Economy - ISIS - Atacks on Religious Liberty - Government Scandals - Ebola - Persecuted Christans - Rampart Secularism - Same-Sex Marriage - Crumbling Marriages - Wayward Children - Apathetc Christans - Anemic Churches , Etc., Etc.!!!
Are you depressed yet? How can we Christans be realists in an unreal world - opt- mists in the swirling currents of pessimism - heavenly minded in a hell-bent world - joyful in pain?
Perspectve. Biblical perspectve and balance. Many of us need to hit the reset buton. And I fnd one of the best ways is the tried and true Thank You list. There are many ways to do this, but this Thanksgiving season I ofer a suggested list. Give it a readofen! A Thank You List What We Have In Christ
(1) An acceptance in the Beloved which can never be questoned - (Ephesians 1:6). To the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. Page 2 The L ampl i ght er (2) A bounty which can never by withdrawn - (1 Cor. 3:21-23) . Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours: whether Paul or Appollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come - all ae yours. And you are Christs, and Christ is Gods.
(3) A deliverance which can never by excelled - (2 Cor. 1:10). Who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will stll deliver us.
(4) A grace which can never by limited - (2 Cor. 12:9). And He said to me. My grace is sufcient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infrmites, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
(5) A hope which can never be disappointed - (Heb. 6:18,19). That by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong conso- laton, who have fed for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. This hope will have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil.
(6) An inheritance which can never be lost - (1 Peter 1:3-5). Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begoten us again to a living hope through the resur- recton of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptble and undefled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven fro you.
(7) A joy which needs never be diminished - (John 15:11). These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.
(8) A kingdom which can never be overturned - (Heb. 12:28). Therefore, since we are receiving a king- dom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptable with reverence and godly fear.
(9) A nearness to God which can never be reversed - (Eph. 2:13). But now in Christ Jesus you who once were for of have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
(10) A peace which can never be disturbed - (John 14:27). Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart by troubled, neither let it be afraid.
(11) A righteousness which can never by tarnished - (2 Cor. 5:21). For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (12) A salvaton which can never be cancelled - (Heb. 5:9). And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvaton to all who obey Him.
Now, dont you feel beter already? Good. Now, get on with business - joyfully, thankfully. Gary Burden
Change, change, change. Some people love it and some people hate it. I know we have talked before about how issues surrounding change are not new, and have been going on for years, but I was reminded again this past week while doing some reading for school. Take a look at these quotes; I hope they give you a chuckle and a beter perspectve on change.
(All quotes taken from Lectures on Revivals of Religion by Charles Finney, 1868. The entre book can be accessed at htp://www.ccel.org/ccel/fnney/revivals.html)
I remember one minister, who, though quite a young man, used to wear an enormous white wig. And the people talked as if there was a divine right about it, and it was as hard to give it up, almost, as to give up the Bible itself.
By and by, they began to introduce [hymn] books, and let everyone sing from his own book. And what an inno- vaton! Alas, what confusion and disorder it made!
It was thought best to have a select choir of singers sit by themselves and sing, so as to give an opportunity to improve the music. But this was biterly opposed. O how many congregatons were torn and rent in sunder, by the desire of minister and some leading individuals to bring about an improvement in the cultvaton of music, by forming choirs of singers. .on Saturday, November 1st so you will be on tme for church on Sun- day, November 2nd. Giving thanks and giving back Receiving the love and for- giveness God ofers is both humbling and empowering. What greater thing could we express thanks for this month than that the Creator of the universe took special interest in us, while we were stll his enemies, died for our sins, and came back to life that we could know Him and be with him forever. His love overfowing in our own hearts is what drives us to want to pour love into others, in hope that they too, will experience God.
My heart is so thankful for Bethesda, and that each one of you contnues to share the love of Christ in our Awana ministry. It is truly a church wide ministry, and each of you praying, volunteering, invitng, more praying, is why God contnues to trust families to our care. Especially, I want to thank our listeners this month. The relatonship you have with our clubbers and their families is so much more personal than anything I, or even the leaders, are able to do as our ministry has grown. You strengthen our ministry and we do not take you for granted!
Most are aware now that our Puggles leaders will be moving this month. Jane and Johnnie have served with our two year old Awana club for as long as I have been commander. We have frequently joked that there is no age or gender requirement to volunteer in Awana, and Mr. Johnnie would tell you he was the oldest working with the youngest. God certainly would not have called them away from us, unless he had plans already for who would be serving in their place. Please let me know if you have questons or are willing to be our new Puggles leader. Bless the Name of the Lord
Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name. Psalm 100:4
A few weeks ago, I was catching my breath afer getng the children dressed and out the door for school. As I was cleaning the kitchen, I notced what I thought was a piece of trash peeking out from under the refrigerator. When I picked it up, I saw three litle words writen in my 6-year-olds handwritng, God is good. These three words stopped me in my tracks. I began to meditate on His goodness: He is good because He revealed His goodness to my litle one. He allowed me to fnd the note. He provided the breakfast that we just ate. He showed me mercy even though Ive messed up so many tmes, and on and on. I immediately realized I was in Gods presence, and my soul couldnt help but express thanks to Him and praise His name.
This is what the psalmist was teaching us. When we dwell on Gods eternal goodness, our hearts inevitably respond with praise and thanksgiving. The tmes in our lives when we are not thankful are because our eyes are not open to the blessings around us - even the litle things that lie upon the ground.
Father, thank You for speaking to us. I pray that we will have eyes to see Your blessings all around us and faith like a child.
