on Who are the Paulists? Each session will be in the
church from 10:45 to 11:45am following the 9:30 am
Mass.

Enclosed in todays bulletin is a brochure that explains the
process for The Path to Sainthood cause begun in 2008.
Included in this brochure is an update on the cause and
ways for all of us to help.





POSSIBLE HECKER MIRACLE
The Diocese of Knoxville, TN announced they are
opening an inquiry regarding a possible miracle
attributed to the intercession of Fr. Hecker. Bishop
Richard F. Stika has appointed four members and officers
for the board of inquiry. This is a huge step toward
canonization and the Paulist Fathers are very excited
about this latest development. Let us join the Paulist
Fathers in praying for this latest step toward
canonization. For more information about the
canonization process, see the insert in todays bulletin.

Next Sunday, October 5 will begin the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops at the Vatican. The
theme is: The Pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization. So what is a synod?

On September 15, 1965 as Vatican II was ending, Pope Paul VI set up the Synod of Bishops. His purpose: to
make greater use of the bishops assistance in providing for the good of the universal Church. This is not collegial
governance but is meant to be a collaborating method to assist the Pope in gathering information and giving
advice. They discuss topics that are suggested to them and they make recommendations---but, they do not
settle questions or issue decrees. They do a lot of presenting and debating.

There are three types of synod assemblies:
*In an Ordinary general assembly the Secretariat collects three themes from each of the episcopal conferences
(all the bishops of a particular country or bishops assigned to a particular intere st like Liturgy, Justice issues...).
After the Secretariat has studied the proposals, he makes a recommendation to the Pope who then chooses the
topic and the agenda.
Criteria: a)that it is a universal issuenot a particular region, b) that it is pastoral, c) that it is contemporary and
urgent enough that it will move the church towards growth, d) and that it can be addressed within the allotted
time.
**Special Assemblies are limited to a certain geographical area.
***Extraordinary general assemblies are generally shorter in duration. Fewer participants consisting of heads
of the Eastern Catholic Church, presidents of episcopal conferences, three members of religious institutes and the
cardinals who head departments of the Roman Curia.

The Extraordinary Assembly we are about to witness is only the third such gathering since the creation of the
Synod in 1965. This Assembly is in preparation (gathering information) for the Synod of Bishops (Ordinary General
Assembly) to be held next October 2015. At the Assembly beginning next week (Oct. 5 -19) participants will be
presenting information gathered from the survey (Family Life) sent out to every diocese in the world from the
Vatican last fall. Each bishop decided how that survey would be conducted in his territory and sent back to Rome.

The Family Life Synod has more than 250 participants, including 14 married couples from around the world. Some
of the topics to be discussed and debated: marriage/divorce/remarriage, contraception, cohabitation. Please pray
for all the people involved.

LANDSCAPE TRIMMING & BIOSWALE
CLEAN UP
Volunteers are needed to help trim bushes and clean
the bioswale on Sat. Oct. 11 from 9am to 1pm. Come
when you can and leave when you must. Bring some
tools if you can. Pizza will be served at the end of the
project. Sponsored by the Building and Grounds
Committee.

OFFICE SPACE FOR RENT
St. Philip Neris Paulist Center has office space for rent.
The office is very pleasant with large windows that let in
natural light. The office is air conditioned and is
approximately 280 sq. ft. Utilities are included except
for telephone and internet. The rental cost is $450 per
month and insurance is required. The Paulist Center
offers on-site parking, kitchen usage and easy access to
bus line #4 for clients and/or visitors. Please contact
Jeanne McPherson at the parish office if interested.

PRAYER BOOK PROJECT
We are still looking for prayers to include in our
prayer book. The prayers do not need to be Christian
in origin. Many other traditions have beautiful
prayers that speak to our Christian hearts. Send your
prayers to Barbara barbarah@stphilipneripdx.org, to
Rose rosew@stphilipneripdx.org, or drop them in the
mail. We would like to have these ready for
November. Please submit by October 15.
