Fishbein changes to guilty pleas; sentencing set

BY KIRK DOUGAL
DHI Media Group Publisher
kdougal@timesbulletin.com
VAN WERT - The former CEO of I &
K Distributors of Delphos changed his plea
to guilty and will now face sentencing on
six counts of Attempted Violation of a Civil
Protection Order.
Robert Fishbein, 51, appeared in the
Van Wert County Common Pleas Court on
Thursday on what was supposed to be his
final pre-trial hearing on eight counts of
Violation of a Civil Protection Order, felonies of the fifth degree. Instead, Fishbein
pled guilty to six counts of the lesser charges, which are first-degree misdemeanors.
Counts seven and eight were dismissed as
a part of the plea deal. Each count carries a
maximum sentence of 180 days in jail with
a $1,000 fine. However, Ohio law restricts
sentences on misdemeanors to 18 months
total. Judge Charles Steele ordered a presentence investigation and set the sentencing for 3:30 p.m. Oct. 22.
The original felony charges against
Fishbein stemmed from actions that took

place from Nov. 2, 2013, to March 13 of

this year. Fishbein had been accused of
violating a protective order by contacting
a former female employee.
He has been held in prison on a threeyear sentence for intimidation of a witness and telephone harassment of the
same former employee in 2012. Fishbein
was charged with 21 felonies and two
misdemeanor counts of telecommunications harassment, stemming from making
between 300-400 telephone calls to the
then-22-year-old woman, with some of
those calls being threatening in nature.
At one point, Fishbein was released on
bond with the stipulation he was not
allowed to use the telephone unless
another person placed the call and monitored the conversation. Minutes after
those conditions were explained to him,
Fishbein was observed by court officials
in the lobby outside the courtroom talking on a cell phone. His bond was then
revoked and he was held in jail until his
sentencing.
Fishbein is scheduled to be released
on the previous sentence on Oct. 27.

Robert Fishbein sits with his attorney, Ryan Warnecke, in the Van Wert County
Common Pleas Court on Thursday. Fishbein, the former CEO of I & K Distributors
of Delphos, changed his plea to guilty on six counts of attempting to violate
a protection order. He will be sentenced on Oct. 22. (DHI Media/Kirk Dougal)

The
Delphos Herald is teaming
up with the Delphos Public
Library to point out the
importance of battling illiteracy in the local community
by taking part in the Read
One Program. The project
began in 2011 in Van Wert
County and now eight newspapers and library systems in
Ohio and Indiana are taking
part in the program this year.
Approximately one in five
U.S. adults (21 percent) cannot read above the fourthgrade level and are considered functionally illiterate.
Illiteracy also translates to a
higher likelihood of needing
food stamps or earning below
the poverty level. A person
who is functionally illiterate
is also more likely to end up
in jail or be on welfare. (See
last weeks editorial for more
on the importance of literacy.)
We started the Read
One Program to point out
the value of literacy, said
Nancy Spencer, Herald editor. Too many of our young
people and adults struggle
economically and sociologically because of the inability
to read at a functional level
and this is something we can
all work to change.
It is easy for Delphos area
residents to take part in the
Read One Program. Simply
choose at least one book to
read during the month of
October. At the end of the
month, email the title of the
book(s) and the author to
nspencer@delphosherald.com or drop it by the
Delphos Herald office. In
the first week of November,
all of the titles will be compiled and a list will be published in an edition of the
newspaper and online. (The
name of the reader will not
be published.)
The Herald saw nearly 100
titles turned in last year.

The Heralds sister paper,

The Times Bulletin, saw a
marked jump between the
first and second years the
paper backed the program.
Times Bulletin Publisher Kirk
Dougal said there were a total
of 49 different titles read during the first years program
but that number jumped to
114 in the second year.
Even more encouraging
were the number of YA and
childrens books involved as
parents took the time to make
sure their children participated by being read to or reading
themselves, Dougal added.
To start off October and
the Read One Program on the
right foot, here is a list of the
most checked out books from
the Delphos Public Library
in September, separated into
several categories:

State asks US Supreme Court to delay voting order

COLUMBUS (AP) Attorneys for
Ohio asked the U.S. Supreme Court
on Thursday to delay a federal judges
order that expands the swing states
early voting schedule this fall.
The request comes a day after a
three-judge panel of a federal appeals
court upheld the order that allows early
ballots to be cast next week.
In a Sept. 4 decision, U.S. District
Judge Peter Economus temporarily blocked an Ohio law trimming
early voting and ordered Republican
Secretary of State Jon Husted to set
additional times that included evening
hours. The ruling moved the start of
early voting to Tuesday instead of Oct.
7.

or in person.
The state is appealing the panels
decision and has asked the full 6th U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati
to grant a rehearing.
State Solicitor Eric Murphy told the
Supreme Court in Thursdays court filing that the judges order was wrong
and inequitable in making the changes
so late.
Ohio respectfully asks that the federal courts permit it to implement the
early-voting schedule its democratically elected representatives chose and for
which its voters and elections officials
have prepared for over six months,
Murphy wrote.
The appeals panel concluded in a
3-0 decision on Wednesday that none

of the interests put forward by Ohio

sufficiently justified the burden found
to be placed on certain voters by two
election-related measures.
One is a directive from Husted that
established uniform early voting times
and restricted weekend and evening
hours. Another is a GOP-backed state
law that eliminates so-called golden
week, when people could both register
to vote and cast ballots. Without those
days, early voting would typically start
28 or 29 days before Election Day
instead of the prior 35-day window.
The American Civil Liberties Union
of Ohio filed the lawsuit on behalf of
several black churches and the states
chapters of the NAACP and the League
of Women Voters.

Health department plans influenza vaccine clinics

INFORMATION SUBMITTED
BY THE VAN WERT COUNTY
HEALTH DEPARTMENT
VAN WERT The flu (influenza)
is an infection of the nose, throat, and
lungs caused by influenza viruses. There
are many different influenza viruses that
are constantly changing, and flu illness
can vary from mild to severe. Flu viruses
spread mainly by droplets made when
people who are infected with the influenza
virus cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets
can land in the mouths or noses of people
who are nearby. A person can also get the
flu by touching a surface or object that
has the flu virus on it and then touching
their own mouth, eyes or nose. The symptoms of flu can include fever, cough, sore
throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches,
headache, chills, fatigue and sometimes
vomiting and diarrhea. Some people may
develop serious consequences from the flu
including pneumonia and death.
To protect yourself from getting
influenza, the first and most important

thing you can do is to get an annual flu

vaccine. Vaccination is recommended
for everyone six months of age and
older. In addition to getting vaccinated,
it is important for everyone to take the
following steps that can help prevent the
spread of germs:
Cover coughs and sneezes with a
tissue. Throw the tissue in the trash after
you use it.
Stay away from people who are
sick.
Wash your hands often with soap
and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose
and mouth. Germs spread this way.
If someone in the household is
sick, try to keep the sick person in a separate room from others in the household.
Keep surfaces and toys in the
home clean by wiping them down with
household disinfectant.
The Van Wert County Health
Department will hold walk-in flu clinics for those ages 6 months and older

every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m.-12:30

p.m. starting Oct. 1 and ending Dec.
17. Clinics are scheduled by appointment
only on Oct. 1 and 29 from 3 p.m.-6 p.m.
During each clinic, the quadrivalent vaccine, which protects against four strains of
influenza, will be offered in the both the
injectable and nasal mist forms. High dose
vaccine will also be offered for individuals
over 65 years of age. The CDC and ACIP
are recommending that children ages 2
through 8 years who are healthy receive
the nasal mist, as they have found the protection from this vaccine to be 54 percent
more effective in this age group compared
to the injectable form.
The health department accepts most
forms of private insurance as well as
Medicaid and Medicare. It is located at
1179 Westwood Drive, Suite 300 in Van
Wert and the phone number is 419-2380808.
Visit the website at www.vanwertcountyhealth.org, the ODH website at

God and U2: How long must we sing this song?

In the first song on U2s new album

-- Songs of Innocence -- the singer once
known as Bono Vox sings the praises of
the punk prophet who led his teenaged self
out of confusion into stage-stomping confidence.
The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone) proclaims: I was young, not dumb. Just wishing to be blinded, by you, brand new, and
we were pilgrims on our way. I woke up
at the moment when the miracle occurred.
Heard a song that made some sense out of
the world. Everything I ever lost, now has
been returned. The most beautiful sound Id
ever heard.
Actually, this could be a metaphor, noted Greg Clarke, leader of Bible Society
Australia. What if Bono is actually describing another earthquake that rocked his life
in those years -- his Christian conversion?
What if God is the you in this song?
We are not told what the miracle is,
but there are plenty to choose from: the
incarnation, the Gospel proclamation to an
angry young man, or his encounter with a
God whose story makes some sense of the
world, argued Clarke in an online commentary. Whatever it is, this miracle is the shaping concept for the album that unfolds. ...
The line, Everything I ever lost, now
has been returned has definite echoes of

TERRY MATTINGLY

On
Religion
not just Amazing Graces I once was
lost, but more importantly, Luke 18:29. In
this Gospel passage, Jesus talks about the
way in which God will keep and restore the
relationships of all who have prioritized the
kingdom of God. The things and the people
you have lost will be returned to you. It is
a most moving idea, especially for pilgrim
souls who take risks for their beliefs in the
way Bono has always done.
Well, thats one way to hear the song.
I dont know about that one. To me,
Miracle sounds like a song about Joey
Ramone, said the Rev. Beth Maynard,
laughing. She is an Episcopal priest in
Champaign, Illinois, and nationally known
as co-editor of the book Get Up Off Your
Knees: Preaching the U2 Catalog and as a
key writer at the U2 Sermons blog.
After decades of experts dissecting U2s

music, it should be clear that Christian faith

is part of their native language. Its how
they view the world. ... But sometimes
the songs just say what they say. These
guys are more Flannery OConnor than the
Newsboys, she said, contrasting a famous
Catholic storyteller with a pop group in
Contemporary Christian music.
Critics agree that this album is
packed with literal references to events
and locations that shaped the band members during their years at Mount Temple
Comprehensive School in Dublin, Ireland.
The first person thanked in the credits is the
schools chaplain -- Jack Heaslip, our north
star.
But there are layers in the content. One
song, Cedarwood Road, describes life on
Bonos home street: If the door is open it
isnt theft. You cant return to where youve
never left. Blossoms falling from a tree, they
cover you and cover me. Symbols clashing,
Bibles smashing, paint the world you need
to see.
When the album was released -- given
free to 500 million iTunes subscribers -commentators noted that there was a blossoming cherry tree at the house where a
Plymouth Brethren family held Bible studies attended by Bono, Larry Mullen Jr. and
Dave The Edge Evans. Bono wrote in the

albums notes: In their company I saw some

great preachers who opened up these scary
black Bibles and made the word of God
dance for them, and us. ... One minute youre
reading it, next minute youre in it.
By now, its obvious that many people
-- the bands fierce critics, as well as loyal
fans -- will find faith content in everything
U2 releases. However, many evangelical
Christians will never embrace a quartet
of smoking, drinking and often bawdy
Irishmen.
Whats next? With a nod to poet William
Blake, Songs of Innocence could be followed by Songs of Experience -- creating
an autobiographical U2 song cycle.
The bottom line: Listeners will keep
debating what it all means.
At this point in their careers, theyve
pretty much earned the right to do whatever
they want to do, said Maynard. Ill be perfectly happy to go along for the ride, along
with millions of other people.

BY MARGIE ROSTORFER
Change. Sometimes it can be good; or
not so good. It can be in the air warning us
of impending weather. It can mean a change
from lush green to brilliant fall colors. Some
embrace change; others, not so much. Change
is identified as: to cause to be different; to
give a completely different form or appearance to; transform; to lay aside as to leave
for another; to become different or undergo
alteration.
Change is in the air at the Thrift Shop.
Were going to look a little different. Were
hoping youll agree that its all good. In the
past several articles, Ive mentioned that new,
big changes were coming. Weve decided to
move, shift around and combine several of
the departments. Youll no longer have to go
out into the annex building to find even more
merchandise that was on display and for sale
out there. Weve now shifted what we used to
house in the back area (which you probably
didnt even know was back there) over to the
annex and have converted this back area to
more shopping space. We feel the shopping
flow and the convenience to the customers
will be well worth the effort it has taken to
move and shift these departments around.
The outside doors as well as the inside
doors you used to use to give you access to
the annex will now be closed to customer
shopping. The annex area will now house our
seasonal items and create another sorting area
for donated items. Be sure to stop in and see
the new layout change your shopping can
now all be done in the main shopping complex. As always, if you cant find something,
or if the department youre looking for has
been moved and you dont know where it
went, be sure to ask for help.
We would like to extend our thanks to

CONVOY If you looked at the shots on-goal during

the Jefferson at Crestview girls soccer match under the lights
Thursday at the Crestview Athletic Complex, youd have
thought it was a tight match.
After all, the Lady Wildcats outshot the Lady Knights ongoal 13-6.
However, the visitors were very much
on target in a 7-0 Northwest Conference
shutout.
There was a reason we didnt have a lot
of shots on-goal; we wanted to get back to
the basics of ball possession, communicating, making smart runs and such. We didnt
want to just take a shot for its own sake but take quality ones,
Jefferson coach Josiah Stober said. The girls did a nice job
of making those runs, putting quality crosses into the box and
finding teammates. Once we had control, we had the opportunity to get other girls more playing time and give them different roles to learn. That will help us down the road, keeping
people fresh and able to do different things.
Crestview coach Joy Short felt the score didnt indicate how
well her etam actually competed.
Thats been the theme of our season; the score doesnt
show how well we played. If you watch the game, youd think
the score was much closer; to me, this wasnt a 7-0 game,
Short added. For us, its been transition that has cost us.
Teams have been able to take advantage of us there, pushing
the ball downfield. Plus, we do get tired with only four subs
(four others are hurt).
Delphos (7-3-2, 3-0-0 NWC) with more depth and experience scored just 59 ticks into the match. With sophomore
Arianna Knebel dribbling down into the right corner, she
crossed to freshman Kendall Marquiss, who banged the orb
home from eight yards past Lady Knight sophomore keeper
Abby Clouser (6 saves) for a 1-0 edge.
The Wildcats only had six shots on-goal the first half and
made five of them.

DEFIANCE Thursdays
gorgeous weather sunny,
warm and very little breeze
made for a potentially
good day on the Eagle Rock
Golf Course for the Division
III Sectional boys outing.
The hilly and narrow fairways and greens made for
other plans.
However, when the final
putt was sunk, Kalidas boys
team continued its strong
fall season by capturing the
13-team meet for the right to
head to another great course,
Stone Ridge in Bowling
Green, next week for District
play.
A pair of Wildcats led
all golfers on the day: Zach
Erhart with a 74 and Jeff
Knueve a 76.
We were at Auglaize
last year and shot a 314. In
comparison, this course is a
little bit tougher, winning
Kalida coach Ken Schnipke
explained. The fairways are
narrower; you just cant take
your driver and rip it off the
tee. You have to make good
choices with your clubs on
this course. We were hoping to shoot under 320 but
considering how tough the
course is in comparison to
last year, 320 isnt bad.
Also contributing for the
Maroon and White were
Evan Reckers 83, Trent
Siebenecks 87 and the 89 of
Collin Nartker.
I wasnt surprised that
Zach shot a 74 and Jeff a 76.
It was the 87 of Trent and the
89 of Collin that surprised
me; I really felt they could
go lower than 85, Schnipke
added. All five of my guys
who were back from last
year are capable of shooting in the 70s. Thats the
good part of having all five
guys that can score well; if
one or two are off, others
pick up the slack.
Today was all about
advancing; this week and
next are about advancing.
Hopefully, well have all five

Parkway/St. Johns match,
won by the Lady Panthers
29-27, 13-25, 25-17, 25-17.
Parkway is 8-8 overall and
2-4 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.
The Lady Jays are 7-9 and 0-6.
The first set was a tossup from start
to finish. There were 13 ties and six lead
changes. The biggest leads were 4-pointers at 9-5, Delphos, and 22-18, Parkway.
At 22-18, though, the visitors reeled off
five points in a row Panther service
error, Panther net violation, and three stuff
blocks by Blue Jay sophomore Jessica
Geise 23-22, Delphos. However, a
Blue Jay slam sailed wide to tie it at 23-23.

Four straight times, then, Parkway took

one point leads, only to have St. Johns
come back to tie it. At 27-27, Panther
sophomore Clista Hellwarth blasted a
kill, and freshman Haley Hawks stuff
block ended it.
The Lady Jays werent dismayed
by the close first-set loss, coming back
to dominate the second set. Parkways
only lead was at 2-1. The lead gradually got bigger and bigger, with the
final 12-point margin being the largest.
The momentum took a 180-degree
turn at the start of the third set and never
went back the Jays way. Parkway led
wire to wire in the third, and after the
early going the lead fluctuated between
five and nine points. The fourth set was
a bit closer. After ties at 1-1, 4-4, and
5-5, though, Parkway led throughout. St.
Johns got as close as 11-10 on a spike
by junior spark plug Maddie Pohlman,
but Parkways sophomore lefty Sarah
Gehron led a 5-0 run, and the visitors
never got closer than four after that.

advancing team.
His 83 overall and back-9
of 38 were both career lows.
I am a freshman; I just
played with nothing to lose,
Klausing explained. The key
for me was a change that
my coach (John Klausing)
made in my grip on my driver Tuesday; my hands were
more interlocked and it felt
better. My hands were working together instead of being
apart. Plus, I hit a bunch of
greens in regulation; that was
the key.
The team finished with a
375, good for sixth. Brandon
Slate carded a 92 and Austin
Lucas a 96.
It can be tough to be the
coach and the dad. Sometimes
you have to have someone
else tell him the same thing,
head coach John Klausing
asserted. For example,
we changed the grip on his
drive but it helped to have
(Country Acres golf pro)
Greg (Klausing) tell him the
same thing. Coach Schnipke
asked him to come with them
Sunday for a practice round.
Overall, we improved a
lot over the course of the
season. This is a course that
tests your mental strength;
you really have to manage
it well. That is a learning
experience that will serve us
in the future because we are
so young.
Jefferson compiled a 371
score, good for fifth, with
seniors Ryan Bullinger and
Nick Fitch knocking down a
91 and 93, respectively.
Our seniors will be
missed, that is for sure,
Wildcat head coach Chad
Brinkman said. All the others we have back, this was
a good course for them. If
you made a mistake today,
it cost you. We have to play
a lot of golf in the off-season and build up trust in our
swings. If you dont have that
trust, then you hit a bad shot,
you cant really get it back;
that was our undoing today.
This course is very tight and
unforgiving, with trees everywhere.
See GOLF, page 7

Thats high school volleyball, said

Parkway coach Jeff Marbaugh of his teams
ups and downs. Its just keeping focus. We
had the first game in hand, but you gotta
finish the game out. Luckily we made a
couple of plays when we needed to. The
second game, we got down. I just challenged them in the third game. Weve gotta
find the court, we gotta get our blocks over
the net, we gotta serve more aggressively,
things weve been doing but we quit doing
them the second game. We did those things
the third and fourth games. No miracle
answer, its just about making plays.
Blue Jay coach Carolyn Dammeyer concurred with Marbaugh. Momentum; ball
control, basically, said Dammeyer. They
more or less took us out of our offense in
games three and four. We were too much on
the defense all the time. We werent blocking
as well. We werent serving tough. We were
right there the first game. The second game,
everything was good. Parkway just played a
lot tougher the third and fourth games.

Jefferson drops 5-set thriller to Paulding

By LARRY HEIING
DHI Media Correspondent
news@delphosherald.com

DELPHOS It was a battle of two evenly-matched Northwest

Conference volleyball teams as Paulding traveled to Delphos
Jefferson Thursday.
Each team has only three wins on the year and was looking for a
spark to finish strong. In fact both teams were so similar that it took
five sets before Paulding pulled out the victory 23-25, 25-19, 25-17,
20-25, 15-9.
The fifth and deciding set began with Jefferson taking the early
lead on a set by freshman Macy Wallace to Danielle Harman for the
kill. After Paulding tied the score, Harman landed her second kill of
the set with an assist from another freshman Sarah Miller. Paulding
took the lead for the first time with a slam by Sam Meggison and an
ace by Audrey Manz. Both teams traded service errors but Jefferson
managed to knot the score at eight on a kill tap by Brooke Culp.
The locals took the sixth lead change of the set at 9-8 with a kill by
Wallace with the assist by Devyn Carder. That was the last points
scored by Delphos for the evening as Paulding finished on a 6-0 rally
to finish the match.
An inspired Jefferson team took the court in the first set and
battled back from a 4-1 deficit. Claire Thompson launched a kill and
Miller served up an ace as Jefferson tied the score. Jefferson played
well on both sides of the net, highlighted with a dive out of bounds
by Thompson to preserve the volley as Jefferson went on to get the
point for a 13-8 lead. Kills by Harman, Wallace and a pair by Andrea
Geise set up set point for the Lady Cats. An assist by Culp to Miller
for the soft return gave the Jefferson netters the set-1 victory.
After our game with Lincolnview earlier in the week, we
worked on confidence and coming out strong, said Jefferson coach
Joy DeVelvis. I thought we did that in the first set and played very
sound volleyball.
The momentum carried over into the second set for Delphos as
an ace by Miller fell in for a 7-3 lead. Paulding came roaring back,
outscoring Jefferson 18-3 to take control of the set. A pair of kills by
Wallace and another by Miller brought the Paulding lead back to
single digits. Delphos fought back with a block an a kill by Geise
along with an ace by Carder but it wasnt enough as Paulding won
set point on a kill by Meggison.
Jefferson continued to play great defense on the floor as Culps
dig lead to a kill by Wallace to grab the lead in the third set. Jenna
Gilden landed an ace in the left corner as both teams battled to
an11-all tie. Delphos took a 2-point lead with an assist by Wallace to
Harman for the kill and serving ace by Wallace. Paulding again went

School. (DHI Media/Kenny Poling)
on another rally, outscoring the home team 14-4 to win the third set.
The fourth set was the usual tight competition as the score
was tied at 6. Paulding began to go on another scoring streak as
Meggisons slam put her team ahead 16-9. Not to be outdone on their
home court, Jefferson outscored Paulding 9-2 to deadlock the score
at 18. The Jefferson freshmen backcourt of Carder, Wallace and
Miller, along with the rest of the Delphos team, allowed Paulding
only two more points as Jefferson forced the final fifth set.
I couldnt be happier with our effort tonight except for
coming up short in the victory column, commented DeVelvis.
We made some lineup changes and started three freshmen
for the first time. We made a few freshman mistakes but our
upperclassmen showed great leadership and we almost came
out with the win.
Carder had a near perfect night behind the line on 26/27
serving (4 aces) and Miller was 16/18 (3 aces). In the hitting,
Wallace (8 kills), Harman (6 kills) and Geise (6 kills) were tops.
Culp had six assists.
Jefferson hosts Bath Monday.

A walk through time into golfs noisiest arena

By DOUG FERGUSON
Associated Press

GLENEAGLES, Scotland As if players dont already face enough pressure in the

Ryder Cup, the walk into golfs most boisterous arena goes through a tunnel of time.
One side of the short tunnel is painted
American red and celebrates past victories,
with images of Jack Nicklaus and Arnold
Palmer, Paul Azinger and Ben Hogan. The
other side is European blue with a roll call of
winners that feature Tony Jacklin and Nick
Faldo, Colin Montgomerie and Bernhard
Langer.
Emerging from the tunnel, players immediately see blue bunting on a three-story
hospitality suite with the words, Where
Legends are Forged.
Take a breath.

Last week: Tony Schumacher raced

to two Top Fuel victories in two days
at Texas Motorplex, taking the raindelayed Carolina Nationals and the
Texas FallNationals. In Funny Car, Matt
Hagan won the North Carolina event
and Courtney Force took the Texas title.
Jonathan Gray and Dave Connolly won
in Pro Stock, and Eddie Krawiec and

Jefferson

They make their way to the first tee,

where a U-shaped grandstand has 1,892
seats filled with fans who are chanting, singing and stomping.
This is no ordinary golf tournament.
Its like walking into a football
stadium, said Stephen Gallacher,
who grew up near Gleneagles and
has never seen the course looking
like this. Not with fans 10-deep on
both sides of the fairway, draped
in flags of the European Union, the nine
European countries represented, and yes,
even the Stars & Stripes.
That tunnel has got some iconic images
through it, and youll hear the crowd, youll
hear the noise, Justin Rose said. You
really begin to sense that even on the practice
range. The atmosphere really amps up.

Andrew Hines in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Fast facts: The event is the third
in the 6-race NHRA Countdown to the
Championship. The top 10 in each class
qualified for the playoffs. Schumacher
leads in Top Fuel, 65-year-old John Force
in Funny Car, Jason Line in Pro Stock
and Hines in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Next event: NHRA Nationals, Oct.
2-5, Maple Grove Raceway, Mohnton,
Pennsylvania.

(Continued from page 6)

The next goal came at 31:02. Set up by a lead pass by junior

Tasha Schaeffer to senior Jordyn Radler down the right side, the
latter did the rest. She made one move to get by a defender and
fired a 10-yarder from the wing inside the right post for 2-0.
At 30:44, it became 3-0. Marquiss led senior Kylee Haehn
on a perfect pass down the middle and Haehn did the rest,
splitting the defense and beating the keeper from 10 yards to
the right side.
Crestview (0-11-0, 0-4-0 NWC) had its only shot the first
half at 25:06 when junior Alexandra Boroff launched from 25
yards but Jefferson junior Jessica Pimpas (4 saves) was good
for the stop.
At 15:55 of the first half, the Red and White made it 4-nil.
Haehn dribble for a great run down the left side, beating the
defense and getting a 1-on-1 with the keeper; her 10-yarder
from the wing found the net.
Jefferson tacked on the fifth goal of the half at 3:23. Near
the touch line on the right side, Knebel passed to the post
to junior Logan Hamilton, whose 15-yarder looped over the
keeper and into the twine.
Crestview had its second shot at 35:05 of the second half but
freshman Jalyn Browns 25-yarder was denied.
Jefferson made it 6-0 with 32:46 left. Marquiss started it on a
lead pass to Haehn on the left side, then the senior crossed it back
to the right and the keeper had no chance to stop Knebels 8-yarder.
The Knights had two chances at 28:08 and 27:00 but
senior Lauren Schmids free kick from the left side skimmed
the crossbar and her 25-yarder in front just floated over the bar.
From then on, neither team could score as the Wildcats put
players in different spots and had more to choose from, while
the Knights with only 15 healthy bodies out of 19 to begin
the match lost another one as freshman Alyssa Gent was
helped off the pitch at 1:41 with an injury.
The Knights host Van Wert at 1 p.m. Saturday. Jefferson
hosts Cory-Rawson 5 p.m. Monday.

I can only imagine that by the time you

walk to the tee, youre fully ready to go.
Theres absolutely no doubt.
And there was one more touch to add
inspiration to the home team.
From the first tee, players
cant help but notice a message
written across the back of the
50-foot grandstand behind the
18th green to the left. Its a quote
from Seve Ballesteros, forever
the face of European golf in the
Ryder Cup.
As a player and captain, there are
unforgettable moments when you are competing for the people of your continent.
Four long days of speculation and
anticipation give way to the most frenetic
three days in golf, starting with a tee shot
unlike any other.

Should I ask his family how

long this previous marriage lasted,
or should I let it go and be grateful
for the good and loving husband
he was during our 27 years
together? He was a widower with
no kids and I was a widow when
we met. What do you think? -NUMBER THREE IN ARIZONA
DEAR NUMBER THREE:
Your husband may have been
divorced from wife No. 1, or
the marriage could have been
annulled and he didnt think it
counted. While I agree that
you should be grateful for the 27
happy years you spent together, I
cant ignore the fact that such an
important piece of information
was withheld from you. If you
have questions and think the
family can answer them, you are
entitled to know.
DEAR ABBY: My sister is
difficult, and our relationship has
been extremely rocky over the
years. She insists upon doling
out unsolicited advice and asking
pointed personal questions about
my finances, health, sex life, etc.
I have told her more than once
that these things are none of her
business unless I choose to discuss
them. Her response is shes only
trying to help.
Our mother died six months
ago and my sister is again making
overtures. Im hesitant about
speaking with her again because
shes so volatile. Ill do it only if
she respects my boundaries.
I am searching for the right
words to tell her a relationship
will work only if both parties
respect each other, and that trust
has to be earned. Id appreciate
any suggestions. -- GUARDED

under your terms, my advice is to
write her a letter and tell her you
will be willing to try only under
the circumstances you described
to me. To do so would not be rude,
and it will be interesting to see if
she is able to comply.
DEAR ABBY: Im being
married next year and want to
make sure I send written thankyou notes to everyone. I have
been a diligent thank-you note
writer for years.
Can you tell me whats the best
way to get everyones address? I
have had problems with this in the
past. I hate having to call and ask
because the people always want to
know why I want the information.
Would it be OK to have as part of
the wedding website a place where
guests who attend can confirm
their mailing address? -- BRIDETO-BE IN CALIFORNIA
DEAR BRIDE-TO-BE: How
do you plan to invite your guests
to the wedding? Most brides send
their invitations via U.S. mail,
which requires the persons name,
address and ZIP code on the
envelope.
However, if you plan to issue
your invitations online, then I
see no reason you cant ask your
guests to confirm their information
on your wedding site. It wouldnt
be a breach of etiquette.

Hows
the
decorating business?
I asked Beverly on
her last visit.
Oh,
didnt
I
tell you? she said,
pawing around in
her purse. There
was just too much
running around, and
the customers were
driving me crazy.
I cant deal with
people who cant
make decisions. I
got so sick of people
changing their minds.
On Tuesday theyd
want granite counters;
on Friday, theyd
want soapstone. Ive
moved on.
She found what she
was looking for and
handed me a business
card. It read:
B E V E R LY
FERGUSON - Social
Media Consultant.
Beverly
doesnt
know any more about
social media than I do.
But she has a business
card. It reminds me
of that scene in The
Wizard of Oz when
the Wizard tells the
Tin Man that he
doesnt need a brain,
he needs a diploma.
Beverly doesnt need
to know anything
about Twitter or
cellphone plans; she
just needs a business
card that says she
does. It means that
she can now charge
for the advice I can
only give for free.
My advice is to look
around for the best
deal you can get, and
take it. At least, that
was her advice to
me, so Im passing it
along to you.
I added her latest
card to a stack of her
other business cards,
which I have been
collecting for years.
Beverlys never had
the same job twice,
but shes always
working. I have
business cards touting
her as a Mentor for
Professional Women.
One says shes a

also worked for a

Her business cards
were things of great

and precision that
went into them was
breathtaking. The ink
on the card reading

on a thick card stock
that made one think
the business had been

That venture, too,
tanked.
Some of the cards

her business cards
were quite impressive.

Gable causes
undershirt
industry to

was responsible for a

decline in undershirt
sales. What did he do?
-- G.L., Wildwood,
N.J.
A: Gable didnt wear
one in Frank Capras
1934 comedy It
Happened One Night.
In the film, Gable took
off his shirt in front
of Claudette Colbert.
Capra believed the
scene was too long,
so
he
instructed
Gable to not wear an
undershirt. The scene
was considered racy at
the time. Sources claim
sales of undershirts
took an immediate
dive due to consumers
reasoning that if Clark
Gable didnt need an
undershirt, neither did
they. Other sources
claim the trend was
already
occurring
and neither Gable nor
the movie caused the
declining sales.
Q: Did filmmakers
really burn a city for
the sequence in Gone
with the Wind? -O.F.J., Medford, Calif.
A: The scene was
supposed to depict
the burning of battletorn Atlanta. What
you really see going
up in flames were
old movie sets that
needed to be cleared
from the studio lot in
Culver City, Calif. The
burning of the Atlanta
Depot was filmed on
Dec. 10, 1938, and it
was the first scene of
the movie to be shot.
Q: Celebrities have
placed impressions of
their hands and feet
in cement in front of
Graumans
Chinese
Theatre for many
years. What kind of
theater is it? When did
this tradition start? -P.H., Gainesville, Fla.
A: Sid Grauman
came up with the
idea of a luxurious
movie theater in 1922.
He built Graumans
Egyptian Theatre the
same year King Tuts
tomb was discovered.
Five years later, he
built the Chinese
Theatre and began
putting the footprints
of Hollywood stars
in cement. The first
signers were Mary
Pickford,
Douglas
Fairbanks and Norma
Talmadge. Hundreds
of stars -- from Doris
Day to Britney Spears
-- have left their prints
at the theater.
Footprints
and
handprints are not the
only impressions left
by the famous. A few
of the unique imprints
left by stars include
Groucho Marxs cigar,
Betty Grables legs,
John Waynes fist,
Al Jolsons knees,
Jimmy Durantes nose,
Whoopi
Goldbergs
hair braids and even
the hoofs of Gene
Autrys horse.
Sid Grauman came
up with the idea of the
gala movie premier,
with many of those first
presentations
being
held at his Hollywood
Boulevard theater. In
1973, Graumans was
sold to Ted Mann, who
renamed the theater. In
1986, Mann sold the
theater to Paramount
Pictures, which in
turn sold half interest
to Warner Bros. The
theater
continued
to be called Manns
Chinese Theater until
2001, when the name
reverted to Graumans.
This January, the name
was changed to TCL
Chinese Theater to
reflect new ownership.

Holder resigning: Attorney general backed rights

WASHINGTON (AP) Eric Holder,
Americas first black attorney general and
an unflinching champion of civil rights in
enforcing the nations laws, announced his
resignation Thursday after leading the Justice
Department since the first days of President
Barack Obamas term. He is the fourth-longest-serving attorney general in U.S. history.
Holder, the administrations point man
on the civil rights investigation into the
police shooting of an unarmed 18-year-old
in Ferguson, Missouri, wont leave until a
replacement is confirmed, which means he
could remain in office for months.
Senate Republicans signaled they were
preparing for a confirmation fight after years
of battles with Holder. Said Senate GOP
leader Mitch McConnell: I will be scrutinizing the presidents replacement nominee to
ensure the Justice Department finally returns
to prioritizing law enforcement over partisan
concerns.

Holder aggressively enforced the Voting

DES MOINES, Iowa

(AP) Farmers can start as
early as next week on signing
up for new safety net programs that U.S. Agriculture
Secretary Tom Vilsack said
replaces the much-criticized
direct payments with government payouts based on the
risks farmers face.
Vilsack traveled to St.
Paul, Minnesota, to hold a
news conference to announce
the rollout of the programs on
Thursday. He held a conference call with reporters to
further discuss the programs
and answer questions. The
programs were established
in the 2014 farm bill and
will allow farmers to protect
themselves against commodity price drops and from lower
revenue in poor crop years.
Payouts this year could be
significant since anticipated
record corn and soybean harvests have sent prices plummeting. At current prices
many farmers are likely to
lose money, a scenario that
will enable them to collect
government payments.
The new programs cover
this years harvested crop.
Farmers will receive payment
in October 2015. The programs are in addition to crop
insurance farmers may buy to
cover losses from flooding,
drought, hail and other natural disasters.
Vilsack said without the
programs, the risk of farming
could be so great that many
farmers would quit.
We want to encourage
people to stay in the business
of farming, Vilsack said. I
think, frankly, this system is
much more risk-based and
much more of a partnership
between the government and
producers than the direct payment program was, where

Archives

basically the government was

paying regardless of whether
prices were good or not.
Vilsack said farmers can
sign up as soon as Monday but
he expects they will take several months to research their
options, talk with advisers and
use online calculators to determine their best choices. He
said no firm deadline has been
set but farmers will likely be
given until early next year to
make enrollment decisions.
Farm owners must first
make some decisions about
establishing the number of
acres and yield history theyll
submit to the USDA to be
used to compute coverage
through 2018. Next, producers of major row crops
mostly corn, soybeans, wheat
and rice must decide
between a price loss coverage program that pays when
commodity prices drop below
specified levels and an agriculture risk coverage program
that pays when their revenue
falls below certain levels.
The farm bill, signed into
law in February, provided $6
million for setting up local
meetings, designing online
tools and creating educational materials to help farmers
choose which safety net program would be best.
Wayne Humphries, who
grows corn and soybeans and
raises hogs on about 1,000
acres in southeast Iowa, said
the new programs are complex and will take some work
to understand.
I think the farm programs
are going to be adequate,
he said. We have for years
tried to move toward a more
market-oriented program and
it has arrived, so well understand and embrace whatever
suits our particular farms and
well go from there.
