Drill and blast excavation of the pumping station is supported with systematic
mechanical shell rockbolting and lined with 8 in of synthetic fibre reinforced
permanent shotcrete.
