Overview
This hands-on training course explores VMware ESX Server. It covers
this products structure, configuration, monitoring, performance, shared
disks, clustering, storage area networks, troubleshooting, and scripting
features. Practical labs give participants real-world experience.

Who should attend?
This course is designed for VMware product integration and sales
partners, as well as system administrators and systems engineers who
are responsible for the integration, administration, and management of
VMware ESX Server.
Prerequisites
Completion of ESX Server System Management I course, or equivalent
experience. Some scripting experience is required for the Scripting
module.
Pricing
$2,200 per student for open-enrollment classes
$15,000 plus travel and incidentals for an onsite class of up to
12 students; $1,500 for each additional student. Customer must

MODULE 1 Introduction
Course objectives and agenda.
MODULE 2 The Structure of ESX Server
The relationship of vmnix, the monitor, and the VMkernel, with
views into the Console OS fle layout and the boot process. A
command-line view of how the MUI and the Remote Console
system run. World numbers. High-level tour of /proc/vmware.
MODULE 3 ESX Server from the Command Line
Details of confguration fle syntax. Survey and intro of features
not ofered by the MUI. Stopping and starting VMs from the
command line. Grand tour of useful /usr/sbin/vm* commands,
especially vmkfstools, with practical examples.
MODULE 4 Practical ESX Server Confguration
Disk layout issues. Memory testing. Operational best practices.
Mapping from virtual resources to physical resources. Users and
groups. PAM authentication against external sources. Activating
Samba in the Console OS .
MODULE 5 Monitoring and Performance Analysis
Assessing the performance needs of workloads. Identifying
limiting resources from the VMs point of view. Tuning to respond
to resource needs. Discussion of OEM monitoring tools.
MODULE 6 Shared Disks and Clustering
VMFS accessibility settings. Clustering explained. Concept of a
quorum disk. Installation of cluster-in-a-box Microsoft Clustering
Services. Installation of clustering between ESX Servers in a SAN
environment using Microsoft Clustering Services.
MODULE 7 Storage Area Networks
Review/survey of key SAN concepts. SAN adapters and features
supported in ESX Server. Explanation of VMkernel settings.
Interaction of VMFS and SANs. Multipathing.
MODULE 8 Scripting
Key scripting concepts. How to use VmCOM and VmPerl.
Walkthrough of sample programs. The vmware-cmd utility. How
to automate repetitive tasks.
MODULE 9 Troubleshooting ESX Server
Key logs. Frequently occurring problems (symptom/fault/fx).
Top 10 support issues. Use of vm-support script.
