Should you be elected, what are three specific areas you'd like to change, address, improve or
further research and how specifically would you go about it?

Upon my election in 2010 to the County Council, my initial priorities were Ethics, Transparency
and Accountability. I am pleased to report significant results were achieved through legislation
and implementation. First, I authored legislation that established the most comprehensive Ethics
Ordinance in the State of Ohio. Second, I authored the ordinance creating the first county based
Agency of the Inspector General in the state. Finally, I authored legislation to sustain fiscal
integrity by establishing minimum balances in our General and Health and Human Services rainy
day fund accounts.

If re-elected I want to build on these priorities establishing these second term priorities:

1. Economic Development As a member of the Councils Economic Development
Committee my priority is to ensure that we promote our core industries of medical,
manufacturing and the service sector (banking and technology) while working to
expand the emerging sectors of energy and the general entrepreneurial
environment. This is made possible the Countys foundation of sound practices
designed to exploit the adaptable and productive physical and human resources of
Northeast Ohio. My experience as an both an entrepreneur and elected official can
be useful in fostering the partnerships with federal, state, adjoining counties and
municipalities needed to stimulate growth.

2. Collaboration Voluntary collaboration is the fuel needed to energize our area. As
the Chair of the Council Committee charged with Collaboration, it has been my
pleasure to work with the leaders within my district, plus the City of Lakewood who
have been using a collaborative model called a Council of Government (COG) for
over 40 years. This COG is the model for collaboration and should serve as an
example of communities working together for the betterment of their residents.
It is my belief that we have just begun to scratch the surface on providing an
environment of voluntary collaboration. Additionally, it is my belief that the county
sits in the prime position to foster voluntary collaboration and as Chair, I would
continue and promote more collaboration than the county is currently offering. A
key step is to remedy the current deficiency in the county focus by filling a vacancy
in the Director of Collaboration position. It is my opinion that this area of county
government has the ability to be the most impactful function of the new county
government.

3. Finances and Financial Integrity I have been and will continue to be very strong
advocate and fiscal hawk to ensure the most effective use of tax payer dollars
this is a top priority of mine. I currently serve on the Finance and Budget
Committee and I have sponsored a number of pieces of legislation focused on
preserving the financial integrity of the county as well as establishing protocols for
ensuring accountability when public funds are being appropriated.
It is important to note that continued diligent review of the countys financial status
and its ability to meet future potential obligations as it relates to meeting its core
objectives in the areas of Health and Human Services, Economic Development,
Justice Services, Public Safety and general operations.

Whether for past accomplishments or future goals, why should voters elect you?

Citizens must have confidence in their government for it to be effective. As the incumbent, it is
my desire to continue to reform and shape the County government into an ethical, transparent,
responsive, service driven organization. Since my election, I have applied an engaged leadership
style, meeting with constituents (I have held 26 in-district town hall meetings) and county
employees to better understand problems and needs. Additionally, I have sponsored and helped
enact legislation focused on enhancing public safety, justice affairs, health and human services,
public works and delivery of administrative services.

Four years ago, when I originally sought this office, it was my belief then, as it is now, that
having not only experience but relevant experience is critical as we formed this new
government. I am fortunate to have served on the inaugural councils of two new forms of
municipal and county government. In 2005, I was elected to serve on the city council to the first
new city in the state of Georgia in nearly 50 years. That experience has proven to be beneficial as
we moved forward in Cuyahoga County.

Now, the county is in need of elected officials who understand the full scope of this new
government as well as those who can bring a sound professional background in financial
management, system design and achievement. The true heavy lifting of governance is in front
of us. During the first term, many of the early reforms were either presented by the various
transition advisory committees or through best practice applications employed in this new
structure. Having been engaged in every decision of this new government, having knowledge
and understanding of our unique government structure is critical as we enter, what I believe to
be, tough and challenging years ahead.

The residents in my district and throughout the county deserve leadership that listens,
deliberates and acts in their interests. My resume and accomplishments demonstrates both a
commitment to the ideals and practical understanding of what is needed to provide responsive
governance within the County as we move forward and address the challenges before us.
