While they were there, the time came for
the baby to be born, and she gave birth to
her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in
cloths and placed him in a manger, because
there was no room for them in the inn.
– Luke 23:6-7
Luke’s words are some of the most
beloved ever written. They’ve inspired
countless Christmas pageants, paintings,
songs, hymns, television programs and
movies, not to mention sermons. They stir
faith, hope and love.
The fact that Mary gave birth in a stable
and they slept in crude surroundings has
evoked sadness and sorrow for the holy
family. But who should receive the greatest
pity? Gospel singer and comedian Mark
Lowry writes:
I’ll tell you whom I feel sorry for – all the
people in the motel who missed it. They
were there! They were in the same time
period. They didn’t have to learn of this
event 2000 years after the fact, like we did.
While they were lying in their beds, trying
to get some rest…they missed it! They
could have walked right out to the stable
and witnessed the coming of the
Messiah!…But they were too busy with the
mundane to notice the eternal. (Mary Did
You Know, p. 35)

Lisa and I recently had the privilege of
playing in the CrossWise production of
Heaven Tonight! Christmas Edition. We
played the Innkeeper and his wife. In
researching the story, we discovered that the
“inn” was most likely not a commercial
operation where people paid to stay. The
Greek word actually refers to a guest room,
probably in the home of a relative or friend.
In other words, Jesus’ own family missed the
majesty of the moment.
We are His family, too. Like his relatives
who missed the majesty in Bethlehem, we
sometimes miss it, too. For many, Christmas
has become a time of mundane busyness; a
frenzied and frantic month long marathon.
For some, the season begins with smiles and
ends with snarls. “I’m glad it’s over,” is
commonly heard on December 26.
I don’t want to miss Him this year and I
know you don’t, either. He was present in
Bethlehem and He is present with us. We
can find Him:
– When we serve those in need (Matt.
25:31-46).
– When we gather with His church (Matt.
18:20).
– When we’re weary and need help (Matt.
18:28)

ANNIVERSARY Class was opened on Nov. 8 with
prayer by Chastine Wieting. Pat Whiteley brought our
devotion on God’s Word. He read two poems God
has given him the words to. Richard’s lesson was on
“Thankfulness.” Class was opened on Nov. 15 with
prayer by Dorothy Wynne. Chastine Wieting brought
our devotion on “Calling on God for help.” Mary
Margaret was on the 23rd Psalm. Glad to have Jim
Gettman visit this morning. Refreshments were
brought by Dorothy Wynne. Nina opened class on
Nov. 22 with prayer. Nancy Ostroff brought our
devotion singing, “Lord of All.” Patsy’s lesson was
on “Stretching our Souls.” A nominating committee
was elected consisting of Nina Wakefield, John and
Mozell Skinner, Estelle and Buddy Holley and Maxine
Josh Moore -- Mother: Mary Peterson. Glad to have Nancy and Tony visiting today.
Tracy Moore, Grandparents: Thanks to Nine and Tracey for refreshments. Class
David and Susie Tracy was opened on Nov. 29 with prayer by Bill Sutton.
Diane McWhorter brought our devotion on “What to
say when you say good-bye.” Buddy’s lesson was on
more Thanksgiving. Louse Carter fell and broke her
hip and shoulder. Thanks to the Suttons for
refreshments. Dick Phillips opened class with prayer
on Dec. 6. Mitch Stevens brought our devotion on
“Black and White Found in Christ.” Estelle’s lesson
was on “Nicholas of Myra.” Louise has been moved
to a rehab hospital in Denton. Thanks to Nina
Wakefield for refreshments. We were so glad to have
Mary Westbrook with us today.
CHALLENGE This morning, Nov. 8, Marty Walker
shared her favorite scripture verse with us: Micah
6:8. “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and
what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to
love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” In
this verse, God’s principles for living have been
condensed into three requirements: to be honest and
just in all we do; to be kind and compassionate to
others; and to live in humble submission to Him.
Philippians 2:13 reminds us that it is through God
that we are able to live according to His will. Bob
Cunningham led us in prayer. The Challenge class
joined the Two-by-Two class for a weekend away at
the Prothro Center on Nov. 13-15. It was a great time
of spiritual and physical renewal. Pastor Ed led our
Friday evening session with a talk about resiliency.
Our Saturday and Sunday sessions were led by
Freddie Boswell who talked about help for hurting
people. We were all blessed by class members who
Lucy Thompson shared their stories of walking with God through
Parents: David and Alison hurting times. The Prothro Center is a beautiful place

Grandparents: Josh and class and the Covenant class joined together on Nov.
HeaSook Thompson 22 to hear Don Allen talk about his missionary work
in Zambia. Don and his wife have spent the last few
years in a ministry of training Christian pastors and
leaders throughout Zambia. His message was from
Galatians 2 and 3 and reminded us that Christ lives
in us and that we cannot live a Godly life without
Him. We enjoyed seeing Don and Gwen again and
hearing about their exciting work in Africa. Jeri
Thompson’s teaching on Nov. 29 was “Why Are We
Created?” We are created for God’s purpose and His
purpose is to do His will. And His will is to praise
and worship Him. In the lesson, Jeri answered the
questions: why we should praise God; how we should

Parents: Billy and Amber Woods This was a very helpful lesson for us to meditate on
as we begin the Advent season. Bob Cunningham
led us in prayer. John Wilks taught a lesson on Dec. 6
on the incarnation. In discussing the Imagio Dei (the

image of God) we find that God created man in His image,
but that in our fall from grace, that image becomes distorted,
but not destroyed. God’s intent, through His grace, is to
restore the whole order of creation. There are personal
implications in the incarnation. God tabernacles or goes
with us. When Jesus came to dwell among us, he became
the author and perfecter of our faith. Jesus is also the source
of our forgiveness. And if God forgives us everything, how
can we be unforgiving to others. John also talked about
obedience being a gift of grace. Our physical body is also
a gift from God and, therefore, we should take care of it.

KOINONOI Our sympathy and continued prayers to
Mike and Sherri Lamar. During class time we have been
studying “Christ Up Close & Personal” by Josh
McDowell. We have learned about the clear and
compelling evidence that shows God’s Word has been
recorded exactly (remember the description of the
scribes’ painstaking work!) and has been relayed
accurately — God’s love letter to us! Scripture is reliable,
and God can be trusted! Thank you, Marsha, for leading
discussions. Thanks to Jim and Linda Bayless for hosting
our annual campfire and cookout in November — we
had a great time. A big thank you to all class members
who provided food or served at the Manor on
Thanksgiving Day. Remember our service project on
Tuesday evening, December 15th in Anderson Hall, 5:30-
8:30, getting the Christmas baskets started. Bring your
favorite side dish or snack to go with pizza, when we
take a break for supper. Remember to pray for each other
and for our church family daily!
TWO BY TWO On Nov. 8, we had a good lesson
taught by Jim Gettman. In Ephesians 5, the Apostle Paul
stressed that we must get our life under control whether
it be sexual immorality, foolish obscenity, greed or
impurity. As children of God we need to live as children
of light. Today we missed the Matthews and Shirley
Jackson. Our retreat was on the weekend of Nov. 13-15
at Lake Texoma. What an incredible time we had as Ed
Lantz and Freddy Boswell drew us closer to the Lord.
Ed’s message on “Resilience” was so timely as he spoke
about being able to readily recover from illness,
depression, adversity, or the like. We are so thankful for
Ed and Lisa being a part of our retreat. They are such an
inspiration. As we get to know them better, we are so
grateful they are at Tyler Street. Freddy’s message was
from his heart as he spoke on relationships. It was
powerful. And I’m sorry if you missed it. His theme was:
“We are hurting, Lord, do you care?” Freddy and Bekah
took the time to be a part of our retreat even though they
had to leave for Kenya the next day! Oh, how we so
appreciate their faithfulness! We thank the Lord for our
teacher, Mitch Stevens on Nov. 22. Please come again,
Mitch. We have had several birthdays during the month
of November: Don Lindholm, Tony Ostroff. November
anniversaries: the Matthews and Philcoxes. Our
Christmas Party is Dec. 12 at Babe’s in Cedar Hill then
we are going to JoAnn Schroeder’s home for dessert and
coffee. We were thrilled to have Millie Lindsay back in
class after a painful broken knee injury. Don’t you just
love our new Tyler Street newspaper. We are grateful to
all those who have labored to put it together. And
remember, Jesus is the reason for the season. On

November 30, Marsha Griffin led our songs. Dennis
Jeter blessed us with his timely message. We praise
the Lord for Millie’s recovery. She starts therapy next
week. Remember her and the Philcoxes in your
prayers. We’re looking forward to our Christmas
party. Our hearts go out to the Lamars in the loss of
their grandson.
WEDDING RING Class opened on Nov. 8 with Ed
Logan at the piano. We sang “Turn Your Eyes Upon
Jesus” followed by “Shepherd of Love.” Prayer was
by Joe. LaVerne gave the devotion about a grandma
driving her car. We were pleased to hear Evelyn report
we had NO sick report! We had two former members
visit today, Marie Bourell from Austin and Myron
Fansler from Pottsboro. We also had Estelle and
Buddy Holley with us. Estelle brought a wonderful
lesson using the title “Thanking God.” Yes, “thanks”
is such a valuable word. Her lesson was taken from
Luke 17:11 and Mark 1:40. Estelle, we give you our
“Grateful Thanks” for bringing us such a blessing in
“lesson form.” On Nov. 15, Barbara Bolin of the
Anniversary Class came to announce their Christmas
party to which we are invited. It will be at Barbara’s
house on Saturday December 5th from 1 to 3 p.m.
More information later. We then sang “He Keeps Me
Singing” and “In My Heart There Rings a Melody.”
Joe presided since R.E. had the lesson. Evelyn’s sick
report was about Frank. He has been to Charlton this
past week but allowed to come home. Everyone send
him a card to cheer him up. Tom had our prayer. Nina
returned after a long absence and gave a delightful
devotion “Lord, Prop Us Up.” R.E. then brought a
wonderful lesson using the Old Testament starting
with Genesis and Exodus. Myron has rejoined our
class since he is moving back to Dallas. Welcome!
The 2x2 Class is on retreat so we had 3 visitors of
that class who were unable to go. Nov. 22 class opened
with Ed Logan playing for us to sing “Come, Ye
Thankful People” followed with “The Church’s One
Foundation.” R.E. prayed before our collection.
Myron said a beautiful Prayer of Thanks. Evelyn’s
report was Herbie and family were on their way to
MN due to son-in-law’s mother in critical condition.
Frank is back in hospital again. Evelyn gave a
wonderful devotion about “This Lovely World” and
we should “Count Our Blessings.” Ace then taught
his great lesson from Acts 8. We are so thankful to
have Ace teach. Bless his heart, he will be “it” until
Frank is able to return. On Nov. 29, class opened with
LaVerne at the piano in Ed’s absence. We sang “Have
Thine On Way, Lord” followed by “He Lives.”
Evelyn’s report on Frank was better. This was birthday
Sunday so Mary Etta had a nice devotion on
Thankfulness is a Habit. Birthdays for our “twins”
Dorothy and Joe who celebrated on Thanksgiving
Day. Ace followed with his very excellent lesson
continuing in Acts 9. We are so blessed to have Ace
filling in full time at present. On Dec. 6, class opened
with Ed Logan at the piano and we sang “Jesus Is
Coming” followed by “Jesus Is Coming Again.” Ed
said these were written for use during Advent Season.
Both songs were new to us. Herby followed with a
most unusual devotion “My Morning Resolved”.

Frank is getting better but the Dr says he must stay
in two more weeks. Ed Brown is back home now after
a long absence. We have really missed him. We hope
he can return soon. Ace, our faithful teacher continued
his study of Acts. We’re now in Chap. 10 hearing
what Peter has to say about Jesus and his teachings.

 Window
To the Soul
In Mark 6:45-53, we see that Jesus sent
His disciples across the lake in a boat while
He stayed behind to dismiss the people and
pray. During the night, the disciples began to
“strain at the oars” because the wind had
come up and was blowing against them.
They thought they could make it on their
own, with their own strength. In the middle
of the night, about 3:00 a.m., Jesus came
walking across the water, and the disciples
were terrified. But Jesus said “Take courage.
It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Then He got in the
boat, the winds died down, and they made it
safely to the other side.
Like the disciples in the boat, all of us are
also on a journey. Life is a journey from
birth to death. And along the way, a lot of

packages for our Community Service Outreach to give to those who are without a home.
Straining at the Oars

things can happen; some good and some
bad. Every journey is different. But one
thing is constant: we will all face times
when it seems the wind is blowing against
us; that it seems our boat is about to sink,
and we begin to feel afraid. And so often,
our first reaction is to “strain at the oars”
and try to get through our problem with our
own strength.
Verse 48 says that Jesus saw the disciples
straining at the oars, so He went out to
them, walking on the lake. Jesus sees us too,
and makes Himself available to us. It is at
that moment, we must make a critical
decision. We must decide whether to
continue to go on in our own strength and
let Him pass us by, or to ask Him into our

Our Church Family
boat and help us get through.
Jesus will never force His way into our
boat. He will allow us to work ourselves to
exhaustion if that is what we choose. But, if
we acknowledge His presence, and ask Him
into our boat, He will answer “Take courage.
It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
It is important to note that Jesus did not
magically transport the disciples immediately
to the other side. Instead, He got into the boat
with the disciples, and journeyed with them
across the lake. He shared their experience.
He shared their hard work. He shared the
darkness of the night. But, He also shared the
sunrise early in the morning.
Just because Jesus gets in our boat with us
does not mean our problems are solved, or
that our pain will go away, or that our
suffering is over. It does mean that Jesus is
there with us for the rest of the journey,
however it ends. He will give us the strength
to make it through the night. His very presence
will give us a peace we did not have before.
Whatever you are going through today, ask
Jesus into your boat with you. He is already
standing there waiting for the invitation. With
Jesus with you in the boat, you can face
whatever adverse wind is blowing against you.

Evangelism

Myth #4: Evangelism is not my gift. I have tried it before and failed.
So what if you think you failed in the
past! Fear of failure should not hold you
back from trying again. God does not judge
us by results, but by our willingness to be
faithful and obedient. Yet even the word
“evangelism” tends to fill us with fear and
guilt. But sometimes even the best prepared
Christian can blow it. Why do you think
God told us so many stories of people in the
Bible? Look at the life of Peter. He made
many mistakes including denying Jesus. Yet
Jesus loved him and forgave him and Peter
went on to become a great leader of the
early Church. God allows us to make
mistakes and He is the God of second
chances.
If the approach you tried earlier was
uncomfortable, then pray about finding a
better way to reach the lost. Each of us is
unique and there is a way that will fit your
God-given temperament. If fear or anxiety
is keeping you from sharing your faith,
remember Paul’s word to Timothy: “For
God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a

We should also realize that some people
may reject our message. Jesus was aware of
this. In Mark 6:11 he said: “And if any
place will not welcome you or listen to you,
shake the dust off your feet when you leave,
as a testimony against them.” Jesus made it
clear that the listeners were responsible for
what they did with the gospel message they
heard. The disciples were not to blame if
the message was rejected as long as they
had faithfully and carefully presented it. We
are not responsible when others reject the
gospel, but we do have the responsibility to
share it.
Reaching out to others with the good
news does involve some risk taking, but
God will not take us into situations that we
cannot handle. And remember, it is the job
of the Holy Spirit to convert. We are just
called to do the very best we can and then
trust the Holy Spirit to speak through what
we say and do. All God requires is your

Thanksgiving 2009 with the Matzkes

Our lawn is carpeted with crisp, brown
and yellow leaves, and pecans that have
fallen from the trees. The girls have settled
well into their schools and are looking
forward to a week off from school. We feel
cozy and settled for our first Thanksgiving
in our home in the USA and are thankful for
God’s many good gifts to us.
