Lesson Plan 1

Name: Terrance Hill
Teacher: Mr. Thole
Subject: Reading

Opening: Begin by finding out what the students interests are. Because this is our first meeting I
would like to learn a little about the background of the student. Also, figure out if there are any
topics he likes to read and any topics he does not like to read. I will show the student then where
the books he is interested in can be found in the library. I will also give him a reading attitude test to
see what he thinks about reading.

Lesson: Because this is our first day, I am going to read to him out of one of the books I have
provided or a book we select together in the school library. I am going to read a large passage of the
book to him and then I will have him read a small portion of the book for me. I am going to use this
to assess where his reading level is at and determine what level of books should be used for the
next time we meet.

Goals: Much of the activity in this meeting will focus on getting him to enjoy reading at some level. I
want him to be excited to read with me every week as opposed to dreading it.

Lesson Plan 2

Name: Terrance Hill
Teacher: Mr. Thole
Subject: Reading

Opening: We will begin the lesson by discussing what book Terrance would like to read for the
next couple of weeks. I have found three books that should fit his interests base on what he told me
last week.

Lesson: The books I selected last week had some words that were a little advanced for Terrance
but he did seem to be interested in them. I have picked out a graphic novel that I believe is within
Terrances reading ability. I want to work with him on using clues to figure out words he doesnt
know and their meaning. I will also have Terrance do more of the reading than he did last time. Last
week I read to him while he followed along. This week I want him to do pretty much all of the
reading.

Goals: The goal for the next two weeks is to have Terrance read the book aloud to me and be able to
answer questions about it.

Lesson Plan 3

Name: Terrance Hill
Teacher: Mr. Thole
Subject: Reading

Opening: After assessing Terrances reading for the last couple weeks, I have picked out a book
from the H reading level as determined by the schools system. The book is called educating Arthur.

Lesson: This book is in Terrances reading level. I will have him read the entire book for me. As he
reads, I will be counting the number of words that he misses on each page. I will also be keeping
track of exactly which words he misses to see if there is a pattern in which words he struggles with.
I will also be asking him comprehension questions about the book. From previous weeks, Terrance
does not seem to struggle with the comprehension of a book even is his reading not as smooth as it
should be

Goals: I would like to determine if there is a pattern to the words that Terrance misses when he
reads. If there is than I will bring in things to help him with those words. I would also like to
continue working with him on taking clues from the text to figure out words that he doesnt know.

Reflection:
Terrance did a good job of reading the books I provided him. I think the books I selected were more
appropriate for his level. I marked the ones that he missed and then I had him write the words out.
Then I had him re read the passage of the word that he missed. This seemed to really help his
accuracy on words. He does a good job at using clues from the text to get hints on words he doesnt
know. Terrance just needs more practice to develop his vocabulary and improve his fluency. Also,
he is able to answer any comprehension question I have about the text. Thus, despite being a
choppy and slow reader, he is understanding the text.

Lesson Plan 4

Name: Terrance Hill
Teacher: Mr. Thole
Subject: Reading

Opening: I will open this lesson by having Terrance read a passage and answer some questions
about the reading. Up until this point I have done some informal assessment regarding Terrances
comprehension but I am going to do a more formal assessment.

Lesson: I have picked out some books from the G, H, and I reading levels from the reading room. I
believe that Terrance needs to continue to practice to improve his fluency. He seems enthusiastic
about reading. He struggles with words he doesnt recognize but typically gets them after one or
two misses. I think he would greatly benefit from an expanded vocabulary and better word
recognition.

Goals: For this lesson, I would like Terrance to get through the level H books and average less than
1 missed word per page. He was very close to doing this last week but needed help getting through
the longer words. I have also noticed that Terrance does not read as well after a long period of
sitting. I will work on chunking the activity.

Reflection:
Terrance did a very good job of understanding and comprehending the reading passage. I am very
surprised at how well his comprehension is and how well he answers questions related to the
passage. We went back over words that he missed when he was reading to me. I had him rewrite
the word that he missed, make sure he understood it, and then he re-read the passage. I would like
to work with him on fluency and his vocabulary. I will make flash cards of sight words for next time.
I will also try to find worksheets that will benefit his vocabulary.

Lesson Plan 5

Name: Terrance Hill
Teacher: Mr. Thole
Subject: Reading

Opening: I will open this lesson by having Terrance read a passage while I follow along and make
notes at what words he misses. He will be reading a passage that is considered at reading level for a
second grader.

Lesson: Terrance seems to enjoy reading the books from the book inventory at the school. I will
continue having him practice reading to me and I will also demonstrate god reading skills to him.
He also really enjoys writing on the white boards. I am going to have him write full sentences on the
white boards now as opposed to just words. I have learned more about the writing to read method
of teaching comprehension and I think it can really benefit Terrance.

Goals: Terrance is very difficult to set goals for because he comprehends material at grade level and
enjoys reading. He just reads slowly at times. It seems to me that he just needs more practice. If he
gains familiarity with more words and expands his vocabulary, he will become a more fluent
reader.

Reflection:
Terrance read well during the reading record. He only missed a couple words completely. He did a
lot of self correcting. I may do the running record again with him at a higher level. The one that I
had was ment for somebody in second grade and he seemed to do very well with it. We then read
together and I tried to demonstrate how good reading technique. He requested that we get two
copies of the book so we can read together instead of looking off the same book. Terrance seems to
be improving and missing less words. I may try higher level books as we progress.

Lesson Plan 6

Name: Terrance Hill
Teacher: Mr. Thole
Subject: Reading

Opening: I have made some flash cards for today and would like Terrance to work on his sight
words. I believe this will help with his fluency as well as provide insight to deciphering the
pronunciation of other words.

Lesson: Terrance continues to show enjoyment in reading books from the reading inventory at the
school. I have been having him read level H books but I am going to move to level I books because
he does not seem to struggle as much as he was with the level H books. Moving to level I does not
result in a huge jump in reading level and this will broaden our selection of books if nothing else.

Goals: Terrance will continue to work on his fluency. He seems to be making improvements in that
area. I also have noticed over the last few weeks that he reads very well during the beginning of our
lesson but starts to struggle about 20 minutes in. I had him take a break about half way through the
lesson last week and it really seemed to help with his fluency and ability to grasp new concepts.

Reflection:
Terrance did an outstanding job with the flash cards. He went through without missing any of the
cards. They are considered the Dolch second grade level sight words. He also did well with the I
level books. The books had slightly longer paragraphs. I think I will continue with this level of book.
He continues to do well with new challenges but we need to work on his fluency.

Lesson Plan 7

Name: Terrance Hill
Teacher: Mr. Thole
Subject: Reading

Opening: The flash cards prior to reading seemed to really get his brain going. I am going to print
some more flash cards and have him do that as a warm-up activity for the lesson. I will continue
with sight words as this seemed to help what he struggles most with, fluency.

Lesson: I think Terrance is ready to read books at the I level. This time however, I will read a
passage first, then we will read the passage together, then Terrance will read the passage aloud to
me. I want to do this because I think Terrance needs to hear good reading more than he is already.
This strategy will allow Terrance to hear good reading, and then practice while hearing what he
should be saying.

Goals: I would like Terrance to read the passages more fluently than he has been. With his fluency
improving, he should be able to read higher level books and also improve his comprehension. This
method of teaching Terrance should also help him decipher word he doesnt know.

Reflection:
It seemed to help Terrance a lot to have him read after I had read a passage. I had him read some
books today that were a little bit harder than what we have been reading. He was able to get
through a lot of the words on his own. The more complicated words he struggled with but it was
very helpful for me to demonstrate good reading prior to him starting for the day. We also began
reading a chapter book that he really wants to read. This is a more difficult book than he is probably
capable of and thus I will be reading it to him for the last 10 minutes every session.

Lesson Plan 8

Name: Terrance Hill
Teacher: Mr. Thole
Subject: Reading

Opening: Terrance will be doing a reading record that I will record to begin this lesson. The
passage is considered to be at the second grade level. He did fairly wel with the last one and I
believe he should do well with this one.

Lesson: Terrance and I will continue to read through books. He indicated that he would like to read
a chapter book last time so I have begun searching for chapter books that he is capable of reading.
We will try to work through books that are at the J and K level as suggested. His fluency does seem
to be improving and I am figuring out what works well for his lessons.

Goals: I would like to see Terrance get through grade level books by the end of my time working
with him. Obviously he is not going to be a perfect reader at that point, but he is showing a lot of
improvement in many aspects of reading. It would be very good for his confidence to know that he
is reading at the appropriate grade level and I will feel very accomplished as well!

Reflection:
Terrance read well during the reading record. He missed more words during this one than he did
when I did a previous running record with him. We then read level J books, he did pretty well with
these but I did notice a few more missed words than usual. I will continue to have him read at this
level until he shows more improvement .

Lesson Plan 9

Name: Terrance Hill
Teacher: Mr. Thole
Subject: Reading

Opening: We will start off this lesson by practicing with a few sight words flash cards again. It
seems to help Terrance with his fluency when we have a simple warm up activity to begin the day.

Lesson: We will then work through some worksheets that I have for Terrance. The work sheets are
to help Terrance with his reading comprehension and his ability to make connections while
reading. After we complete the worksheets, we are going to continue to read books at the j and k
level. Terrance was ok with doing this last week and was still able to comprehend the stories,
despite missing a few more words than normal.

Goals: I am still seeing improvement in Terrances reading. I believe it has been very helpful to have
him simply practice reading and having him listen to good reading from me. I would like to see him
reach the level l books before my tutoring sessions with him are complete. I was also informed by
his mother that his interest in reading has risen since he started working with me. This is very
encouraging for his future as he may be able to catch up to a more appropriate reading level for
him.

Reflection:
Terrance worked through the second grade flash cards well. This also seemed to help him as we
went through the other reading activities. He did well on the work sheets too. His comprehension of
material is strong so long as he can understand the words he is reading. His improvement is
encouraging and with a regular tutor, Terrance could catch up to grade level reading.

Lesson Plan 10

Name: Terrance Hill
Teacher: Mr. Thole
Subject: Reading

Opening: Today we will start the lesson by doing a warm up activity on the ipad. Terrance seems to
really enjoy this and I have found a few reading apps that are appropriate for his level. The apps
also have books on them and Terrance can click on a word if he doesnt know it. I dont like to use
this the entire time because Terrance sometimes clicks on the word too quickly if he doesnt know
it. I want him to think a little bit more like he does when he is reading a paper book.

Lesson: After our activity with the ipad, Terrance is going to continue to read books at the J, K, and
even L level. He struggles with some of these books but has done well with others. He seems to be
more excited when he is reading the higher level books. He is very aware of his reading level and
wants to believe he is a good reader. I will also continue to demonstrate good reading to him when
he needs a break and at the end of our lessons.

Goals: I would like to continue to perpetuate the idea in Terrances mind that he is a good reader. I
believe he can be if he continues to work at it. I have tried being even more positive lately and this
seems to help him stay on task more.

Reflection:
Terrance was very talkative and difficult to get on task today. I believe this fact exaggerated the fact
that he was not able to get through the books I selected for him. He has done well with level J books,
but when I tried to push him to the level k books this week, he was very much in the frustration
level. As next week is our last week together, I will probably only go to level j books if we read
together.
