AEE 331 Heat Transfer

Homework II, 6 November, Tuesday, 17:00

1. A body of revolution with a constant conductivity k, a cross sectional area distribution of A(x) = a + bx,
where a and b are constant, and a length of L is experiencing uniform volumetric heat generation at a rate of q.
The body is insulated on the side surface (i.e. at outer radius), and the surfaces at x = 0 and x = L are subject
to constant temperatures T
1
and T
2
, respectively.
a) Assume 1-D conduction is taking place in the body, obtain an expression for the temperature distribution.
b) Obtain the location of the section which expreiences the maximum (peak) temperature within the body.
c) What are the heat uxes at the two surfaces at x = 0 and x = L?
d) By energy balance show that the entire heat rate generated within the body equals the net heat outow
from the body.
e) What is the thermal resistance of this body?
2. Repeat parts a) to d) of problem 1 for a situation in which the left surface is subject, instead of constant
surfaces temperatures, to a ow with T
,1
providing a convection coecient of h
1
and the right surface is subject
to a ow with T
,2
providing a convection coecient of h
2
.
e) For the no heat generation situation, establish the equaivalent thermal circuit and nd an expression for
the heat transfer rate through the body.
3. Consider a rod of diameter D, thermal conductivity of k, and a legth of 2L that is perfectly insulated over
a portion of its length, L x 0, and experiences convection with a uid (T

, h) over the other portion,

0 x +L. One end is maintained at T
1
, while the other is separated from a heat sink at T
3
by an interfacial
thermal contact resistance R

t,c
.
a) Sketch the temperature distribution on the T x coordinates and identify its key features (i.e. describe
what is going on). Assume that T
1
> T
3
> T

.
b) Derive an expression for the midpoint temperature T
2
in terms of the thermal and geometric parameters
of the system.
c) For T
1
= 200
o
C, T
3
= 100
o
C, and conditions provided in the schematic, calculate T
2
and plot the temper-
ature distribution. Describe key features of the distribution and compare it to your sketch of part a).
