WELCOME TO GRACE COVENANT!

Thank you for joining us today! We are an historic Presbyterian

congregation offering traditional worship and multiple ministries
for persons of all ages. Please join us following worship
for fellowship in the Social Room. Thank you for turning off
your cell phones, pagers, cameras, and other electronic devices
for the duration of morning worship.

Preparation for Worship

“Jesus had no feeling of enmity toward Gentiles though he was a

member of the Jewish faith and adhered to a certain degree to
Jewish social customs. A sudden departure from the established
traditions would not only have roused the hatred of the Pharisees
and priests but would also have weakened the faith of his
followers. His motives would not have been understood even by
his disciples and the public would have repudiated his as a traitor.
This is the reason why Jesus sent his disciples first to the people of
Israel. They were to be converted first so barriers could be broken
and the principles of a universal brotherhood established.“

A SERVICE FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD
August 23, 2009 11:00 a.m.

GATHER TO GLORIFY GOD

PRELUDE Matins (Morning Prayer) Healey Willan
(1880-1968)

†CALL TO WORSHIP Richard Haney

Pastor: We gather here in the presence of Christ,

our friend and our healer.
People: We come to praise and glorify God,
aware of our weakness, our smallness, and our pain,
but yearning for hope and comfort.
Pastor: We long to encounter the living Christ,
the one who seeks to make us whole.
People: We celebrate that we are welcomed,
loved, and cherished in this place
where Christ is alive and dwells among us.
Let us rejoice and sing God’s praises!

†Please stand for these parts of the service.

†HYMN 108 (blue) Christ Is Alive! Truro

†PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal and merciful God,

you have loved us with a love beyond our understanding,
and you have set us on paths of righteousness for your name’s sake.
Yet we have strayed from your way;
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
through what we have done and what we have left undone.
As we remember the lavish gift of your grace
symbolized in baptism, O God,
we praise you and give you thanks that you forgive us yet again.
Grant us now, we pray, the grace to die daily to sin,
and to rise daily to new life in Christ,
who lives and reigns with you,
and in whose strong name we pray. Amen.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day
he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth
on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall
come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the
life everlasting. Amen.
