Vision Statement

We are a vibrant, loving community and an inspirational resource for spiritual awakening and personal growth.
Mission Statement
The purpose of this Church shall be to serve as a Spiritual Development Center by making available the knowledge and practice
of Science of Mind to all people, and especially to its members, and to foster their spiritual, cultural and general well-being and to
provide facilities for education, fellowship and public worship.
From childrens stories to movies, to
classic tales, to Christmas carols, to the
Christmas story itself, we hear about
miracles more at this time of year than
any other. Whether it is Scrooge learning
to love others or a man learning to love
his life by seeing what would have been
missing if he was, the miracle is the same.
Something that is hidden within the indi-
vidual is released and life changes. Isnt
this what we yearn for? We wish for a
transforming experience that will let us
express the love that is already here,
buried under the hurt and fear and anger.
But what is a miracle? The dictionary
says it is an effect in the physical world
which surpasses all known human or
natural powers and is therefore ascribed
to the supernatural agency, a wonderful
thing. Then goes on to dene wonder as
the emotion excited by what is strange
and surprising, astonishment, amaze-
ment, awe. Perhaps emotion is an
important part of the formula for creating
miracles.
In Ideas of Power, Ernest Holmes
wrote, It is a simple proposition:
everyone must love and be loved or he
wont be fullled or happy. Therefore, it
is believed that love [releases] the greatest
energy in the Universe, the greatest spir-
itual energy and without love there is a
certain part of life that does not come to
fulllment. This is real; it is dynamic; it
isnt just a sweet sentimentality, emotion-
ally, psychologically and actually for in
reality love is the only final security in
the Universe; love is the greatest healing
power in the Universe, and the only
thing that binds people together in a
community of Spirit. Love just plain love;
liking everybody. We are so constituted
that real love is real only in such degree
as it is universal.
I notice that Holmes isnt taking
about that one great romantic relation-
ship or even the love of a parent for a
child, but is saying a universal love, one
where we love each other, even those
whom we have called enemies, is essen-
tial to creating spiritual energy and
healing within ourselves and others. He
often wrote about the combination of
feeling and words, emotions and mental
work, as the secret of effective prayer. And
for Holmes effective prayer was a prayer
that demonstrated a change in the affairs

FROM THE BOARD
Wilvesta Morgan Jr., President
As I prepare to write this article, it is
with a heart full of love and thanks-
giving that I pause for a few minutes
to reflect upon how blessed our
community has been for this entire
year. I think of the song we have
heard so often, Count your many
blessings, name them one by one,
Count you many blessings see what
God has done". How appropriate it is for us to be so grateful
for how blessed we have been during this amazing year. So
many magnicent things have taken place and we have been
together to witness and to celebrate each event.
Since we are a family that believes in prayer, these are
the leading qualities that are so vitally important to us:
#1 LOVE: the excellent manner that we welcome
everyone to our church, starting with our Greeters and
Ushers
#2 CREATIVITY: the music by Mary Ekler, our Music
Director, and David and Christy Cohen, who ll in for Mary
when she is absent, our soloists: Paula Aghajanian and Tina
Meeks,
#3 TRUTH: the messages from Rev. Kris and Rev. Carol
on Sundays and Wednesdays.
I wish to expand on our two fabulous ministers. Our
congregation is so proud of our ministerial staff. They are
excellent speakers and their topics are always just what you
need to carry you through the week. Their leadership ability
is outstanding. As Board of Trustees President, it is a plea-
sure to work with these highly talented ladies.
#4 FAITH: Our church has A SUPER GROUP of
Practitioners that total thirty! You will nd them integrated
into all areas of our church. You will nd them doing the
invocation in our Sunday Service, and leading the morning
meditation before service. They are teaching our youth and
adult classes. And, they participate on all of our committees.
As you can see, our Practitioners are a very active group and
the list of Practitioners continue to grow as they complete
their studies and pass their test to become licensed.
#5 COMMUNITY: We have often heard these words from
many speakers. They are: It takes a village to raise a child.
Deleting the word child, I know that it takes a group of
like-minded happy people to make an exciting love-filled
church that we experience whenever and wherever we meet.
From the Board of Trustees, it is an honor to express our
gratitude to every member, every coordinator and volunteer,
every instructor who has taught a class and their assistants,
every volunteer and anyone else who has helped to make
this year so exciting. We are so grateful to all of you for all
that you have contributed in making this church be a
howling success. This could not have happened without your
help. Our Community stands in total awe for all of the love
that you have given us.
I will briey touch on our October 19 Annual Meeting.
This is the most important meeting of the year and it is an
honor for the Board to make its annual report to our church
membership regarding the nancial condition of our church.
(If you missed it, members may pick up a copy of the report
in the ofce. We always encourage all members of our church
to attend. We reelected Kellie Mulhern Davis and Peggy
Huber to full terms of ofce. We reluctantly have accepted
Kim Weathers resignation. She has moved quite a distance
away, making Board service not reasonable. She continues
as a Practitioner and will be supporting our Wednesday
Healing Light Service. We also are grateful for the service of
Teresa Day, who has let us know that she will be moving at
the end of December. These two beloved people have served
as responsible Trustees for two years, we thank them for their
outstanding service. We are looking for two people who
would be willing to ll the remaining one year terms.
In closing, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, Rev. Kris,
Rev. Carol and our Practitioners, it has been an honor to
serve you, our outstanding congregation for another year.
Together we have accomplished all of our goals. Our church
is solvent, all bills are paid and we have revenue in the Bank.
We can applaud ourselves and thank God for all of the bless-
ings that we have received.
Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year to all.
With a joyous heart,
Wilvesta Morgan, Jr.
You are invited to a Sock Hop

BLISSFUL LIVING
Rev. Dr. Carol Bliss
Happiness
As I write, a leaf blower is rattling my
windows but Ive decided to be happy
despite the noise. If youre ready for
more joy, if youd like to feel freer and
happier, heres a simple recipe to help you begin.
Create a vision begin by seeing yourself as light, free,
and happy. Imagine yourself as productively used, valued,
giving your highest gifts to the world. Make your vision real.
Start a visioning board. Picture your ideal life. See yourself
having new experiences, surrounded by love and apprecia-
tion.
Get rid of what doesnt serve you consider what youd
like to release, the drama, the grudges, any sense of failure.
Let it all go. You deserve the best in life. Shed any thoughts
of having disappointed people or not having made the most
of your life. Free yourself.
Take a risk. Take one small step toward your dream. Dont
worry about mistakes. Just one small movement in the direc-
tion of happiness can make you feel as if youre on your way.
Honor your courage.
Cultivate gratitude. Notice the small thingsbeauty in
the world, kindness, the color of the sky, the way the wind
feels against your skin, all the thousands of components in
your body that work in perfect synchronicity to carry you
through life.
Know that you are loved and supported by a God who
knows only good. Nothing that has come before can limit
your happiness. God is pure Love and you are living your life
in God.
With Gratitude Abounding
Rev. Dr. Carol
of the person being prayed about. It wasnt enough to
simply leave feeling better to return to the same old stuff,
but conditions had to actually be transformed by the prayer.
Holmes believed, and I agree, that Love points the way
and Law makes the way possible. This is the combination
of Love and Law that make up the Science of Mind, and
create in each of us the ability to miraculously transform
our lives. During this holiday (holy days) season, let us each
be committed to love. Holmes wrote in The Voice Celestial:
Whose heart is xed upon the good because
It is the good shall ll his soul with good,
And he who revels in the beautiful
Because he sees in it the beautiful
Shall grow a soul as beautiful as well.
So he who loves all things that live and breathe
Visions & Values cont. from page 1
Shall know the Love of Loves within the Me.
Where love is felt, where unity is known,
And all the woes that damn mankind have own,
While he who serves but one has served the Whole,
God loves the all and knows them soul by soul. . .
Each birth is virgin birth,
And each has come immaculate to earth.
Know that you are made of God-stuff, in the image and
likeness of the Divine, and as this is true of you, it is also
true of all. Let us use the birth story of Jesus as our Divine
Example this season to birth the Christ Principle into our
own hearts. Let us say with Mary, I will magnify the Lord
and feel the awe of being asked to carry the Christ within
us, then create Peace on Earth and Good Will to
humankind.
From my heart to yours,
Rev. Kris
GIVING OPPORTUNITIES
By Joan Anderson
Santa Bags We will again be lling Santa Bags for the
Coalition for the Homeless that are given out on
Christmas Eve for those staying at the Cold Weather
Shelter. Bags will be available beginning of
December. Things to put in are hygiene items, treats,
pens/paper, puzzle books, socks, maybe warm sweatshirt,
etc. More information will be available at church.
Cold Weather Shelter Dinner We will once again be
sponsoring dinner for the Cold Weather Shelter at St.
Marthas on Sunday, February 15. Many volunteers will be
needed to prepare the meal, serve the meal, work in the
clothing room, shower table, and sign in tables. Sign up
board will be up mid-January. See Joan Anderson or Laura
Lampys if you have any questions.
Funding the Cold Weather Dinner Our annual soup
sales will begin probably in December. Also you can
purchase scrip (gift cards) from church for Walmart or
Smart and Final that are used to purchase the food. Budget
is about $800 to prepare 250+ meals.
Ongoing Collection Basket We collect hygiene items
on an ongoing basis for Prototypes Womens Center and
the Coalition.
Prototypes can also use yarn for the women to use to
crochet and books: either ction or non-ction.
SPIRIT'S ENTERPRISE THE BUSINESS OF CHURCH
When we think of our church and the role it plays in
our lives, Im sure we all immediately think of those quali-
ties that are set forth in our Vision Statement. We see that
our church is truly a loving community, one that embraces
us in an atmosphere of love, caring and support. We see its
vibrancy, the positive life-energy that just seems to spill over
into every encounter and into every activity that we share
as a church family. And, of course, we see it as an inspira-
tional resource that continues to support our spiritual awak-
ening, personal growth and the resulting transformation of
our lives through Sunday and Wednesday services, classes,
and other activities that enable us to learn and to practice
the Science of Mind philosophy.
What probably doesnt immediately come to mind,
however, when we think about our church is that there are
also business functions and a financial infrastructure that
enable it to provide this wonderful and enriching environ-
ment. The Board of Trustees that you have elected is respon-
sible for administering the churchs business and nancial
matters. The Board works from a base of spiritual principle
and good stewardship to oversee our financial affairs on
behalf of all of our members and all those who pass through
our doors. It is important to remember, however, that the
church does not belong to the Board of Trustees nor does it
belong to our Ministers. It belongs to each member of our
church family.
Your Board of Trustees works with a yearly budget.
Budgeting serves two important purposes for all of us. First,
it allows us to plan activities and expenditures throughout
the year by giving a twelve month projection of our antici-
pated income and known expenses. Second, it provides us
with an opportunity to set the vision for our church for the
coming year. This vision is based on you, our congregation.
You are the reason for the programs and facilities. It is your
spiritual awakening and personal growth that the church (its
staff, programs, and facilities) and its budget are here to
support.
Our biggest income item is your generous and gracious
giving in support of our vision for our church, followed by
classes, special events, rentals, bookstore sales, Ministry of
Prayer, scrip sales, etc. To be able to accurately budget, we
ask you each year to share with us your intention. Durning
the month of November, we focus as a community on
committed, intentional, systematic giving through the
implementation of a pledge program. This is a program of
planned giving. Through a pledge program, we each make
a written commitment to ourselves and to Spirit to give a
specic amount each week, month or year to our church.
A pledge program serves us as members of the congre-
gation by giving us an opportunity to prayerfully consider
our pledge as a channel to invest in making a positive change
for ourselves and for our world by using the spiritual prin-
ciples of prosperity. It does not necessarily ask us to increase
our current level of giving. It should not be considered as a
bill you owe. Once a pledge is made, nobody will be calling
to ask you about the status of your pledge. it is not written
in concrete. If you make a pledge and your life circumstances
change, you are free to increase or decrease the amount of
your pledge at any time just by turning in a new pledge card
or calling the ofce.
A pledge program serves the Board of our church by
allowing us to make better financial decisions based on
expected income. Your individual pledge is condential, the
Board works with the cumulative total only. This amount
allows us to increase or decrease programs, schedule or defer
needed repairs to the facility, and expand or contract our
nancial commitments to our staff, by allowing us to fore-
cast what we are expecting to receive.
A letter has gone out to all of our mailing list with an
intention card and brochure about committed giving. During
November we simply ask that you prayerfully consider your
gift for 2015 and inform us by either bring your intention
card to church and placing it in the box in the lobby or
mailing it. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask
Rev. Kris, Wilvesta or any of your Board members. Thank
you for your generous and gracious gifts!

renew the community each year. Plan to attend this uplifting
day! Please bring a dish to share for the feast after service.
World Peace Meditation and Peace Breakfast
The World Peace Meditation began on December 31, 1986.
It was conceived by John Randolph Price, who believed that
united prayer could change the consciousness of the world.
He put out the word for people of all religious backgrounds
and faith traditions to stop for an hour of meditation at noon
Greenwich Mean Time. Around the world people responded
by being willing to meet in prayer for world peace. Religious
Science churches have kept this tradition alive with annual
meditation services. Our Sanctuary will be open at 4 a.m. on
Wednesday, December 31 for an hour long meditation service.
You are invited to join in consciousness for peace by either
attending the service or by setting your alarm clock and rising
to spend the hour in meditation at your home. We know the
power of prayer and believe that we create our world thor-
ough prayer and thought. We will serve a full breakfast after
the meditation service in Harmony Hall. It is our tradition to
take down the Christmas tree after breakfast and are grateful
for volunteers who can stay and assist us.

SANCTUARY FOR SPIRITUAL LIVING ENDOWMENT FUND
LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE
By Terri Thayer, SSL Committee Member
Just for a moment, imagine yourself in the future, say
100 years out. Now imagine that you have returned to Citrus
Avenue. Things have changed! Some of the houses have been
replaced by high rise apartments, or a park, or a business
complex. But there on the east side of Citrus, between
Gladstone and Arrow Highway is the Sanctuary for Spiritual
Living, with a banner which says Celebrating 150 years of
Light and Love.
An endowment fund makes such a future possible. The
endowment fund is not a line item in the budget like the
roof fund or the general maintenance reserve. An endow-
ment fund is a separate entity, surrounded by policies and
procedures. It grows through specic donations and bequests,
and when it reaches a a certain previously decided amount
of money, in our case, $25,000, then the interest earned on
that money may be used for projects that sustain or grow
the church. However, the amount spent will never take
money from the principal, only the interest. That is why an
endowment fund is really a long-term project.
We often hear bequest and planned giving used in
conjunction with each other. Planned giving simply means
you have made a plan to give some money to something. In
other words, it is a way you can leave money or other assets
to a non-profit at your passing. Up until that point, you
control the asset for as long as you need it. It costs you
nothing now. And, there is no requirement that you tell
anyone your plans.
Here are a few ways that you can plan your giving:
Leave the majority of your funds to loved ones and then
name our Sanctuary for Spiritual Living Endowment Fund
as the recipient of a specic amount or percentage of money
from your estate.
Leave whatever is left after all other disbursements have
been made. This is called a residuary bequest.
If you outlive one of your beneciaries, you can stipu-
late that bequest comes to the endowment. This is called a
contingent bequest.
You could also open a savings account and when lling
out the account information, put Sanctuary for Spiritual
Living Endowment Fund as the beneficiary. Or, if you
already have a savings account, you can change the bene-
ciary at any time. Up until you make your transition, it is
your money to do with as you wish.
When we were infants or children, some of us received
a life insurance policy from a godparent or relative. If you
still have that policy, you could update the beneciary on
the policy.
Remember, you control these assets until your passing.
We have all benefited in ways large and small from
attending this church and studying the teachings of Ernest
Holmes. Just imagine for a moment the face of someone who
walks into our Sanctuary one hundred years from now and
has the same life altering experiences you have had. Your
support of the SSL Endowment Fund will make that experi-
ence possible.

Grounding with the Tree of Life:
Evoke Creativity through Meditation and Art
By Leri Smith, R.Sc.P.
God is the source of all creativity, therefore we are all
creative beings. We are on the planet to discover, cultivate
and deliver our own creative self-expression. This comes in
a variety of ways and one of the most enthralling ways the
express creativity is through art. Art enthralls the human
spirit. When we see great art, a surge of life energy rushes
through us and we are inspired to tap into our own creativity.
This aliveness awakens within us an impulsion to self-
express. This is the time to let inspiration flow into your
awareness through attunement with the Cosmic Creative
Principle. Conscious creativity is already within you, and
now is the chance to let it out
In this workshop, we will be creating our own Tree of Life,
based on Austrian painter Gustav Klimts Tree of Life
(1909). Through meditation and prayer (techniques that
cause deep inner relaxation and silencing of the ego) we are
allowed to reach that place of openness and receptivity, and
unlock the storehouse of conscious creativity that is already
within.
The Tree of Life is very symbolic across cultures, in various
religions, within myths, and as a mystical concept. It repre-
sents the interconnectedness of all life on our beautiful
planet. The Tree of Life connects all forms of creation. The
Tree of Life is considered to be the symbol of Creator.
This dynamic workshop, taught by Leri Smith is sched-
uled for Sunday, November 9, 1 3 p.m. Tuition: $25 love
offering, plus $10 material fee.

of right. Sunday, January 11, 1 p.m., Love Offering $30.

Treatment For November

Treatment For December
by Linda Cullerton, R.Sc.P.
The love of God is the One heart. Each of us warm and
cuddled in that love. We are in this season to experience the
beauty of the weather and the amazing friends and family that
we love. Love owing easily and effortlessly as a breeze through
the trees. When we stand in the warm California afternoon
with the breeze caressing our faces we have the moment to feel
our hearts connected. The heart of God in action and nudging
us gently to remind us that we are part of that One mind
and One heart.
I honor the unication of the One and myself. I feel the
moments of tenderness and allow more to come to me as they
ow around and though my consciousness. The pleasure and
excitement of the one heart playing on the wind is my gift of
the season. What I know to be true for myself I know is true
for everyone.
I am the child of the One heart and mind. I realize this
fact and know it for all of us. I hold the knowledge of whole-
ness and perfect health of each of us. I see vibrant light in all
faces and bodies as they more through their activities. There
is an abundance that lls each persons life. All that is seen and
unseen runs over as it fills to over flowing each person and
each situation. All love, all light and all hope are blessings
one the breeze of the One.
In this moment I stop and give thanks and claim all the
good that is God for each heart. I claim the peace that passes
understanding as the grateful gift. I know this is true and I am
so touched with gratitude.
I release these words knowing they are imbued with the
love of God.
And So It Is.
