Purpose of this Publication

This publication is a supplement to Venriv: NorthLthia, and provides more detailed information
on the leading noble clans and fiefs of the Kingdom of
Emlren.
Future publications will provide more details on the
Kingdom of Emlren, but Venriv: Northwestern
Lthia provides an overview of the region.

Dates
Unless otherwise indicated, all year numbers are
given in the Tzyn Reckoning (tr) or Before Tzyn
Reckoning (bt). This system was originally devised by
the Mlderni astronomer Tzyn during the second
century TR, and is now the most widespread dating
system across the region. The current date is the 1st
of Nzyael tr720.
Pronunciation and Accents

The acute accent (e.g. ) indicates primary stress on
the syllable. A grave accent (e.g. ) indicates secondary
stress.
A circumflex accent (e.g. ) indicates the vowel
should be pronounced as if it were followed by an r. This
accent may replace the accent indicating primary or
secondary stress. If such an accented vowel is explicitly
followed by an r, it should be read either as a doubler
and rolled slightly, or indicates a compound word,
where the previous ending r has been lost. Sometimes
it should be rolled even if there is no following r.
An sounds like the vowel in the English word law;
is pronounced like the vowel in the English word
boat, but more rounded.
A y, when used as a vowel, sounds like the vowel in
the English word beet.
The dh digraph represents the voiced dental fricative
edh, the consonant at the beginning of the English
word them. The th digraph is the unvoiced dental
fricative thorn, and is pronounced as at the start of the
English word thin.

Mlkula (Baronial) Clans
Clans of Emlren
Emlan nobility are relatively stratified, into high

noble clans (kla), middle noble clans (mlkula)
and minor clans (tkula). The kula include the royal
clan and the eight clans holding duchies and earldoms.
The mlkula include all clans holding baronies, while
all other land-holding noble clans are tkula.
kla (Great Noble) Clans

The great clans (kla) of Emlren in tr720 are:
Edhlen, the Royal Clan, also holding the duchy
of Jerinl and the earldom of Edr
Tarnas, holding the duchy of Chrons and the
earldom of lam
Thbel, holding the earldom of Nyan
Keir, holding the earldom of Mald
Temel, holding the earldom of Qundas

Each of the noble clans of Emlren is associated
with one or more sibling clans of the free Emla or
mhl.
The following are the mhln-ana of the kula
clans of Emlren:
Emlyn, Edras and Edhlyn are all ana of
clan Edhlen (the royal clan).
Kthlir and llynar are ana of clan Keir (Earls
of Mald).
Quirinllyn are ana of clan Quirnas (Earls of
Negros).
Parllyn are ana of clan Parthn (Earls of
Kbler).
Pallawllys and Kyllrn are ana of clan Panr
(Earls of Mdan).
sallarn and Shennrl are ana of clan Tarnas
(Dukes of Chrons, Earls of lam).
Hyallm are ana of clan Thbel (Earls of Nyan).
Taemryl and Quandryll are ana of clan
Tiemel (Earls of Qundas).
Trhllyn are ana of clan Trahne (Earls of
mane).
There are twenty-two mlkula clans; that is clans

holding baronies (surd). There are more than twentytwo baronies in Emlren, but many are held by the
great noble clans.
The most influential of these baronial clans are the
Hocht, the barons of Lidras. They are the only baronial tenants-in-chief, and sit at the boundary between
the kula and mlkula clans.

Each of these clans also has one or more mhlnana clans amongst the mhl.
Tkula (Minor Noble) Clans

There are several hundred tkula clans in Emlren,
principally holding manorial estates, but also other
roles such as that of constable (lgr) for the greater
clans. Clan Vladar are the chancellors of Edr for the
royal clan, and are the most influential of the tkula
clans.
Tkula clans can be associated with their own mhl
sibling clans or with the sibling clans of their lieges.

Emlren
(Kingdom of Emlren: Clan Edhlen)

Edhlen are the royal clan of Emlren. They also
hold the Duchy of Jerinl and the Earldom of Edr
in addition to the Crown of Emlren. These fiefs are
detailed separately below.
Queen Ylanda has ruled Emlren since tr684,
and is the eleventh ruler of the Edhlen dynasty. See
Venriv: Northwestern Lthia for a full list of the rulers
of Emlren.
Holdings
The Royal Domain of the Kingdom of Emlren
includes seven freetowns, four castles, six keeps, several
other sites, and 273 manors. The total population of
the Royal Domain is 194,300.
The seat of the Royal Domain and capital of the
Kingdom of Emlren is Berma City.
Mald Shire, with the shire seat and moot at

Feldir Keep (12 manors). Krgna Keep (9
manors) by a constable for the crown.
Qundas Shire, with the shire seat and moot at
Dtule Castle (15 manors).
lam Shire, with the shire seat and moot at
Snau Castle (12 manors).
The remainder of the kingdom falls within the
Jerinlia March, which is governed by the Duke of
Jerinl and the Dhria-svan.
Vassals
The Crown of Emlren has eleven tenants-in-chief:
two duchies, eight earldoms, and one baronial tenantin-chief (the Baron of Lidras and Lipyl).
Ensign and Shield of the Kingdom

This shield is born by the Royal Guard and as a
badge by other royal soldiers and officials. It is the
badge of the kingdom as opposed to the royal clan,
and predates clan Edhlens rule by centuries.

each held on behalf of the crown by a sheriff:

manors) is held by a constable for the crown.

Kdigen Keep (17 manors).
Berma Shire, with the shire seat and moot at

(Duchy of Jerinl: Clan Edhlen)

Anvras al Edhlen is the Duke of Jerinl. He is
the Queens nephew, and is the designated heir to the
throne of Emlren. The duchy was created in tr635
for Prelan Edhlen, the brother of King Pethrs V, the
Queens grandfather. It was granted to Anvras in tr698
when Prelans son died without an available heir.

The Duchy of Jerinl includes two castles, ten keeps,
and 156 manors. It has a total population of 68,520.

Chrons
(Duchy of Chrons: Clan Tarnas)

Saelna alr Tarnas is the Duchess of Chrons
and the Earl of lam. Clan Tarnas were elevated to
ducal rank in tr639 following the treason and fall of the
previous earls of Chrons, clan Nelfis, in tr638.

of 67,340.

rren alr Thbel is the Earl of Nyan. The Earls sister

Celkre is married to the Duke of Jerinl, and both rren
and his sister were raised in the royal household after
they were orphaned in tr694. The Thbel of Emlren
are a junior branch of the ancient Mlderni clan of the
same name.
Ldhroth alr Keir is the Earl of Mald, and is one

of the most powerful nobles in the realm, related by
blood to most of the great clans of the kingdom. He is
known (behind his back) as the Mad Earl, and is prone
to wild, unpredicatable, behaviour. He has a poor relationship with his six children, including his heir, Cled.

rdoth alr Temel is the Earl of Qundas, and

despite his advanced age (he is nearly eighty), he is still
vigorous. He has outlived three wives and two of his
three sons. His third son has been missing for decades,
and thus his heir is his twenty-three year old grandson,
Jmis.
Shar alr Quirnas is the Earl of Negros, is an

engergetic man of sixty. He has poor luck in his family
life, with both his wife and son showing signs of madness. Shar has petitioned the Queen to recognise his
illegitimate son, Rtzar al Flgrir, as his heir. Rtzar is a
master in the Pilots Guild and a gifted Shk-Pvr.

Gldar alr Panr is the Earl of Mdan. Clan Panr are

a large and very ancient clan, claiming to have held
their lands since the founding of the kingdom.
As well as the main branch of the clan, there are
several sub-branches, including branches holding the
baronies of Mrod and Frin in their own right.
lbaroth alr Parthn is the Earl of Kbler, and at

twenty-two is the kingdoms most eligible batchelor. He
is close to his ana clan, Parllyn, and has considered
taking the Freedom. Should he do so, his fief and titles
would pass to his younger sister, Srela, who is only
fifteen.

Lister alr Trahne is the Earl of mane. Clan Trahne
are an ancient clan, whom legend states swore fealty
to Dkarion I, The Founder of Emlren. The current
earl is a member of serveral arcane socieities in the
kingdom. His sister is married to Rickr alr Firliyan, the
Plithner Earl of Plganir, while a second cousin is the
Chancellor of Trkin.

Sir Fnsas alr Vladar is the ron (Chancellor) of
the Earldom of Edr for the Crown. Edr is the ancestral holding of clan Edhlen, but has been governed by
a chancellor since the creation of the Duchy of Jerinl
in tr635. The last three chancellors have been from
clan Vladar, and Sir Fnsas hopes to be granted the
earldom in his own right upon the accession of the current Duke of Jerinl.

(Barony of Lidras: Clan Hocht)

Rickr alr Hocht is the Baron of Lidras and
Lipyl. While technically the clan are mlkula, their
connections to both the royal clans of Emlren and
Mldern mean their status is rising fast. Rickr was a
page in the royal court of Mldern, and is married to
King Chunl Trons eldest daughter, Thaklia.

The Baronies of Lidras and Lipyl include a castle
and a keep, and 27 manors. The fief has a total
population of 14,280.

(Head of the Covenant of the Emla)

The Dhria-svan is the spiritual leader of all of
the Emla people, including those living beyond the
borders of Emlren itself. The Dhria-svan is elected
for life, and takes the title as their name from that point
forward.
The Dhria-svan is not only the leader of the
Emlan Cult of the Convenant, but also the leader of
the Free Emla or mhl. The various ana clans that
dwell across Emlren look to the Dhria-svan for
leadership.
The Dhria-svan holds the ancient fortress / abbey
of brelyn high in the Jerinlian Mountains. The
fortress of Kwnys is held by the mhl clan melyn,
under the oversight of the Dhria-svan.
mhl Ranges
Each of these two ancients sites have oversight of a
number of ranges across Emlren. Around 32,700
mhl live in these various ranges, including around
5,300 semi-settled mhl.

their ancestry back generations, and claim links to the founder
of the realm. Each noble clan also has links to the Free
Emla or mhl, the Emla who live a semi-nomadic lifestyle
in the wildlands of the kingdom and beyond.
This publication provides an introduction to these great
clans, detailing the fiefs of the kingdom, outlining the tenantsin-chief, and lists all the holdings of the realm.
