Robert Jeffery has long
service to county farmers
Robert Jeffery retired last week
county committee member for the Farrn Service Agen y.
Mike Harper, the agency director, said the committee
meets twice monthly to make decisions on eligibility for
^^lifTtfmrWarren County resident. Jeffery still lives,
on the farm where he was bom and where five genera-
Uons of Jefferys have lived and worked. . has
In addition to the Farm Service Agency. Jeffery has
served on the Farm Bureau Advisory Board. He was the
Washington Township clerk for 36 years and with the
Farm Credit Agency for 36 years. He is still a"^embj of
the Warren County Fairboard where he has served for 35
years.
Proud Heritage-
Submitted by: Marion Snyder
Few persons are given the privilege to live into their 96th year
and fewer still to remain active all that time and enjoy life to
its fullest each and every day. Mrs. Fleeta Vaiden Gray, who
resides in Dodds, Clearcreek Township, does all that and enjoying
life includes happy reflections upon her heritage. Her genealogy
reaches back into several early Warren County families, which are
the Crane, Hathaway, Lewis and Jeffrey lines.
She has spent her entire life in the same house, where she can look
out a front room window and visualize the years passing by as she
mentally recalls days of the railroad line that ran in front of
that window, the canning factory across todays Ohio 122, a store
that is no more and the many people she has known in four score
years and more. Mrs. Gray, being a religious woman, raised her
children well. Three sons and a daughter (she lost one son
early in his life) and a number of grandchildren and great-grand
children help to make her life zestful.
In 1977 she wrote a handwritten review of her various ancestoral
lines and starts with this introduction. "When one starts writing
and trying to relive events stored away in memory, a_feeling of
sadness comes, but we must face the future God lives and all
is well, so having lived 90% years (then 1977) in the same spot
it is easy to look back and see the passing of generations and
realize how the gradual changes have taken place,"
She started her review with her Grandfather, Charles Alexander
Lewis. (Pictured on Page 32 of the 1903 Warren County Atlas with
a smaller picture beneath, of the house'that Paul Lewis, Sr.,
Grandfather of C. A. Lewis, erected in 1812. It was torn down
in 1902 when Charles A- Lewis erected the house still standing
on the farm at the southwest comer of Rt. 122 and Township Road,
less than a mile east of Mrs. Gray's residence.)
Paul lewis, Sr. migrated from New Jersey to northern Warren County
I'- 1809. Mrs. Gray is descended from him through his son, Paul,
Jr. (1797-1832) who lived a hort, but active life. The family
had come from New Jersey by covered wagon.
Taul, Jr. was only eleven. There were three other children, Nancy,
William and John. Paul, Jr. married Mary Thatcher in 1820 and
sired four children. In additon to Charles Alexander there were
Sa-'ah, William C. (grandfather of Mrs. Louise Herrick until lately
-f Lebanon), and John V. H. Lewis, grandfather of Mrs. Helen Lewis
Wood of Lebanon.
Returning to Paul Jr. His life was shortened by exposure while
driving a team pulling wagons on the rough trails to Sandusky
(on Lake Erie) and back. This exposure and hardship brought on
H caralysis that caused his death. Pcth he and his father are
buried in the Friends Cemetery at Waynesville. * Charles A. Lewis
married Margaret Eleanor Jeffrey (1833-1895), a daughter of
Samuel and Amanda Jeffrey.
Their daughter, Addle Valora, married Benjamin Hathavray Crane,
February 18, 1877. Their daughter, Pleeta Vaiden came on this
earthly scene December 6, 1886 In turn Pleeta married Albert
W. Gray on January 2, 1907 and was soon busy raising a family
as had her grandmothers before her. But let's turn now to her
father's line. Ben Crane, (1851-1924) bore his maternal grand
father's name as his mother was the daughter of Benjamin and
Elizabeth Hathaway. His father and mother were Caleb Merritt
and Phoebe Hathaway Crane.
Moving back still another generation we find "Judge" Daniel Crane,
whos Mfe was Elizabeth Merritt. The "Judge" was in fact a Justice
of the Peace in Clearcreek Township for many years.
Mrs. Gray is quick to point out he only had two of his cases ever
reversed by a higher court. He was also a representative to the
state legislature and was often busy settling estates for his
many friends and acquaintances.
Like many families there have been various spellings of the
surname including Grain, Craine, Crayne, and others. The family
dates to three brothers migrating from Wales into England and
later to America, Mrs. Gray writes. She said family tradition
claims the family has blood strains running back as far as
Charlemagne and Hugh Cabot. As many families in England had
mottoes, the Crane's was reported to be "He who feeds the Crows
will not forget the Cranes."
The Cranes originally settled at what was then called Cranetown
(Clearcreek Township), their home being where todays Riley-Wills
Road joins Hathaway Road, named for Ben H. Crane's ancestors.
The 1903 Atlas' map shows that by that date the Crane name had
disappeared from the Cranetown area but that Benjamin Hathaway
still owned 119 acres as shown by the 1875 map. However, by then
Ben H. Crane had title to the 57 acres at Dodds, that is still in
Mrs. Gray's family's possession. Mrs. Gray, however, does not
have data on the Hathaway line as extensively as is available on
the Jeffrey line.
The Jeffrey's were listed for four generations beyond her grandmother,
Margaret Eleanor Jeffrey Lewis. Margaret was the daughter of Samuel
and Amanda Hathaway Jeffrey. He was the son of Francis and Eleanor
Irons Jeffrey, she possibly being the daughter of Benjamin Hathawas''.
This is uncertain. Samuel Jeffrey's grandparents were John and
Elizabeth Irons Jeffrey. John Jeffrey's parents were Francis and
Mary Jeffrey; his wife was the daughter of James and
Deborah Irons.
While both John Jeffrey and his son, Francis, married Irons
women (that name originally spelled loms) one can not be sure
that they were of the same immediate family. Men did not roam far
to seek a bride in the early and middle 1700's. The oldest birth-
date uncovered by the writer is that of Garrett'Irons, father of
Eleanor who was bom February 13, 1759 and most likely got into
the Revolutionary War before it ended.

S. Frank married Emma Blake.
Mrs. Jeffery died May 31,1863, leaving a husband and two young
children.
Mrs. Samuel Jeffery died August 9,181+9. leaving an infant son
twelve days old. In religious belief and profession she was a Presby
terian. For somd twelve years previous to her death she suffered from
poor health. She was consistent, conscientious Christian woman, and
died rejoicing in the redeeming grace. She was beloved by a large
circle of acquaintances.
In October, I850, Mr. Jeffery Married a second wife in the person
of Miss Mary Jane Kersey, a native of Lebanon, Ohio, born October 10,
1818. One son resulted from this union, Howard, born February 28,1858.
This second companion died November 21+.1870. She was an exemplary
member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and noble womwn, whose
life gave evidence of the genuineness of her profession.
Mr. Jeffery is nearly sixty-seven years of age, but has never
been seriously ill, and has never had occasion for a prescription
from a physician, a very remarkable circumstance. With the exception
of a long and prominent connection with the educational interest of
his Township, he has never held any public office, though often solic
ited to do so. His life has been one of quiet retirement upon his
farm. He has been very busy industrious and frugal and during a res
idence in the county for over half a century, by his inflexible in
tegrity, accommodating spirit, and genial manners, he has earned
that confidence and esteem which he now enjoys. For a man who has /
spent his life upon the soil he has been a great reader. He possesses V
an excellent ludcrement. e cultivated tasteM> and a very warm and sym
pathetic nature, and feels very senibly his afflictions in the loss
( of his companions and sons, and he cannot allude to these berevements
without betraying strong emotion.
Captain Francis Jeffery, fourth son and seventh child of Francis
and Eleanor Jeffery, already noticed, was born in Warren Co., Ohio,
November 9.1ti17. The first twentv-one vears of his life were spent
upon a farm, with such meager facilities for learning as the primitive
schools of the county afforded. When he became of age he paid more
attention to study, and having qualified himself for a teacher, en
