NEWS STORY
I have taught in Pacific Christian College for the past 43 years.
I have taught Greek language and English Bible, more Gld Testament than New,
including nearly everything from Genesis to Revelation.
From 1968 I have taught Bible classes overseas, beginning at the
Christian Service Camp held for the past 15 years near Lugano, Switzerland,
I have also held short-term teaching sessions in Germany, Belgium, France,
Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Thailand. In 1978 I taught
for a semester at Kenmore Christian College in Brisbane, Qld., Australia.
Last February Helen and I received a letter from Bro. Charles Selby
asking us to come and help with the work of Aparri Bible Seminary, especially
during the Selbys' furlough which would include the 1980-81 school year.
Brother Selby's letter was written just five days after I had decided to
terminate my employment at Pacific Christian. We laid the matter before
the Lord and set a date for a final decision. Althou^ we received other
invitations, it seemed best to us to accept the first one.
Aparri, a seaport town on the north shore of Luzon, at the mouth of
the Cagayan River, was one of the places Helen and I visited in the winter of
1978. It impressed us as a field receptive to the gospel, and one in which
it would be a joy to work. I lectuted to one of the O.T. classes, to an
interested audience. I sat with a Greek class as substitute teacher, and
found the students doing very good work. I hope to be able to make a worth
while contribution in preparing these young people for leadership in the
churches of northern Luzon.
We plan to leave for the field about Jan. 1, 1980. We will go first
to India, where we are scheduled to spend some timeteaching a Bible survey
course, at Kulpahar. We expect to arrive in Aparri before the school year
ends in March.

Eileen is my brotherdaughter. She met and married Warrnn
Christianson while they were students in Pacific Christian
College in 1968. They were students of Harrold McEarland.
They first went to Japan in 1971-2 as furlough replacements
for Harold and Leone Cole at Ono. When theyreturned to Japan
they went to Karuizawa for language study. They are contin
uing the work Harold and Leone Cole started in Asashina, but
were forced to leave because of Harold's illness. We visited
them in Asashina in 1978 and found them using the Japanese
lan^age effectively in Bible school and in teaching young
Christians. With some other missionaries, Warren has been
Kanto Engelistic Association, which has proved
effective in reaching people with the gospel.
Additional Information
I have been in Bible College teaching for 45 years. I was also a located
minister in three churches for a total time of about 17 years, contemporaneous
with part of the 45 years. Interest in world-wide missions developed over the
years as itiissioharies visited the churches where I ministered, and as they
visited the Bible college, Pacific Bible Seminary in Long Beach, later Pacific
Christian College, now in Pullerton, Calif. Early association with Harrold
McParland, as students in Bible College, led to an interest in his work
when he bagan the work of Mission Services. My visits to mission fields beg an
' in 1965 with a visit to the work of Guy Mayfield and others in Italy. This
was extended to other missionaries in Europe in 1968. Teaching Bible classes
in Lugano Christian Service Camp took me to Europe summer after summer. In
1975 our family travlled into.Mexico by car and visited a number of our
missioKJaries there. In 1978 Helen and I went around the world, visiting
I la number of mission fields in Asia and Europe. The northern Luzon field in
/ the Philippines was one of these. We were favorably impressed with the work
at Aparri. Then early this year, just when we were considdring a change of
ministry, we received an unsolicited invitation to help with the Aparri Bible
Seminary. So we made our decision to go there, feeling that God would bless
us in this. ^

Biographical sketch of Harvey (and Helen) Beard
After receiving his M.A. degree from Pacific Bible Seminary in 1936,
Harvey began teaching there* in the fall of that year. He bagan preaching
regularly in 1937, althou^ on a part-time basis as he continued to teach
in Pacific Bible Seminary. Missionaries often spoke at the Bible Seminary,
and a number of them spoke in the churches where he was preaching. In 1954
he left off regular preaching to give more time to the teaching in the
Bible college. In 1955 he and his family placed membership in the Parkcrest
church of Christ in Long Beach, and in 1956 he was made an elder in that church.
Shortly after that he was appointed chairman of the missionary committee of
the church, and served in that capacity for about 20 years. This involved
the reading of much missionary mail, and the corresponding with missionaries
about speaking dates in the church.
In 1965 Kenneth Stewart, then president of Pacific Bible Seminary, urged
Harvey to go on a tour of Bible Lands to be conducted by Prof. Robert Drake.
Alumni of P.B.S. and friends contributed to a fund to help with the tour
expense. These gifts continued to come during and even after the tour.
The last gift made the total of gifts equal the total cost of the tour. No
more gifts came after that. It would seem that the Lord knew how much to
send. Taking advantage of this opportunity to visit mission work, Harvey
visited Colegio Biblico,in Eagle Pass, Texas; Christian Woman's Benevolent
Association in St. Louis; College of the Scriptures in Louisville, Ky.;
Milliagan College; ihe Go Ye Chapel Mssion in East Islip, N.Y.; and the
American Bible Society in New York. While in Italy he took the opportunity
to visit Guy and Thelma Majrfield, and to see the Churches of Chnst in
southern Italy.
In 1968 Harvey and Helen made a trip to Europe and the Bible lands.
At the invitation of Guy Majrfield, Harvey tau^t a Bible class in the Lugano
Christian Service Camp, Here the Beards met many missionaries including
Sid and i^Iary Allsbury, Ed and Itory Pausz, Ron and Carolyn Butler, and others.
Harvey was invited to return to the Lugano camp, and did so every summer
(except 1975 and 1975) until. 1979 Luring these summer trips additional
teaching was done in Switzerlanidl, Germany, Belgium and France, throu^ the
courtesy of missionaries serving in those places. *
The Bible lands continued to have their attraction, and in^^1976 and
1977 Harvey and Helen accompanied tours organized throu^ Pacific Christian
College, which added much to their knowledge of the background of the Bible,
In 1978 Harvey took a half-year sabbatical to visit missionaries and to see
more of the Bible lands. So Harvey and Helen spent January to August going
around the world. Harvey had short teaching sessions in Hawaii, Japan,
^d
Korea, Hong Kong,/the Philippines, followed by a full semester of teaching
in Kenmore Christian College, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. After this
they visited the Eugene Morse family in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and lectured
there on the Bible lands.
Next they spent time seeing Bible sites in Iran, Turkey and Greece.
Following this they visited missionaries in Austria and Gemnany, and then
took part in the camp at Lugano. Harvey tau^t archaeology and Greek in
the camp. After camp they visited in Rome, Italy; Basel, S^d.tzerland; and
Birmingham, England, and then returned home.
Early in 1979 they were asked to spend a year at Aparri, Cagayan,
Philippines during the furloiigh of Charles and Roberta Selby. Harvey was
to teach Bible classes in the Aparri Bible Seminaiy, and Helen was to be
first grade teacher for Carolyn Boudreaux, dau^ter of missionaries Sid
and Itoj Boudreaux. One Sunday in late spring of 1979 Troy and Edna Heard,
Harvey
v7ho wi^re then attending church at Parkcrest in Long Beach, handed me an
him
envelope, saying that the Lord had told them to give-^e this amount for
the mission fund. The check was for $340. Vthy this odd amount? The money
was deposited in a savings account until the mission fund could be set up.
There it drew S5.00 interest. Then it was discovered that the budget fare
price for a one-way ticket to I'lanila was $545*00! The Lord provides.
The Beards left California in January, 1980 in order to have time,"
before the school year began in Aparri, to respond to invitations to visit
and teach in India and Thailand. Harvey taught Old Testament Survey in
Kulpahar, India to the men of the mission staff, while Helen taught Proverbs
to thel)women. At Bilaspur, Harvey taught Bzekiel to students in the
Christian Training Institute. The next place was Sitapur for a visit vTith
Bemel and Joan Getter, where Harvey was speaker at their annual convention.
The bus ride from Sitapur to Ambikapur was memorable for the long journey
of nine hours and the very crowded condition of the bus. Indian friends had
helped them get seats and had put all their luggage inside the bus. In Am
bikapur Bemel Getter met them and drove them to Sitapur in his jeep. Since
he was unable to buy any diesel, which was rationed, thejr/arrived in Sitapur
with the fuel supply virtually exhausted. V/hat a joy it was to be met by a
group of smiling, enthusiastic Indian school children and their welcome pro
gram, which included placing garlands of flovxers about the necks of the vis
itors.
The convention at Sitapur was a great experience, with the hundreds of
Indian Christians gathering to sing before sunrise, and continuing into the
ni^t. The Getters had planned to drive to Raigarh to put Beards, on the
9
train for Calcutta, but there was no diesel fuel. Prayer V7as made that the
Lord would supply fuel for the trip to Raigarh. And on the morning of the
day of departure, Brpther Getter reported that, "We have some diesel." This
was a blessing for the Getters as well as the Beards, since they needed to
purchase supplies in Raigarh and bring them back to Sitapur in the jeep.
In Thailand the Beards worked with Robert and Eugene Morse and others
in a Bible school on the Burma border for Christians from Burma. Harvey
taiig'ht 0. T. Survey, and Helen helped v/ith the children's program. Lessons
given in English were translated into Burmese by three capable translators.
People from Burma could cross into Thailand, but had to return in late after
noon. Glasses were held in the daytime hours for three weeks. Tr/o meals
were served each day at the church wfeere the classes were held. The menu
was alT^ays rice, soy bean curd, and other oriental delicacies. Not very
appetizing to wastem tastes, but the fellowship was superb. Helen enjoyed
visiting mth some Akha women. There were other compensationsstrawberry
shortcake made by Janet Bemo and served to the missionaries in the evening,
and the satisfaction of seeing many baptized at the end of the school.
In May the Beards were in Aparri to prepare for the school year which
began June 15. They were asked to stay for a second year, since Selbys had
decided to extend their furlough into a second year. Selbys returned to
Aparri in September, 1981. Again the Beards were asked to stay for a third
year, since it would be Boudreauxs' furlou^ year. Harvey taught O.T. history
and Pauline Epistles in tiio first two years, and is teaching Greek, Hebrew,
Ardhaeology and Books of Poetry in the third year. Helen taught Carolyn
her second grade work, and in the third year is involved in the Seminary
music program.
In 1982, at the close of the school year in Aparri, the Beards made a
return visit to Kulpaliar, India where Harvey taught Bible Geography to the
men of the staff, and Helen taught Philippians and Colossians to the women.
A brief visit v/as made in Chiang Mai, and then they spent three weeks in
Japan, visiting missionaries in the Tokyo area, and in Nagano Prefecture at
Shinshu Bible Camp, and with the V/arren Christiansen family.
Beards expect to return to California when the school year ends in March,
1983. God has supplied all our needs for travel and for daily living through
many friends who have contributed to our ministry. It has been a real blessing
to us to be allowed to work ;d.th Christians of other nationalities and cultures.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS,1979
Once a^ain it is the time of the year
when we remember our Saviour's birth* Al-
thou^ Els coming into the world at that
time was scarcely noticed, it has had endur
ing effects on the histoiy of the world.
And the announcement of the birth, made by
an angel and accompanied by a heavenly cho
rus, was directed to some shepherds, lowly
folk, attending to their chores as they kept
the sheep: "I bring you good tidings of
great joy, which shall be to all the people"
(not just the rulers and upper classes),
:^foT there has been bom to you today in the
city of David a Saviour who is Messiah the
Lord," (Luke 2:10-11). Thus did Gk)d indi
cate that His good news was for all levels
of society, and not just for the affluent
and well-to-do.
Today Christians need to realize that
it is the good news of Jesus Christ that
makes the difference in the histozy of na
tions. Kingdoms rise and fall, princes and
heroes come and go, but it is still ri^t-
eousness that exalts a nation, and ri^t-
eousness comes through the gospel of Jesus
Christ. There is no greater work that any
one can do than to see to it that the gospel
is carried to every tribe and tongue and
people and nation. May God bless you all as
you take part in this.
Our family was blessed this year with
the birth of our 13th grandchild, Joy, to
Euth and David Hoot. And all our children
have prospered dioring 1979- Our oldest son
david with his wife Sharon and their child-
renHeather, Joshua and Matthew moved last
June Into a house of their own at 4208
Heather Road, Long Beach 90808. Dave is
still a counselor at Lakewood Hi^ School.
He is also chaixman of the elders at Park-
crest Church of Christ. Roger, our second
son, is preaching minister at Parkcrest.
His wife Kaye and ixis dau^ters Karcella,
Kirsen, Tressa and Anne make up his happy
household. Our dau^ter Ruth with husband
David Root and children Jennifer, Jefferson,
Jamie, Jeremy, Joel and Joy have moved to
Eugene, Oregon where they are at home at 790
East 43rd Avenue, 97405. .Dave is a profes- '
sor of New Testament at Northwest Christian.
College. Our second datighter Martha woits'
at Morey's Music Store in Long Beach, is
organist for the University Christian Chumh
in Los Angeles, and does some private piano
teaching. She has a special friend who is a
student at Northwest Christian College this
school year. Our youngest son Philip and
his wife Jeannie are both working for the
Automobile Cliib of Southern California.
They have bought a home at 6718 Parkcrest
Street, Long Beach 90803. Philip graduated
last June from California State Tfiaiversity
at Long Beach. We rejoice in oiu: children
and grandchildren. If all 24 of us come
home at the same time,
small.
the house is too^
We wish you all joy at this time, and
a happy new year.
CAMPS IN EUROPE
The Suropean Christian Serrlce Camp
was "begun by r-Guy ^^rfield at.iugano, Swit
zerland Ia: 1964. It has met every year
since then. 'Its purpose is to draw together
Americans for Christian fellowship and edi
fication throu^ a Bible-oriented family
camp. The camp makes use of public camp
grounds which are plentiful in Europe.
Each family brings its own tent and camping
equipment, provides its own meals, and pays
its own campground fee. The Christian Serv
ice Camp program is supported by freewill
offerings. Several different campgrounds
near Lugano have been used by the camp,
i'Harvey and Helen first attended in 1968 at
; Campoticino, in a beautiful valley south of
Lugano.
In 1978 we both attended the camp at
Centre Quadri in Taveme, a town a few
kilometers north of Lugano. After this
camp, which closed a day early due to heavy
rain flooding part of the campground, it was
|,decided to move to Italy where prices are
: cheaper and the U.S. dollar buys more. So
: the, 1979 camp was held in the Alpine setting
of Jlolveno* Itedy. Molveno is a resort town
where Germans and Italians go to spend their
vacations. On the shore of a beautiful lake
with mountains towering above it, the town
and campground are in a beautiful natural
setting.
European camping and campgrounds are
different from the American variety. The
European tents are made for family living
away from home, where weather can vary from
brl^t sunshine to thunderstorms with heavy
rain. The larger tents have one or more
sleeping conq)artments with sewed in water
proof floor, a "living-room" area for cook
ing, eating, and general living, and a
"porch" or awning to extend the living area
and laep rain away from the door. Portable
tables, chairs, and other furnishings are
brou^t to meet the family's needs. The
tent is supported by a frame of metal tubing
over which the fabric fits snugly in order
^to resist the weather. Camp groxmds are
usually private businesses, with a daily
charge per person, per car, and per tent.
, A family may have a favorite campground to
which they retum year after year. Many
small businesses simply close up for sever^
weeks in the summer while the family goes
camping.
j Harvey has tau^t Bible classes in the
European Christian Service Camp most years
from 1968 to 1979. In 30 doing, he has met
the missionaries in Europe, as well as
Christian service men and their families.
He has also visited churches in Italy, Swit
zerland, Germany, Belgium, France, end Eng
land, and been privileged to teach in these
places.
In Italy, where a substantial group of
Churches of Christ has been formed, mostly
in southern Italy, there is a need for fel
lowship among the churches. In recent years
these churches have acquired a piece of land
for a church camp, and have bad camps there
this year and last year. The land is near
.Handuria, is dotted with olive and fig
'trees, and slopes south toward the Ionian
, Sea some two kilometers away. Their Chris
tian service camp began there on -August 10
this year. The general plan was the same as
in the American camp. Bach camper provided
his tent and food, and an offering takes
care of the expenses of the program.
Harvey was there for the first five
[j^days of the camp and taught a class in Bib-
^lical archaeology, and preached at one of
the vesper services. Since Italian is the
language of the camp, Bro, Malcolm Coffey
served as his interpreter. Mac and Wilma
Coffey and Evelyn Jones from Bari were the
missionaries in the camp this year. The
spirit of the camp was excellent. The Ital
ians love to sing, and the gospel songs nnd
choruses were sung enthusiastically. For
Harvey it was a crash course in Italian as
he tried to sing with them from their Ital
ian song book. An interesting Italian cus
tom is the late evening meal. The evening
vesper service was held at 6:45, and after
it was over, about-8.30 was suppertime. At
10:00 p.m. the day officially closed with a
prayer circle. "They of Italy salute you."

KULPAHAR,INDIA
In 1^47 missionaries Tom and LeotaV^
Rash with Leah Moshier and Dolly Chitwood
'arranged to purchase mission property at
Kulpahar from the United Christian Mission- /'
ary Society. With nearly 50 acres of land
in three parcels, and with a church build
ing, residences and other buildings, and 30
aged women to care for in a home for Chris-
tian widows, the work began. Missionaries
have come and gone over the yearn. For some
time a Bible College was maintained. The
Kulpahar Kids Home was begun to meet a real
need. New buildings have been built. A
school was started to give Christian child
ren an education from Christian teachers,
rather than from Hindus or Moslems in the
public school.
Through all the changes and growth,
Leah Moshier and Dolly Chitwood have contin
ued to serve there, directing the work and
seeing that this Christian community contin
ues to function and offer its services to
the people of the area. Recently Dolly has .
had to return home because of a serioiis ^
health problem with high blood pressure.^
l^ay for her healing and recovery.
At the present time there is a terrif
ic inflation problem at Kulpahar. Prices of
necessities have increased fo\ir to ten times
what they were. And besides that, the area
where Kulpahar is located received no rain
during the 1979 monsoon season. I^s makes
food scarce and drives the prices hi^er
than ever.
Leah and Dolly have invites us to
spend some time in Kulpahar, teaching Old
Testament and helping as we are able, for as
many weeks as we can be there. Pray for us
as we go there in the month of February.
Our primary task at Aparri will be
teaching Bible classes in Aparri Bible S^iw
inary. Charles and Roberta Selby will be on
furlou^ during the 1980-81 school year
^(June to March), and Harvey will be teaching
the classes Bro. Charles usually teaches.
The Selbys arrived in Aparri in June,
1947 and have been working there for the
past 32 years. In their first year they
tau^t Bible Institute classes in Aparri,
and then extended this work, along with
evangelistic meetings, into the provinces of
Isabels and Nueva Vizcaya, as well as Caga-
yan. The outgrowth of this effort is the
Aparri Bible Seminary and the churches and
other Christian enterprises of northern
Luzon, These include radio broadcasting, a
children's home, Christian high schools, and
an active publishing program.
