The Text for Tomorrow
The way the text is constructed is done so to present a specific
perspective. The fact that it is for Radio National suggests that it is
constructed in a way to present varied perspectives to validate the
collective memory that is not officially recorded.
The purpose is to make the report as objective as possible while still
presenting subjective accounts of the event.
The use of language such as Shot and Crushed is non euphemistic and
highly emotive.
The archival reporting from Peter Cave is documented evidence of the
event, and means that the emotion is quite detached from it. This is then
juxtaposed with Peter Caves recollection of a personal memory further
down.
Etched in the minds the metaphoric language, suggests the permanency
of the impact of the massacre and the evidence that shows people are
commemorating the event validates this assumption.
Peter Caves voice in the text is juxtaposing to Hong Leis
The representation of perspectives is anti china so it is showing a western
perspective, however it is justified by the documented evidence and
historical evidence, through the memories these historical events are
validated.
Hong Leis use of Bureaucratic language, and the way it is highly
constructed further emphasizes the picture painted of the Chinese
government. This excerpt within the construction offers the chinese
perspective on the events and supports the claims made at the beginning
about the chinese wishing to erase the event from Chinas collective
memory.
Pradeep Tanja presents the social commentary and the academic voice.
What this person says is objective and presents a Chinese perspective on
the events. It also gives a social background to the event.
Chai Ling shows the first hand experience, and is presenting a subjective
memory. The use of rhetorical question so What kind of government,
what kind of army would open fire at armless, peaceful student and
citizens has highly emotive language. With Peaceful and armless. It also
represents the feelings had by those who have experience of this memory.
The highly emotive language with negative connotations killed by their
own government, unarmed student protestors. The negative
connotations shape the perspective
Thrown insults, bottles and stones is juxtaposed with gunfire
How has the textual form contributed to the representation of history
and memory?
The textual form of a radio broadcast has contributed to the representation
of a myriad of perspectives that validate the unofficially documented
historical event that is etched in the collective memories of western society.
The textual form has allowed both objective historical records e.g Peter
Caves Archival report, and personal memory e.g Chai Lings personal account
to be shown and thus many representations of both subjective and objective
experience are shown.
