National English Festival

2014
English Festival is one of the challenging programs carried out by English Student Association
(ESA). Previously, EF was conducted over East Java in which consists of five competitions both
for varsity and senior high school. However, this year English Festival is held nationally for some
competitions such as English Speech, Essay Writing, and News Reading. For you all, see you in
NEF 2014.

Challenges

Islamic University of Malang

English Student Association (ESA) is an English student organization under
presidency of Student Governor Faculty of Teacher Training and Education which
focuses on fostering its members English proficiency gradually. There have been
myriad English programs done successfully during this half presidency such as
National English Seminar, English Learners Club, and English Debating Forum. We,
certainly, are aware that fostering the English proficiency is also needed for other
people. Therefore, the only appropriate way to do so is by conducting several
beneficial events.

National English Festival (NEF) has always been one of the events ESA FKIP
UNISMA proudly presents. NEF is the compilation between linguistics field and
English as communication media. The purpose of this event is to
facilitate participants in fostering their skills and talents through a competitive yet
sportive atmosphere of English competitions. To achieve the purpose, we present
you The National English Festival 2014 with on Empowering the Youths
through English for the Critical and Global Challenges as its theme. This theme
is chosen because NEF is one of the events where the participants
can improve their abilities, not only in terms of English linguistic but also in being
brave, competitive, open-minded, and to put forward ideas to the general
public. This output will be utilized as a power for the youths to compete
supportively in this global and critical world.

NEF 2014 has five competitions such as Essay Writing, Olympiad, Debate,
Speech, and News Reading. The objective of holding this event to enable the
participants improve their abilities in English through a competitive, critical and
supportive competition.

Thus, we humbly invite you to participate in this nation-wide, prestigious,
and challenging event. Enclosed with this invitation are registration forms and
further explanations. We hope you can be a part of NEF 2014 so that together we
can help developing the usage of English in daily life of the society.

THE COMPETITIONS
1. DEBATE

Debate is a competition where two teams put forward their arguments on the
providedmotion. The system used in this competition is the Asian Parliamentary
System. Each team consists of three speakers and each of them will deliver their
speeches for 7 minutes, followed by a reply speech for 3 minutes. This competition
consists of four Preliminary Rounds. The Elimination Round will be held on May
10th. While, the Final Round will be conducted on May 11th.

2. NEWS READING

News Reading is a competition where the participants will deliver news in English
just like professional news anchors on television. The news will be provided by
the committee. Participants are required to pay attention to appearance,
articulation, pronunciation, and eye contact. The Elimination Round will be held
on May 9th. While, the Final Round will be conducted on May 10th.

3. SPEECH

Speech is a competition where participants will deliver speech from the essay that
theyhave made based on the theme determined by the committee. The time given
to eachparticipant to deliver his/her speech is at least 5 minutes and maximum 8
minutes. Theaspects which will be assessed in this competition are the content of
the speech, structure and grammar, pronunciation, expression, their way of
presenting the speech, mastery of the speech, and timeliness. The Elimination
Round will be held on May 10th. While, the Final Round will be conducted on
May 11th.

4. OLYMPIAD

Olympiad is a competition where participants are asked to do a multiple-choice
test like TOEFL and IELTS. The questions are officially written by English lecturers
and Professors at UNISMA. This olympiad will be held in each brach city for the
elimination round, and the final round will be held in UNISMA after the committee
has selected five best participants form each city. The Elimination Round will be
held on May 4th in each branch city. While, the Final Round will be conducted
on May 11th.


5. ESSAY WRITING

Unlike other competitions, essay writing which is presented only for university
students aims at improving participants writing ability on current topics both
national and international. As its name is essay, the participants will be assigned
to put forward their ideas on an analytical paragraph with the given topics.

Regulation :
This competition is opened for the senior high school and university students throughoutIndonesia (national scale).
The participants are limited, 50 students for senior high school and 50 students for university.
The participants should fulfill these requirements :
o A registration form that has been filled
o A copy of students identity card
o Two black and White pictures 3x4

Mechanism :
Preliminary Round (News Reading)
o The participants should read news that committee has already
provided 10 days before technical meeting (5 minutes).
Octo Final (Sport News)
o The participants will show the news in relax condition. They should
be attractive news presented together with their new partner that the committee
chooses randomly (7 minutes).
Quarter Final (News Report)
o The participants should make their own news and perform it (5
minutes).
Semi Final (Live Report)
o The participants will be told about the problem as news (ex: Traffic
jam) and make and perform a live report in front of the audience (5 minutes).
Grand Final (News Reading)
o The participants should perform 3 kinds of news that are given on the
spot (15 minutes).

Topics of Essay (choose one of them)
1. A life Sentence for Corruptor

Corruption is a word that is popular in Indonesia. Corruption is an adverse action
wherethey use a state fund that was supposed to benefit the people but they
instead use them for private purposes. After getting out from the prison, they still
do the same thing. This condition is very apprehensive. They are never cured with
the penalty. What do you think if they were given a life sentence?

2. Student Orientation For University Students

Student Orientation (OSPEK) is a historic momentum for new students. This
activity aims tointroduce the campus which is the responsibility the University to
socialize life in universitylearning and implementation process involving elements
of university leaders, faculty,students, and other elements related. But
unfortunately, OSPEK activities in Indonesia are often filled by violence in the form
of verbal and even physical violence. With the concept of a junior should obedient
to the seniors, any orders. So often times the
participants woreclothes and unfair ornaments even to be willing to accept
the physical punishment from thesenior even lead to death. In your opinion, do you
agree with OSPEK or not? Clarify your answer.

3. Special Guard for Government

Surely we've seen the group of the patrol vehicle who has a duty as escort of
particular vehicle on the road. They rang the siren which aims to all other
motorists give way for them. We certainly think that they are important group. But
sometimes we meet the same vehicle group but they are not escorted by a patrol
vehicle. And in another time, we find a luxury car with a black plate or special
escort civilians carried out by sounding a siren. In your opinion, do you agree with
special guard or not? Clarify your answer.
