The Reorganization meeting of the
Smethport Area School District Board
of Directors was held on Monday,
December 7, 2009, in the Smethport
Area Elementary School LGI Room.
Mr. John Verolini was reelected as
President to continue his leadership of the Board to 22 years and Mrs. Anita Johnson
was reelected as Vice-President. Mr. Verolini has been a PSBA member for 32 years.
Congratulations to both! We also swore in two new board members -Connie Kane and
Jim Myers. Welcome.
 The following additions to the Support Staff Substitute list for the 2009-10
school year:

• You might be surprised to learn that, according to the Guinness Book
of Records, the largest swimming pool in the world isn't found in one of
the large industrialized nations as you might expect, but in the relatively
small South American country of Chile. Built by a mega-resort on the
ocean, the pool covers 20 acres, is more than 1,000 yards long and holds
a whopping 66 million gallons of water. Construction took five years
and cost more than $1.5 billion, and the estimated annual maintenance
cost is more than $3 million.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We recently adopted a 6-
month-old kitten from the local shelter. “Buster”
behaves very well around the kids and me, and he’s
playful and loves climbing into my lap. But when
company comes over, he runs and hides. Is this
normal? -- Sarah G., via e-mail
DEAR SARAH: This is very common behavior
from cats, particularly those that have recently
experienced a stressful situation such as being placed
in a shelter. But even cats that haven’t been exposed to
a lot of stress can do this when unfamiliar people visit.

Buster appears to have adapted well to his new
home and is comfortable with you and the children,
which is great. He’s happy and healthy. But it may
take him longer to adjust to strange new people in the
house.
During the holiday season, make things easier for
Buster by placing his food and water, his litter box and
his favorite toys and blanket away from heavily
trafficked areas of the house. A quiet room that he can
access easily is ideal. If you want to introduce him to
friends, go and pick him up and cradle him in your
arms so that he feels safe, and bring him to your
friends so they can pet him briefly and say hello.
Then, let him go. He will probably run away again,
which is fine.
Unless Buster is acting very strangely -- hissing at
familiar people, hiding for hours or not eating -- I
would not worry too much about his behavior. He may
never be friendly to everyone who walks in the door,
but over time he may adjust more quickly to new faces
and unfamiliar scents and make an appearance.

Not everyone is able to adopt a pet, but there are still
many ways you can help this holiday season. Here are
some suggestions taken from SPCA Wish Lists:
Cat litter, dry cat food, dry and canned kitten food,
puppy food, 39 gal. trash bags, 13 gal. trash bags, large
stainless steel water dishes, dog chains, leashes and
collars, hamster and rabbit food, bleach, 3x5 white and
colored index cards, liquid laundry and dish soap, paper
towels, and pet grooming aids. Monetary gifts and
volunteers are also welcomed and needed!

Your Pet May Be Missing You
(NAPSA)-Veterinarians want dog owners to know that
changes in routines and extended owner absences can sometimes
bring on unwanted behavior. If your dog has soiled your new
carpet, attacked the door molding or shredded your favorite pair
of shoes, he could be suffering from canine separation anxiety.
Fortunately, he can be helped.
Canine separation anxiety is an underdiagnosed and
undertreated condition in which animals become so upset by
their owner’s departure that they resort to what is considered bad
behavior to cope with the situation. It is estimated that
separation anxiety may affect up to 10.7 million dogs, or 17
percent (Lilly Market Research) of all dogs in the U.S.
“Separation anxiety is triggered by the owner’s absence,”
according to Barbara Sherman, DVM, a noted veterinary
behaviorist at the North Carolina State University College of
Veterinary Medicine. “It usually occurs when the owner leaves
or immediately after. Because dogs are historically pack
animals, the dog views the family as its pack and experiences
distress when separated from that family.” That stress leads to
problem behaviors, including:
• Excessive barking, whining, howling;
• Destruction, chewing, clawing or digging;
• Urinary or bowel accidents indoors;

ease the pain of separation anxiety for dogs and their
owners.

They Go Together Like...

You buy an aquarium, put some fish in it, and
you’re done, right? Wrong. For the best results, you
need to know what fish are compatible.
The type of tank you have will play a huge role in
the fish you choose. Fish bowls require a different
type of fish than aquariums. The fish you put in an
aquarium will depend upon whether it is cold or warm
water, salt water or fresh water. Some fish can start
out in an aquarium but will grow so large they will do
better in a pond.
Regardless of the type of fish you choose, there
will be a pecking order. When you shop for fish, pay
attention to the tanks. Are all the fish hiding but one?
Are all the fish crowded to one side of the tank but
one? These are signs of an aggressive fish, and you
want to steer clear of that fish. For the best results,
buy larger, more passive fish at first and progressively
add smaller aggressive fish. This will give the passive
fish some advantage over the aggressive ones.
Compatibility is key to a healthy tank
environment. In a warm water aquarium, white
clouds, neon tetras, glowlight tetras, harlequin
rasboras, fancy guppies, glass fish, ghost shrimp,
honey gouramis and corydoras catfish are ideal. These
fish are compatible with each other. Black skirts,
serapes, red eyes, black neons and silver tips do well
together in groups, as do danios, mollies, platies and
swordtails.
In a cool or warm water aquariums, tadpoles,
fiddler crabs, mystery snails, ghost shrimp and
crayfish are ideal. They are compatible with smaller
aggressive fish. Because puffer fish like to eat shrimp,
crayfish and crabs, they should not be with them.
Fantails, oranda goldfish, black moors, red and
calico telescopes, and red, red and white, calico and
red cap orandas do well together but tend to grow fast
and will need a large aquarium or a pond. Pond
comets, as well as red pond, white pond and red and
white pond comets, are not compatible with fancy
goldfish. Neither are koi, fancy koi or shubunkins.
Brackish water fish need an environment all of
their own because they can’t live in 100% saltwater or
100% freshwater. Examples of brackish water fish
include monos, mudskippers, waling catfish,
archerfish, scats, breed, bamboo and psychedelic eels,
and most pipefish.

Slow-Running Kitchen Faucet
Q: Help! The faucet on my kitchen sink
recently stopped flowing at full strength. It has
hot and cold knobs (rather than one lift control),
and neither is flowing well. I checked the shutoff
valves to both hot and cold feeds, and they are all
the way on. The rest of the faucets in the house are OK. I guess the only
good thing is that the constant drip from that faucet has stopped. What's
happening? -- Theresa in Wheeling, W.Va.
A: Since you've checked the shutoff valves under the sink (the first
step in diagnosing a flow problem), the next step is to look for what may be
restricting water flow.
The aerator attached to the faucet sometimes gets clogged with scaly
buildup, especially in areas with hard water. Unscrew the aerator (if you
must use a wrench, wrap the aerator in a cloth to prevent scratches) and
check the screen. If there's buildup, soak it in a solution of vinegar, water
and baking soda for a couple of hours, then rinse.
If that isn't it, the faucet may need maintenance. Washers in the cold-
and hot-water "stems" (the hardware underneath the knobs of a
compression faucet) deteriorate over time and must be replaced. You
mention that the faucet used to drip constantly, a clear signal that
maintenance is needed.
Replacing the washers in compression faucets takes a bit of elbow
grease but can be done. If you don't know the exact model of your faucet,
purchase several sizes of washers at the home-improvement store and
match up the old washers with the new ones to get the correct size. You
also should purchase a seat dressing tool to polish the "seat" (bottom) of
the cavity in which each stem sits.
Turn off the water at the shutoff valves (make sure it's off by
turning the faucet on). Remove the knobs by popping the top covers off
and loosening the screws, then lifting the knobs away. Loosen and
remove the valve stems. Clean them and remove the old washers, even if
they look OK; replace with new washers (aka O-rings). Insert the seat
dressing tool into each stem seat and turn just one or two times. Replace
the stems and secure the control knobs in place. Open the shutoff valves.
If water leaks around the knobs, repeat the process to make sure the new
washers are in place. If the water flow still doesn't improve, contact a
plumber.
HOME TIP: Older homes with galvanized steel pipes are prone to
suffering house-wide water pressure problems.

2. Once hair is voluminous and wavy, spray for added texture and
flexible hold.
3.Create a ponytail at the nape of the neck; only pull the hair halfway
through to create a bun and loop the ends through the elastic.
4.Wrap the remainder of the hair around the elastic and secure using a
bobby pin.
5.Using additional hairpins, grab small random sections of the bun and
pin to head until you achieve desired look. Lock in the style by spraying
with hair spray.
Christmas Traditions
Mistletoe was used by Druid priests 200 years before the
birth of Christ in their winter celebrations. They revered the plant since
it had no roots yet remained green during the cold months of winter.The
ancient Celtics believed mistletoe to have magical healing powers and
used it as an antidote for poison, infertility, and to ward of evil spirits.
The plant was also seen as a symbol of peace, and it is said that among
Romans, enemies who met under mistletoe would lay down their
weapons and embrace.Scandanavians associated the plant with Frigga,
their goddess of love, and it may be from this that we derive the custom
of kissing under the mistletoe. Those who kissed under the mistletoe had
the promise of happiness and good luck in the following year.
In Northern Europe Christmas occurred during the middle of
winter, when ghosts and demons could be heard howling in the winter
winds. Boughs of holly, believed to have magical powers since they
remained green through the harsh winter, were often placed over the
doors of homes to drive evil away. Greenery was also brought indoors to
freshen the air and brighten the mood during the long, dreary
winter.Legend also has it that holly sprang from the footsteps of Christ
as he walked the earth. The pointed leaves were said to represent the
crown of thorns Christ wore while on the cross and the red berries
symbolized the blood he shed.
A native Mexican plant, poinsettias were named after Joel R.
Poinsett, U.S. ambassador to Mexico who brought the plant to America
in 1828. Poinsettias were likely used by Mexican Franciscans in their
17th century Christmas celebrations. One legend has it that a young
Mexican boy, on his way to visit the village Nativity scene, realized he
had no gift for the Christ child. He gathered pretty green branches from
along the road and brought them to the church. Though the other
children mocked him, when the leaves were laid at the manger, a
beautiful star-shaped flower appeared on each branch. The bright red
petals, often mistaken for flowers, are actually the upper leaves of the
plant.

•Get enough sleep. People who get less sleep have a higher risk of
obesity (along with other health problems).
•Don’t eat out of habit. Mindless eating at work or in front of the TV,
