Cape

The cape utilizes the Double Knitting technique. Both yarns should be held double-
stranded, pulling from both ends of both skeins (4 strands total). Cast on with the
colors indicated in instructions. On the first round, knit color A and purl color B
alternately. On the opposite side, purl color A and knit color B alternately. When
knitting, both strands should be held in back and when purling, both strands should
be held in front. Repeat as instructions indicate. (If you cast on 30 stitches, you will
end up working 60 stitches knitting one color and purling the other).

Pulling strands from both ends of (FC) and (AC), CO 30 stitches.

move next stitch (FC) to cable needle and hold in front, M1R(AC), move cable needle
stitch back to right needle, *K1(FC), P1(AC), repeat from * 7 times, M1L(FC), move

cable needle and hold in front, M1R(AC), Move cable needle stitch back to right
needle, *K1(FC), P1(AC), repeat from * 8 times {46}.

Rounds 18 and 20: K1(AC), P1(FC), repeat from * to end. Round 19: K1(FC), P1(AC),
repeat from * to end. Transfer 46(FC) sts to one needle and 46(AC) sts to another
needle. Using Kitchener stitch and (AC) yarn, graft top edge closed.

To achieve Kitchener stitch, hold the needles parallel, with points facing in the same
direction. Insert tapestry needle into first stitch on needle closest to you as if to purl
and pull yarn through, leaving stitch on needle. Insert needle into first stitch on back
needle as if to knit and pull yarn through, leaving stitch on needle. *

Insert needle into first stitch as if to knit and pull yarn through, slipping stitch off
needle. Insert needle into next stitch on front needle as if to purl, but leave stitch on
needle. Pull yarn through. Insert needle into first stitch on back needle as if to purl
and pull yarn through, slipping stitch off needle. Insert needle into next stitch on
back needle as if to knit, but leave stitch on needle. Pull yarn through. Continue from
* to end of row. Tighten stitches as you go.

Seam sides using yarn and Mattress stitch. To achieve Mattress stitch, match two
edges together. Pull stitches along edge to separate from the stitches next to it,
revealing the horizontal bar that runs between stitches. Insert tapestry needle
under that bar and pull yarn gently through. Insert the needle under the parallel bar
on opposite piece and pull yarn gently through. Work back and forth from one side
to the other, pulling yarn gently as you go.

Felting & Assembly

Place bowl and collar in a pillowcase and felt in top loading washing machine with
detergent and the first cycle of a hot wash. Repeat if necessary, but check shape
every few minutes. Or felt by hand: Fill a bucket with hot water and 1 cup baking
soda and agitate. Roll into separate towels and squeeze out excess water. Place
forming bowl inside knit bowl and leave for 2 to 3 days. Wrap collar around the back
of the bowl with a thick ribbon or a folded hand towel to hold collar to bowl, leaving
the top free. Fold top down to create collar shape.

When dried to form, use yarn and tapestry needle to sew collar to bowl. Theres no
need to sew all the way around; you can just tack collar to bowl every few inches or
so. About 1inch from base, tack collar to bowl to keep it from flopping over.
