Greetings all, What is in a name . . . Shakespeare wrote that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Well, that is very appropriate in that we are changing the name of our monthly publication from UOAConnection to Ostomy Canada Connects. It will still be as sweet as you remember, just a new name to coincide with our name change to Ostomy Canada Society. Speaking of names, Industry Canada rejected our application for a change to our corporate name because the French version we originally proposed (L'Association Canadienne des Personnes Stomises) was not a good translation of Ostomy Cana- da Society. We have resubmitted our application under a different name - Socit Canadienne des Personnes Stomises. Our friends in Quebec have approved this change and hopefully Industry Canada will as well. The name of our youth camp is changing from UOAC Ostomy Youth Camp to Ostomy Canada Youth Camp. To go along with the new name, we are designing a new brochure. Take a Look! UOAC has a new updated website! Check out the information sec- tion for up-to-date information from dieticians, life coaches, pharmacists and peo- ple with an ostomy. You can write in with your questions and our panel of experts will answer within 5-7 days. Want to promote your chapter meetings? Your ostomy days? Send your infor- mation to web@ostomycanada.ca and we will put it on our website under the events tab. Our website is viewed by over 15,000 people per month! Our Facebook group has passed 600 members! The 2 nd Annual Canada Ostomy Day was held on October 4, 2014. Seven chap- ters across Canada joined in the Stoma Stroll Awareness Walk: Regina (first year), Hamilton (first year), Saskatoon (first year), Halifax, Calgary, Niagara and Moncton. As well, we continued with the Virtual Walk. In conjunction with Canada Ostomy Day, Ostomy Toronto arranged for the lighting of the CN Tower to promote Cana- da Ostomy Day! Thank you, Ostomy Toronto! Our fund-raising and awareness OSTOMY CANADA CONNECTS continues until the year end. So visit www.stomastroll.ca to donate and to watch our progress to see if we reach our goal of $60,000. The board of directors will continue to hold monthly online meetings (usually a Saturday morning). Any chapter president that is interested in sitting in as an observer is welcome. Please send an email to the office or to myself to get an invitation. Our next online meeting is Saturday October 18. A great many chapters are doing fund-raising to support sending youth to Ostomy Canada Youth Camp. Jim Fitzgerald and Jason Boyd embarked on a journey called GI J's - No Guts No Glory 2 guys 2 ostomies 130 km race by paddling a canoe for 130 km on September 13. Here is an update from Jason and Jim: Okay, a little sad news from the GI J's. We had to leave the race early. We got stuck in a brutal downpour at our first portage and muscle fa- tigue set in and muscles were seized up. We couldn't continue. We made every effort and we are forever grateful to all our supporters. Thank you guys. It's not over yet. The GI J's will be back!! And stronger than ever before. When we find the next extreme event we will participate in we will let you all know. Thanks to the generosity of all our donors and sponsors we have raised close to $11,000 so far and fundraising is still open. Thank you to each and every one of you that reached down so deep and helped make the lives of the great kids at the Ostomy Canada Youth Camp at the Easter Seals Camp Horizon that much better. We are proud of each and every one of you. UOAC has been involved in their fund-raising activities and the fund-raising webpage at: http://ostomycanada.akaraisin.com/nogutsnoglory will be kept open until the end of the year. The Bursary Committee has set the deadline for applications: November 1, 2014. There are five $1000 bursa- ries available. There are two different types: Ostomates who are attending post-secondary education courses and Registered Nurses who are attending courses to become an ET. Help spread the word about these two great new programs! Criteria and application forms are available on our website. On September 27, I hosted a GoToMeeting with several chapter presidents from the provinces of Newfound- land and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Also in attendance was Roger Ivol, the COSS adminis- trator. A great many things were discussed during this one hour session. Hopefully it will be a regular event. Although there have been three chapters over the past year that have ceased opera- tions, many of their members have not left UOAC. Some members joined other chapters; one support group reorganized to become a satellite of another chapter; and the members of a satellite are in the process of forming an independent chap- ter. This is a cause for celebration. Here are the details. With the disbanding of the Kawartha chapter in Ontario late last year, the presi- dent of the Oshawa & District Ostomy Association, Joy Baetz, RNET, invited the members to join Oshawa. Many have done so. The Central Vancouver Island chapter ceased operations in May of this year. This chapter had two satellites, Comox Valley and Campbell River. The president of the Vancouver Ostomy Association, Debra Rooney, sent a letter of invitation to the members, base chapter and the satellite members, to join Vancouver. Many have decided to join. In September, the Comox satellite filed papers to officially re-organize and re-structure as a satellite of Vancouver. Perhaps the Campbell River group may do the same. And the Barrie Ostomy group, a satellite of Ostomy Toronto, has decided to be- come a chapter. The relationship with Ostomy Toronto which has lasted for two years, will end amicably. The members have taken a bold step and are hopeful to increase their membership from large outlying communities. When chapters or satellites get into difficulty - sometimes there are no solutions from within - their neighbouring chapters will hear the call for help and come to their aid. And so it is with two of the above support groups. If a chapter is having a problem, the chapter president should contact the Chapter Outreach Support Ser- vices Administrator as soon as possible to help prevent a collapse of the group. There are solutions to almost every problem. What is needed is a willingness to change or try something new.
UOAC Visiting Program update A Visitor Training session was held at the Conference in St. Johns, this past Au- gust. There were 26 people who had signed up for the visitor training refresher course. As it turned out, some of the people who registered for the course were first-timers, meaning that the session had to be complete rather than abridged. But how can you present a five hour course when you only have three hours avail- able? You condense it. We knew it wouldnt be easy, but with some creative condensing we were able to cover all the important elements. Fortunately, not everyone attended the training which gave us some breathing room. The final total was 11 candidates, some of whom attended the training for the first time, two observers, and four COSS personnel as instructors. (Continued on page 5) Page 4 Ostomy Canada Connects If your chapter is planning to conduct a Visitor Training course in the near future, contact your COSS Co- ordinator or Administrator. They may be able to offer support with sample agendas , course materials and suggestions for a first-rate presentation. You can find out who your Co-ordinator is for your area by contact- ing the UOAC office. On September 13, a Visitor Training session was hosted by the Moncton chapter. Judy Steeves, Lifetime Vis- itor, Roger Ivol, COSS Administrator and Joan Peddle, RNET, conducted the training in which 11 new visi- tors were certified. We thank all chapters who have held Visitor Training courses this year and congratulate every newly-certified and re-certified visitor on their success. Roger Ivol, COSS Administrator

Did you know that our website www.ostomycanada.ca had over a half million hits last year? A lot of the visi- tors visited the website to look for a support group in their area. Therefore, it is important that this information be kept up to date! Make sure when sending the information in to the UOAC office that the chapters contact information is current - phone number, email contact, newsletter availability, website, annual dues, meeting dates and times. Visit our chapters page on our website at http://www.ostomycanada.ca/chapters and let the UOAC office know via email if any of the information needs to be updated. Weve had at least one chapter past president contact the office to tell us that the website still included their phone number instead of the cur- rent president. Please check your chapters listing to make sure the updates have been done correctly!

FROM THE EDITOR
EDITORS MESSAGE Today is October 8 and Im about eight days late. Thank God I took my pill, eh? I should be OK but IF IVE BE- COME PREGNANT, at my age and gender, Im sure to make the cover of People Magazine and make tons of money of which Id give a generous portion to Ostomy Canada, of course. How did I get to this digression? Oh, yeah!! Im late --- filing my piece for the Connection, which might be now Ostomy Canada Connects, a very catchy title for this publication. The name, either now or in the very near future, indicates that the national organization wants to, and must, con- nect with each and every member of Ostomy Canada. I know this monthly epistle arrives at the desktop or mailbox of chapter presidents, secretaries, and newsletter editors but there are so many others in the individual chapters who would benefit from various articles, information bits and national highlights that are printed in it. You can use any or all (that might be a bit much) of OC Connects in your chapter newsletter to spread the word of what national is doing to benefit all of us. Speaking of national activities, Stoma Stroll just concluded and, if Halifax was any example, created tremendous awareness for ostomies and ostomates. In Halifax, there was media coverage prior to the Stroll through the Halifax Public Gardens, one of the citys proudest tourist attractions and most beautiful sites. To see more than 40 people waving banners, wearing Stoma Stroll t-shirts, laughing, enjoying themselves, talking with curious passers-by, even greeting a wedding party with bride and groom in their finery, was quite uplifting. The Halifax stroll was led by a member of the RCMP in his scarlets, who happened to be related to the Stroll chair, and was in town on family business. He willingly donned his dress outfit and created even more awareness for the group. Of course, raising funds was another impetus for the Stoma Stroll and Halifax collected over $2,000. Im sure oth- er chapters across the country well exceeded that total and congrats on your achievement. To all of you who participated, good for you and thank you. And speaking of thanks, Thanksgiving Day is but five days away from when Im writing this little gem. Lets all give thanks that were here to celebrate, in most cases because of our Ostomy surgery. Were thankful that people in Ostomy Canada and our local chapters provide support for those dark days, few and far between, I hope, when we fret about our situation. Were thankful that we are positive enough to help others through their transition from what we perceived as nor- mal to our new normal . Were thankful that todays appliances give us comfort and ease, compared to early ostomates who suffered terri- bly with bare-bones equipment. And Im thankful I took my pill today and am no longer late --- with this message. Page 10 Ostomy Canada Connects Jokes for Today This is the story of four people named Everybody, Somebody, An- ybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and everybody was asked to do it. Anybody could have done it, but No- body did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Every- bodys job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldnt do it. Consequently, it wound up that Nobody told Anybody, so Everybody blamed Somebody.
I went into my proctologists office for my first rectal exam. His new nurse took me to an examining room and told me to get un- dressed and have a seat until the doctor could see me. She said that he would only be a few minutes. After putting on the gown that she gave me I sat down. While waiting I observed that there were three items on the stand next to the exam table. A tube of K-Y jelly; a rubber glove; and a beer. When the doctor finally came I said, Look Doc, Im a little confused. This is my first exam, I know what the K-Y is for, and I know what the glove is for, but can you tell me what the BEER is for.? At that time the doctor became no- ticeably outraged and stormed over to the door. The doctor flung the door open and yelled to his nurse..Darn it Helen I said Butt Light.
