Connectors / Linking words are very important because they indicate the relationship between ideas
in sentences and paragraphs. They have different functions and positions in the sentences.


And expresses addition. When we
use it, we add something to the
previous clause.

Because expresses contrast.
When we use it we are contrasting
two ideas.

Because expresses cause.
When we use it we are
presenting a reason.
Example:
a. We always enjoy our Carnival games. b. I never miss this celebration.
c. Children often fly kites this time of the year. d. Sometimes it rains.
Rule: We use words like always, never, usually, sometimes, etc, to express how often we do
certain things.
Common time expressions: yesterday/the day before yesterday, last week/month/year
winter/summer, last Friday/Monday, three hours/days/ weeks/months/years ago, in 2010, 1973,

Use Past Simple to talk about: an action that happened at a definite time in the past
Exercises: I was hungry after school yesterday.

Adverbs of manner, tell u show something happens. They are usually placed after the main verb or
after the object. We make most of them by adding the participle ly to the corresponding adjective

Obligation: MUST; to say that something is an obligation.
Prohibition: CANT when we are sure that something is not possible or is impossible.
