Ancient Egyptian Archaeological Ethics Debate

Developed in the early 20
th
century, partage is a system where archaeological discovery
teams are allowed to share in their finds with local governments, as opposed to handing
them over in full. This is, in part, how museums the world over showcase antiquities
from across the globe. Do you think this is an ethical practice, or do you believe that
artifacts should remain in the country of origin? Apply this thinking to Ancient Egypt.

Consider the following questions:
Is it more important that artifacts be seen in their geographic, cultural context, or
that they be seen by the most number of people in a prominent museum?
Should artifacts be returned to their country of origin in order to right past
wrongs?
In what ways were some of these artifacts taken, and does the method matter years
later, or should there be a statute of limitations?
Is it justified to remove artifacts in order to preserve them from destruction?
How does the recent political situation in Egypt encourage or discourage whether or
not artifacts should be returned?
Are there examples from other countries about what has been done?

This debate will occur on Saturday. Therefore, homework over the next few nights is to
prepare for the debate, but you will have the benefit of another class meeting between
now and the event. You are responsible for creating a Google doc where you will outline
your arguments and also take notes when the other group speaks.

The format will be as follows, with each team having (a) turn(s):
1. Opening Statement: assert your position. You may prepare any type of
audio/visual to aid in your presentation.
2. Argument(s): present evidence to illustrate and promote your POV.
3. Rebuttal(s): a chance to respond to the argument(s) of your opponent.
4. Closing Statement: reassert your position taking into account the discourse.

You will be graded on your Google Doc with your debate prep, and also your
participation in the debate, using the history department presentation rubric with
which you are familiar. Each student will receive an individual grade.
