We borrow our
October worship
series title from the
Childrens Defense
Fund, a group that
advocates for the
needs and concerns of children. As
Christians, we believe it is a significant
part of our call to care for the most vul-
nerable among us. But what exactly
does that look like? We will together
examine our call to cherish and protect
each child, for as the song goes, they
are precious in his sight.
As well, October 19
th
will be our annual
Childrens Sabbath Sunday, when our
children lend their voices to our wor-
ship with a significant leadership role.
October 12: A Voice for the Voiceless
(Exodus 32.1-14)
October 19: Childrens Sabbath
(Matthew 19.13-15)
October 26: Love Your Neighbor as
Yourself, No Matter How Short They
Are. (Matthew 22.34-46)

American Baptist Churches of the
Central Region - Annual Gathering
Oct. 17 & 18
(www.abccr.org)
It is not too late to register for the ABCCR Annual
Gathering at Cross Wind Conference Center, Oct. 17-
18, 2014. This years guest speakers will include Dr. Jeff
Johnson, National Director of Evangelism and New
Church Planting, and Missionary Tom Myers from Bul-
garia. Back by popular demand are a number of invig-
orating seminars being held Friday, 9:00-11:45
a.m. New this year will be a host of Missional Conver-
sations on Friday evening, each designed to generate
ideas to aid a congregation in its attempt to be more of
an influence within the community. Registration mate-
rials and a complete list of available seminars and mis-
sional conversation topics are available on the Region
website at www.abccr.org

First Baptist Needs You to Lead!
FBC will be electing a slate of officers at the 2015 Annual Business Gathering in January. As the Nominating Committee
begins the process of filling these elected positions, we invite you to pray for the committee and the current leadership as
we prepare for 2015. We have eight Ministries at FBC: Deacons, Evangelism, Facilities, Finance, Missions, Membership,
Spiritual Formation, and Worship. For each of these Ministries, we elect a Chair, a Vice-Chair, and a Steward (or liaison to
the Spiritual Leadership Team.) In addition, there are four officers of the church who are a part of the Spiritual Leader-
ship Team: Moderator, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, and Clerk. And there are two additional standing committees with
elected leadership: Nominating and Staff Relations. Of course, many of these positions have been filled for the coming
year, but we would invite you to read through this list of Ministries and let us know if you have an interest in serving in an
elected or volunteer capacity in the upcoming year. And again, please pray for the Nominating committee and our church
leadership as we together ask where God is leading us this year and in the years ahead. Please contact Pastor Matt, Dawn
Trent, or Sally Heilman with any interests or questions you might have.
~Nominating Committee, Sally Heilman, Chair
FBC Lawrence has begun a new
process that I am excited to be a
part of. As the Adult Spiritual For-
mation Adjunct, I am a part of a
four-person team to assist the
church in living out its spiritual life
in healthy, growing ways.
Joe Kutter, Interim Associate Pas-
tor, Cody Knapik, CBTS Intern of
Youth Spiritual Formation, a soon-
to-be-decided Childrens Spiritual Formation staff per-
son, and I make up a team that will be with you as you
live out your vision. To me, this is not only exciting
work, but also the way that churches will be able to
continue to do ministry in the future, with teams to lead
in ministry.
So, thank you for the opportunity to take part in work
that I believe is vital to the continued life of Gods
church. Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote a book entitled Life
Together. That is what we are aboutliving together in
community, with the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
I come to this position after 17 years of pastoral leader-
ship (6 years at Old Manor Baptist Church, Wichita, and
11 years at FBC Winfield) and more than 30 years of
youth ministry, almost five of which was on staff at
FBC Olathe; the rest were volunteer years.
I have two children. I live with Joanna, who is pastor at
Peace Mennonite Church here in Lawrence, and is mar-
ried to Ryan (who teaches Special Education at
Schwegler Elementary), and has 3 children; Matt and his
family live in Topeka and he is a stay-at-home dad to
his two sons, and is married to Jenn (who is a family
physician). ~Rev. Cheryl Harader

FBC Book Club
The October selection is Poem on the
Range by Caryn Miriam Goldberg. This
book is based on the time that the au-
thor spent as the Kansas Poet Laureate.
It includes some of her poems and mus-
ings of the various parts of the state that
she visited. Unfortunately it is not avail-
able at the Lawrence library but copies
are available at the Raven Bookstore and
on-line for around $10.00. The meeting will be held on
Oct. 13 at 7:00 pm at the Arnoldss home, 1728 Brandon
Wood Dr.
The First Baptist Book club reads a wide variety of works
including fiction, non-fiction, biographies, memoirs, and
poetry. Members suggest the books to be read. If you
