I. INTODUCTION

The exploration begins, now. Upon hearing the country Philippines, what sets in
our minds are the following: its origin, historical, geographical and more hidden
backgrounds, its cultural icons of identity or popular images, wonderful sceneries or
tourist destinations and so on and so forth.

Appreciating a countrys uniqueness or special identifying features thru its icons
or popular images seems like munching peanuts, like signature brands or perhaps
trademarks that will identify the place they come from such like our land or country,
Philippines.

Deep down every one of us there is an adventurer, an eternally youthful spirit
that hungers for new and strange and wondrous experience. This most consuming
desire to visit unknown places has been spurred by a wish to increase ones knowledge
of the word. It is an ancient longing, far more ancient than that of man who on seeing
hawk flying overhead, wished that he too could fly as far as the hawk could fly.

This research sets up those which are known not yet by our own knowledge and
understanding from our basic education in our textbooks. But, it consists of more newly
explored information which are being gathered from different researches, informative
books, documentations and other ideas from different people who had experienced and
spoiled out their brilliant ideas and thoughts for the bottom secret of our motherland.

Thenceforth, we serve you this documents sorted with the answers of your
knotting mind. Answers that shall give fulfillment to your asking souls whats within our
research. We chose this one because we want you to refresh your stock up knowledge
in your sleep filled mind. We want to give you the best of the bests features of
Philippines which we nearly forgotten. We want to bring back the emerging appreciation
of the newborn generation of the Philippines.

II. BODY

I. PEARL OF THE ORIENT

A. Origin

During the early ages, many Filipinos use pearls for accessories. The
Philippines as we all know is really surrounded by different bodies of water
because of these, many sea divers dive in seas just to get big and beautiful
pearls. The Philippines is also rich in natural resources containing beautiful
places due to these, they export different size of pearls in the different parts of
the country.
1

B. Definition

The orient is a term which means the East. It is a traditional designation
for anything belonging to the eastern world or the Far East, in relation to Europe.
In English it is a metonym describing various parts of Asia. It was also used to
indicate the eastern direction in historical astronomy as the adjective oriental.
2

C. Physical Features and Characteristics

The alluring beauty of the Far East is seemed through its contrasts of
culture, lifestyle and climate. Somehow every one of us has the desire to live and
settle into a paradise that would provide ease and quiet enjoyment. To many, the
east could provide such a place: a place that would satisfy every transient and
visitor in their desires for a great deal of pleasure where life could be more
interesting and exceptionally unique.
3

D. Lingering Legacy

Despite the fact that the Philippines are constantly plagued with political
crises, the Filipinos possess many fine attributes. One warm Filipino trait is
hospitality. All peoples are hospitable in their own way, but Filipinos hospitality is
something that is beyond comparison.

This kind of hospitality has been misunderstood by many foreigners, particularly
by the Spanish adventurers of the past who thought that profuse hospitality was
a form of inferiority and subservience. One trait that will always remind me of the
Filipino people is their loyalty to a friend. For the Filipino, friendship is sacred
and symbolizes mutual aid under any circumstances. This lingering legacy stays
in the heart of the Filipino people where its essence has remained.

II. PHILIPPINES

A. Background
1. Geographical Background

1.1 Geography comes from the Greek words geo (earth) and
graphein (to write about or to describe). It is the study of the earth as the
home of mankind. Geography is linked with the study of natural sciences
and social sciences. It is often referred to as the queen of the sciences
for its ability to integrate the different specialized disciplines.

Popularly referred to as the pearl of the orient, the Philippines has
been known for its scenic beauty and natural resources. It is an
archipelago consisting of 7,107 islands with Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao
as the major ones. With a tropical climate, the Philippines is basically an
agricultural country. Historically, the Philippines is strategically located.

Philippines lie within the pacific basin and has a tropical climate.
Rainy season normally occurs from June to December. Summer starts in
January, but without a doubt the months of March and April are the
warmest.

The Philippines is an archipelago that is known as the pearl of the oriental
beauty and enchantment because of its rare scenic views and tourist
attractions. It consists of more than 7,000 islands and islets: it is located
off the southeast principal islands: the Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The
Philippines has a total land area of 116,000 sq. miles. Its neighbors are
Taiwan to the north, Hongkong to the northwest, Brunei and Malaysia to
the southwest and Vietnam to the west.

Legaspi Vill., 2002), 8.
2. Historical Background

History was derived from the ancient Greek word historia which
means narrative, account, record, or a learning by inquiring. It is
classified as a social science which is concerned with the narration of past
events. As a field of study, it studies and interprets record of human
events preserved through written or unwritten sources.

2.1 Pre-colonial Period

The story of the ten bornean datus who escaped from their
places due to the cruelty of their king is a historical proof of the kind
and class of people who migrated and lived in the Philippines.
Various theories as to the origin of the Filipinos still continue to
clash in debated; yet one thing is sure-archeological excavations in
the Philippines are presenting evidence that ancient men lived in
the Philippines as early as 50,000 years ago.

2.2 Spanish Colonization

The rediscovery of the Philippines by the Ferdinand
Magellan on March 17, 1521 paved the way for the conquest and
colonization of the Spaniards. Political and economic policies
implemented by the colonial government caused the Filipinos to be
abused and discriminated.

2.3 Rise of Filipino Nationalism

The birth of Filipino nationalism came about during the
nineteenth century. It was brought by the influx of liberal ideas into
the country, the rise of the educated middle class and the
martyrdom of the three priests, known as the GOMBURZA. Filipino
nationalism during this time was expressed in two forms: liberal
nationalism and radical nationalism.

B. Origin

The first Philippine settlers were believed to be negritos, or aetas, who travelled
to the archipelago over seven thousand years ago. Later, Austronesian tribes followed,
bringing along with them trade ventures with the Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Indians.
Portuguese explore Ferdinand Magellans arrival to the Philippines in 1521 as a
Spanish expedition was the republics first western influence that led it to become a
permanent Spanish colony for over 300 years. The country was thus named the
Philippines in honor of the Spanish king Philip II. Previously a largely Hindu and Islamic
settlement, the arrival of the Spanish also brought about a huge conversion of the
natives to Catholicism.

The Philippines came into being as a result of geological changes that took
places thousands of years ago. Three geological processes were involved:
diastrophism, volcanism, and gradation. The rise and falling of the earths surface and
other changes in the positions of rocks is called diastrophism. Many scientists do not
know the exact causes of diastrophism. Many facts show, however, that there is a
balance between the different parts of the earths crust. Scientists claim that rocks of
continents are lighter than rocks in the deeper parts of the ocean. Continents were
formed as a result of the sinking of the rocks around them. These heavier rocks sank
deeper into the ocean and pushed the lighter rocks into the surface, forming masses of
land.

The Philippines, officially known as the REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES, does
a unitary presidential constitutional republic comprise three main geographical divisions.
The country lies in Southeast Asia where manila, the national capital region, and the
provinces lie within the western Pacific Ocean. The Sulu Sea to the southwest lies
between the country and the island of Borneo, and to the south the Celebes Sea
separated it from other islands of Indonesia. It is bounded on the east by the Philippine
Sea. Its location on the pacific ring of fire and its tropical climate make the Philippines
prone to earth quakes and typhoons but have also endowed the country with natural
resources and made it one of the richest areas of biodiversity in the world.

III. CULTURAL ICONS

The Greek root of the word icon is eikon, which means image. Images,
concrete and immediately identifiable, are mans external expressions of internal beliefs,
aspirations and values. While icons are symbols and mind works, they naturally tie in
with myths, legends, and religious idols so long as they move more men into
recognizing and somehow, venerating these images for whatever ideas or thoughts they
stand for.

5
Maria David. Early Philippine Literature. Philippines, Pasig City: Anvil Publishing Inc., 2006.
Better still, the cultural icons that have shaped them in the past may not
necessarily be the only determining factors since the Filipino has this innate tendency to
innovate or to modify, not merely on whim but more importantly, to blend and harmonize
Filipino people.

A. Material Objects

Tinikling. Among the Philippine dancers presented to both local and
foreign audiences which have received the widest and most enthusiastic
accolade is the tinikling. In fact, it was the only dance performed by our very
own bayanihan dance company (now bayanihan phil.) which was performed in
the h.s. which appeared on ed Sullivans famous T.V. show to the delight of
million viewers. It is also the favorite dance in the Visayan Islands, particularly
in Leyte, where it usually climates the rice planting festival. The tinikling is the
dramatic show, stopping finale of the dance repertoire. Named after the
tinikling bird or rail (rallies) because the dance imitates the movement of this
bird, the dance calls for at least one pair of dancers, male or female, and a
second couple to handle a pair of wooden or bamboo poles.

Mango. A heat-shaped, smooth skinned tropical fruit that takes in the
golden yellow of the sun is none other than the mango or its scientific name
magniferaindica. Some have regarded the mango as the king of fruits or
apple of the tropics. Grown in a countries with temperate climate just like
Philippines. The Philippine mango is the best tasting of them all. One must
taste it to believe this honor accorded to it. And it is the supreme pleasure of
the eater who bites into the Philippine mango, sucking and sipping its sweet
juices and succulent flesh; it is the countrys most beloved fruit.

Philippine Eagle. A bird of incredible strength and magnificent beauty
flies the Philippine sky. It has piercing blue, gray eyes, an impressive height of 1
meter or more, and an incredible crest of long, bright feathers, huge highly
arched but unusually narrow bill and extremely powerful le sand feet, this is the
Philippine eagle. In fact, it has been described by the famous aviator, Charles E.
Lindbergh as the airs noble flier. This amazing Philippine eagle was discovered
in Samar by the English naturalist, john whitehead, more than a hundred years
ago and given the generic name, phitecopaga- derived from the Greek words
phitekos (monkey) and phagein(eiter) and the specific name Jefferyi, in honor of
john whites heads father, Jeffrey.

B. Food/Beverages/Drinks

Adobo. The Filipinos national dish is adobo but it is a dish wherein his
culinary soul ha taken a lot of improvisation. This is because adobo is cooked
with some basic ingredients and relished to ones individual taste or whim at the
moment. In addition, it is kept in the palayok (claypot) or in a ceramic container or
in a modern day cooking pan, the better.

Tuba. Incised from the young stalk of a coconut tree, tuba is a sweet sap
which is both a beverage and a source of sugar, as well as an alcohol because it
maybe fermented or distilled. Tuba may also be made from nipa palms which are
inundated during high tide. According to tuba connoisseurs, tuba from nipa palm
is superior to tuba from coconuts. Bahal is tuba which is four days to several
weeks old. If the tuba is several months or so many years old, it is called
bahaling. This is rare and therefore expensive. Most drink bahal, and yes, with
barok on it.

SMB or San Miguel Beer. In addition to creating legend out of its
products, San Miguel Beer is widely perceived as the Filipinos toast to a
common. Comforting bond-SMB or SarapMagingBarkada, as recent San Miguel
Beer commercial crows. San Miguel Beer has woven itself into the culture and
tradition of a people this side of the world. In fact, beer has taken over the soft
drink function because by 1913, San Miguel Beer had captured 88% of the local
market. Writer, former secretary of Eduardo Alejandro Roces, maintains, Beer is
the convivial drink of Filipino. San Miguel Beer, as every day and festive drink
has cut through regional and class borders that makes it a cultural icon par
excellence.

C. Cultural Rituals/Traditions

Harana. Set to the lilting poignant strains of guitar music and emboldened
by a group or barkada singers to convey ones romantic intentions by his
beloveds window, harana (serenade) punctuates the Filipino swains shy but
gentle persuasion. In the rural areas, harana is a tradition looked at sheepishly
but nevertheless honored. Many a great love has actually found fruition because
of this harana but lately, it has acquainted with a new comer or visitor to ones
barrio, or for renewing friendships especially with former barrio mates and friends
on vacation. To break the ice, so to speak, harana fulfill what unspoken desires
cannot verbalize.

Fiestas. If one has to paint fiesta or feast as it is celebrated in a Philippine
town, the canvas might as well be as large as an adults arm can reach; the
colors as fascinating as the rainbow after an afternoon rain and the images. The
images shall be equally amazing because these may appear stunning, albeit,
desperate, leaving only one or two major images that may weld with the viewers
perspective.
What the outsider sees in a Philippine fiesta is actually a Philippine town in
miniature-in a festive, celebratory mood. One might wonder the number of
occasions a down turns out to feast. Well, there are at least 3- the holy week, the
feast of corpus Christi and the feast in honor of the patron saint of the locality.
This of course, includes all the major church festivities as in Christmas, Easter,
feast of the Santo Nio, all saints day, etc. but with the hundreds of towns or
municipalities there are in the country, the Philippines might as well be called a
fiesta country.

Bayanihan. The word bayanihan, roughly translated in Pilipino, means of
the town, from the word bayan or town. It eloquently depicts what the best of the
Filipino exemplifier helping together, working to a common goal without
compensation. What the painter Botong V. Francisco has immortalized is the
typical kind-hearted Filipino who does or renders service pro-lonomo. A cry for
help does not go unheeded, whether it be in constructing or relocating a
neighbors house, in transporting a physically disabled from one side of the river
to the other, in helping deliver a baby if the midwife is not around, or the
babysitter of a neighbors child, or any other job just to be able to help.

D. Personalities

1. World Class Filipinos

If ever a person were born to entertain, it should be the Filipinos. It is our
pride that we had molded world class entertainer that gives honor and bring
victory to our country, that makes Philippines not just an ordinary country with
ordinary people living harmoniously but, it had proved that Philippines is really
one of its kind in the entire Asia. Perhaps the said world class entertainers are
following: Manny pacman Pacquiao, a professional boxer and a politician, Lea
Salonga, aFilipina singer and actress, Arnel Pineda, journeys lead vocalist,
CharicePempengco, an internet sensation, Billy Crawford, a man with
unstoppable youthful energy and a lot more.

2. Famous Filipino Personalities

Filipinos are talented; they are famous in various fields such like singing,
acting, dancing, sports, politics and etc. It could take not just an entire book to be
able to highlight them. In the world of showbizness many performers came out
from their shells and become famous of what they are doing in pursuing their
careers. Filipinos are also famous in the field of arts and they also received
awards in such various filed, which gives the Philippines a worldwide fame.

of places to visit in the Philippines, with unlimited treasures and unforgettable
experiences. The country with over 7,107 islands, offers a long list of exotic
destinations to select from. Each of the places to visit in the Philippines has its
own charm and attractions. Here is an overview of some if the best places to visit
in the Philippines.

7
Alfred Miller Funk and John Rand McNally et. al. GEAP in Social Studies (Manila, Philippines:
Exclusively Published by Encleare Foundation, 2007), 215-222.
Puerto Princesa, Palawan has a lush virgin forest, exotic wildlife,
magnificent marine and terrestrial species, white sand beaches, stunning
shorelines, an endless vista of pure, unsullied beauty; the visitor is pampered by
a combined eco-tourism, adventure, vacation, retreat and personally designed
fulfilling experience. Idyllic, bless by him who knows that divinely beautiful
signifies, Palawan is rightly bruited about as the Philippines secret crown
jewels.

They say Puerto Princesa literally means gate of a princess. At first we were
confused. But when we got there, well, I just couldnt help it but to keep on appreciating
the lime stone cliffs that would make a poet drool and its rugged landscape softened by
mangrove swamps. It would perhaps take a bunch of pages to write journal about the
luring spots of Palawan.

2. Baguio
This summer capital
of the country is also
known as the city of pines,
as there are many pines
grown in the area. You will
surely love the temperature
in this province since most
of the days in here are cool
or cold.

I just wanted to
visit again baguio. Know
why? Just because before,
I always dreamed to travel far from Philippines. But when I stepped my feet on the
ground of baguio, I feel like I was already in the cold countries of Europe. Try it and
youll love it.

3. Bohol- one of the most popular tourist
destinations in the country. It is the home of the
famous chocolate hills and the smallest primate in
the world, the tarsier.

Bohol is just an ordinary place with good people living in there. But you would just
cant resist its hundred hills that looks like chocolate kisses when it turns brown during
summer. And the smallest specie, the tarsier thats just size of my palm. Actually Im
planning to bring my family there some other time.

4. Cebu- it offers tons of superb places from historical land marks, natural
wonders to man-made wonders. Plus, it is also the home of world class beaches, scuba
diving sites and lively festivals in the country.

The images portrayed in that
picture are just leap of taste of the
beauty of my hometown, Cebu. I could
proudly say its purely the wonders of
nature and of course, its folks that
gives beauty and pride in the whole
visayas.

5. boracay- every tourist must have heard or visited this tropical haven in the
center of the archipelago. This island offers blue-clear water, powdery-fined beaches,
and world class resorts, all in every reasonable prices. Famous for both foreigners and

million of great experiences when you try to
spend your vacation in bora.

6. Camiguin Island- affectionately
dubbed by the locals as the Garden of Eden in the Philippines, this pear-shaped island
is located in the southern of the country, providing a healthy blend of wonderful scenery,
sunny days white sandy beaches, and great culinary experiences. This island is also
known for its lanzones a sweet typical fruits.

To anyone who hardly has time to revel in the treasures of the Philippines, why not try
to make an appointment and save your summer here in camiguin? For sure, someones
pain will ease or someones productive life will come to a permanent conclusion.

7. Apo Island- tjis tiny and secluded island off the coast of Negros in central
Philippines is a tourist magnet. It has excellent coral reef formations as well as clean,
white sandy beach. There are only a handful of locals in this island, making it one of the
few virgin territories in this
archipelago.

The magic of Apo Island is not
stale nor predictable but always
new, thats because this work of
nature blends with the tourists
sensibility.
Stunning, magnificent, deceiving. Many times I went back there to experience
the wide expose of infinity that I have been awed, have been moved.

8. Panglao-island- also known as the
little paradise of pure hearts this small
island is part of the province of bohol , a
magnificent tourism destination as well. Just
like any other islands in the Philippines,
panglao offers unrivalled vistas and great
accommodation throughout the year. Since
there are only two seasons in the country,
you can enjoy the sun here for a month
without even a single rain.

Panglao Island, the Philippines little paradise of pure hearts leave one dumb founded
to the point of wonder- the wonder of human spirit. Just spare and take a look at these
spot; who could have thought that a pure Filipino could bring out the best of these
beautyless-island before, the panglao island.
V. CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS

Even before the coming of the Spaniards, the Filipinos had civilization with a unique
culture. Many of the pre-colonial customs and traditions are still operative and intact
among our people in the different parts of the country.

A. Filipino Traits and Values

To describe a typical Filipino is to point out some traits common to the average
Filipino. These common traits characterize the Filipino as a people.

Filipinos are gregarious, friendly and hospitable. They sing and dance even when its
storming, laugh at anything and gave a communal sense of fun. However, some social
characteristics of Filipinos have both pluses and minuses.

1. the Filipino attitude of bahalana or come what may, enables a person to meet
difficulties and shortcomings with resignation by leaving it up to the almighty to sort
things out.

2. the Filipinos maana habit causes delays in many public transactions and even
corporations.

3. thebahalana attitude is the outcome of the maana habit when the tasks are left
undone.

4. some Filipinos do not mostly practice being late or not showing up. There are few
people who are punctual for social meetings.

5. some male Filipinos are product and arrogant that they will not accept losing face,
particularly in the crowd. They dont like the idea of being defeated or embarrassed.

6. the Filipino hiya or shame traits stems from losing amorpropio which is a Spanish
word, meaning pride.

B. Festivals

The introduction of Catholicism by the Spaniards to the Filipinos, hada great impact on
the countrys culture. The celebration of feast and festivals in honor of a patron is an
indication of Spanish assimilation of its culture to the Filipinos. Its great value can be
traced on the religiosity of the Filipino people as well as their gaiety in spirit or nature.

Festivals are huge parts of Filipino culture. Festivals are a grand procession along
the streets.
The festivals here in the Philippines are: January, Santo Nio, FebruaryChinese new
year, march is festival of senakulo April, dincimulag mango festival, on may is the
santacruzan, on June is independence day. There are parades in every town small and
large. This is a great day for all Filipinos, on September is tourism week, on October is
ulong Apo Festival, there are also a lot of festival which are not yet known in our country
which is celebrated by our native fellow Filipinos.

C. Religious Celebrations

Predominantly, Filipinos are Catholics. Although, there exist other religious and sects
such as islam, protestanism, iglesianicristo and others, differences in religious beliefs do
not hinder Filipinos to unite as one people. A belief in one god symbolizes the unity of
the Filipino nation. During religious holidays, Filipinos join hard in hard to celebrate as
one big family.

Here are some religious holidays observed in the Philippines just like Christmas,
feast/festivity, Ramadan, santasena, holy week, epiphany, hari-raya-puasa, Easter
Sunday, santacruzan, day of thanksgiving and a lot more.

D. Ethnic Groups

Pre-spanish life and culture can be traced back among ethnic groups in Luzon,
visayas, Mindanao. They are often referred to as cultural tribes or cultural minorities.

The Philippine islands are inhabited by a number of different ethnic groups. The
majority of the population is composed of ethno-linguistic groups whose languages are
Austronesian (malayo-polynesian) in origin. Many of these people converted to
Christianity, and adopted many foreign elements of culture. These ethnic groups include
the Cebuano, Ilocano, ilonggot, pangasinese, bicolano, kapampangan, tagalog,
waray, blaan, muslims, aetas and so much more. Most Filipinos are part of the
Austronesian group, a group of malayo-polynesian speaking people. Non-malayo
Polynesian ethnic groups form a minority in the Philippine population.

E. Religions, and Religious Denominations in the Philippines.

Filipinos belong to different religions. Religious beliefs help Filipino explain their
natural environment and their biological and spiritual existence as well. Religion also
provides the means to relate to other people, to love ones neighbor due to the love of
god. Ethical values and conduct are developed in each religion which guide everyone to
do what is right. Thus, religion is a binding force for the society as a whole.

Religion in the Philippines are spiritual beliefs held by Philippine citizens. Religion holds
a central place in the life of the majority of Filipinos including catholics, muslims,
Buddhists, protestants, and animists. Religious associations are part of the system of
kinship ties, patron client bonds and other linkages outside the nuclear family.

F. Asian, Spanish, and American Influence in the Philippines

The hindu, chinese, Japanese, arab, Spaniards and americans are foreigners who
made great contributions and enriched our culture as Filipino people. They came here in
the Philippines as merchants, missionaries, and colonizers. These varied influences
have either negative or positive effect on us. Nevertheless, these have shaped our
personality and our view towards, work, development and life in entirely.

G. National Holidays

There are yearly celebrations in the Philippines declared as public or national
holidays. These are national observances aimed at uniting each and every Filipino.
During a national holiday, there are no classes and work both public and private
sectors. This gives an opportunity for everyone to join the whole nation in its celebration
of the holiday.

IV. CONCLUSION

Philippines referred to as the pearl of the orient, has been known for its irresistible
beauty. Philippines is categorized as one of the Asias richest country because it
produces all kinds of natural resources like mines and gold, fruit bearing trees, rich
soils, good seasonal climate and balance temperature, and of course, the exotic sea
foods.

Philippines is known as the pearl of the orient because of its natural beauty that
stands out from any other neighboring country in the whole east asia and make
Philippines the one of a kind.

Philippines had already made a record in the world history and was never left
behind. It had marked not only in the heart of Filipinos but also perhaps, to the foreign
countries who had become a part of the Philippine histoy.

The Philippines is located in Southeast Asia. Its strategic location has affected the
development of Philippine history and has enabled the Philippines to play a major role in
Southeast Asian affair. Being an archipelago, the Philippines is a strong advocate of the
archipelago doctrine. It has led the developing countries in invoking the concepts of
insular and territorial shelves as one of the bases for defining the national territory.

On the other hand, in Philippine human society, the wealthy, the mighty and the
eminent are on top; the poor and the weak are below. People are fond of adverting to
lifes wheel of fortune by saying that sometimes, youre up, sometime youre down. This
rotary phenomenon may occur in the case of individuals but not of whole masses: of
Filipinos, since the lower classes are always down and the upper classes are always
up.

There is so many history and backgrounds to write about the Philippines. Yet, to
come up with good summary, we could still say that the worlds most atoning, great and
wonderful scenic spots and other tourist worlds attraction. Others than that, despite of
some negativities, we Filipinos ourselves are the wealth of our country for being very
hospitable, brave and always optimistic.
