An Epistle from Ed
By Ed Cadwallader, Pastor

Recently I came across a tragic, yet very moving story. In December, 1997, a young man in West
Paducah, Kentucky, took a gun to school and killed seven of his classmates. Parents came from all
over the community, frantically praying a parent's most heartfelt prayer: Not my child. Please don't let
anything happen to my child. The story goes on to tell of one mother whose prayer was not answered
that day. Her son died in the shooting. In spite of her shock and grief, the mother didn't hesitate when
doctors asked if she would donate her son's organs to someone else in critical need.
Many months passed and the mother discovered that some of her son's organs went to a Methodist
pastor. She contacted him and asked to meet. On the day of their meeting, the grieving mother and the
grateful pastor talked and prayed and celebrated the life of the precious son who died. The mother
asked one last question: "Can I put my ear to your heart? Can I hear my son's heart beating, one more
time?"
Isn't this mother's story similar to God's story in our lives? Indeed, when God wants to hear His Son's
heart beat, He can put His ear to our chest. Christ died so that we might live - that's how loved we are.
When we accept Jesus into our hearts as our Savior and Lord, we are recipients of a heart transplant.
We are living a new life. It is Jesus' heart beating in our chests.
May we experience Jesus' beating heart in each of our lives, and moreover, may we reach out to a
hurting world that needs Him just as much as we do.
May Jesus' heart beat strong in our life and every life that is surrendered to Him.
Think about it...
Meals-On-Wheels
By Jane Siefers, Hospitality Committee

Meals-on-Wheels is back as an independent service providing meals to
housebound clients in the northern area. Bradford Woods Community
Church is very happy to resume our role as an annual donor of baked
desserts, and we are now on the calendar for October. No more August baking! Any type and any
amount of dessert is welcome. MOW will distribute some items immediately, but the rest will be
frozen and handed out as needed. Our neighbor Barb Milcoff is coordinating the receipt of dessert
items and has passed on the following tips/requests: of the approximately 40 clients served daily, only
three are on special diets, which Barb handles personally. For the rest, just make whatever you would
like. Barb says, We welcome your creativity, but some of our favorites are cookies, brownies, krispy
treats, bundt type cakes, quick breads and muffins. Please wrap individual portions in baggies, if
possible. The only caveat from Barb is that Soft icings make products more difficult to bag; harder
frostings and glazes seem to work better. Please consider donating three dozen or more desserts so we
can meet our goal of providing at least a week of home-baked goodies to some folks who will really
appreciate them. The drop-off date will be Sunday, October 12. If you would like to contribute baked
goods but will not be able to attend church on Oct. 12, please contact Jane Siefers (724-935-4028) to
arrange a drop-off earlier in the preceding week.
Blessing Of The Animals
By Caitalyn Kowal, Office Manager

Please attend the special 'Blessing of the Animals' that will be held in the
ball field, under the tent, as part of the 11:00 a.m. worship service on
October 5. Bring your furry, feathery or scaly family members to this fun
pet friendly event (but Joe and Norma: you may want to leave the bees at
home, haha). St. Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, loved the larks flying about his hilltop town.
He and his early brothers, staying in a small hovel, allowed themselves to be displaced by a donkey. A
special ceremony called the Blessing of the Animals is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of
Assisis love for all creatures. You dont want to miss this unique service!

Annual Congregational Meeting, Oct. 26
By Norma Liebenguth, Chair
Church Council

Please plan to attend the annual congregational meeting following the worship service on
Sunday, October 26. The proposed 2015 budget and slate of candidates for the BWCC
Church Council will be presented and voted upon. A majority of the membership is required for these things to pass and
for church business to resume. Everyone may and is encouraged -- to attend this meeting, but only members (age 18
and over) may vote. At this time, we need new faces to represent the church body. Here are positions that need to be
filled. A brief description, taken from the Church Constitution and By-Laws, follows each position. However, each
committee has the right to interpret the official definition.
Trustees - There are six Trustees who have power over all matters pertaining to the control of finances and property of
the Church. Trustees generally meet once a month and should, when available, attend the monthly meeting of Church
Council.
Worship Committee - This person would work with Sue Bayer to build awareness and celebration of the spiritual
aspects of church. Among other things, this includes setting up for Holy Communion, securing substitute organists and
decorating the sanctuary for seasonal celebrations.
Christian Education - Christian Ed is responsible for the administration of the educational program of the Church.
Responsibilities may include Sunday School, Adult Bible classes, Vacation Bible School. A new member would serve
with Norma Liebenguth and Carla Porterfield.
Missions - This committee is responsible for the outreach of the Church. Responsibilities include the coordination of
mission activities and the distribution of mission funds. A new member would serve with Jean Hipwell and Jennie
Griffin.
Outreach Committee - This committee is responsible for spreading the Christian Gospel. Lay visitations, promoting
new members classes and receiving new members, publications and publicity fall under this committee. Any new
people on this committee would work with Joe Bayer.
Hospitality Committee - The Hospitality Committee is responsible for fostering friendship and fellowship within the
church. A new person would serve with Jane Siefers and Amy Atkinson.
Chairperson of Ushers - Unfilled for sometime, this person is responsible for providing ushers for weekly and special
services.
If you have any questions about these positions, please see me or Joe Bayer. And, if you cannot make the meeting,
proxies will be available from the church office (724) 935-3135 or BWCC@consolidated.net. Thank you for considering
a position, and for your concern for your church.
Election Day
By Jane Siefers, Hospitality Committee

Mark your calendars! We had such a great response previously to our Election Day Bake Sale Soup
Preview Lunch that we are doing it again (maybe with a shorter title). On November 2, Hospitality will
host a soup lunch to get us all into the mood for the election day bake sale the following Tuesday. As
usual, there will be a selection of soups, beverages and dessert. More details will follow in the next newsletter.
Thank You

Stewardship for 2015
By Mike Slater, Chair, Trustees

Last month, the Trustees met to create a church budget for 2015.
As for any budgeting process, the previous budget and the year-
to-date actuals were analyzed to see whether current needs were
being met and to anticipate possible changes in future needs. Sadly, our income continues to be substantially below ex-
pectations. So we discussed why income is insufficient and what must be done to change the situation.
Lack of income means that it will be impossible to present a budget that has any increases in discretionary spending.
Rather, potential expenses need to be cut. So, like last year, we will need to follow a bare-bones budget in 2015.
Unfortunately, this means once again freezing employee salaries that were reduced several years ago. We are fortunate to
have such caring people in our employ, but we all need to recognize that they are severely underpaid. The proposed
budget is a reflection of the number of members, the number of people attending each Sunday, and our current income.
None of these has increased sufficiently to justify any salary increases. The proposed budget reflects cuts to meet that
decline in income.
So, what can be done to increase our employees compensation and fund the programs we need to continue the life of the
church? The simple answer is to increase income. We need existing members to contribute more, and we need to attract
new members. Members need to pledge annual donations that at least equal the expectations of the budget. Currently our
pledges reflect a mere 25% of the 2014 budget.
Stewardship is the financial support of the church. We hope this helps you understand our budget situation. Please
consider pledging for 2015 when the Stewardship drive begins in November.
Thank You
By Ed Cadwallader, Pastor

We want to offer our heart felt thanks for all of the prayers and thoughtful messages that were sent our way recently
following the passing of Pennies father, Jim Harding. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Church in Thessalonica, persuading
them; Therefore encourage one another and build up one another each day. Certainly all of you have done this for us,
during this difficult time, and we appreciate your caring so much. - Pennie, Ed, Jay & Ben
