ELSI BARTLEY LITTLE, a longtime Austin resident, teacher, wife, and mother,
passed away on September 26, 2014 at the end of a day affectionately named Kelsi Little
Day by her family and friends. On a trip to Disneyworld in December 2013, Kelsi received
a call from her doctor revealing that she had breast cancer. Despite her diagnosis, Kelsi remained
positive. She continued to contribute to her community and to work as a 2nd
grade teacher at Lake Travis Elementary during much of her treatment. She is
survived by her husband Thomas and their two year old son, Vann.
Thomas remembers his wife as an Austin girl through and through. Her family moved to Austin from Iowa in 1983, and she lived here for the rest of her life.
She attended Bedicheck Middle School, Crockett High, and earned her Bachelors
degree from Southwest Texas State University.
Kelsi taught for Lake Travis ISD for 13 years. She spent her first 2 years teaching kindergarten at Bee Caves Elementary. She moved to Lake Travis Elementary
and found her calling teaching 2nd grade. She taught 2nd for 11 years and never
wanted to teach any other grade.
Kelsi and Thomas were married on August 15, 2011 in Turks and Caicos. Their son Vann was
6 months old and attended the wedding. Kelsi and Thomas were married for just over two years at
the time of her passing. Thomas remembers his wife as a positive and adventurous person. She
loved traveling anywhere she could. She spent a semester in Sweden while in college, and also
traveled to Italy, Russia, Finland, Costa Rica, Canada, and several other places that Im sure I dont
know about! She was very quick to smile and laugh and was an eternal optimist; she kept her smile
up until the end.
Kelsis love of life, commitment to her students, and beautiful spirit endeared her to many in
the community. Her friend and coworker, Davina Stringer, served as team leader with Kelsi at Lake
Travis Elementary. I had the utmost respect for her insight, experience, and professionalism. We
also had commonalities that always brought our conversations to matters of the heart: our students, our children, and our Aggie husbands. Davina also remarked that, despite Kelsis illness,
she was always quick to smile and play. A few months ago, we had all been borrowing swim-wear
at my house, gearing up for a splash park/swim play date. Kelsi was such a trooper, determined not
to let her discomfort and loss stop her from getting into the water with Vann and the rest of us.
After Kelsis last hope of treatment had failed, her health faded all too quickly. We celebrated
her on Kelsi Little Day, Friday, September 26th. I believe she held on until then because thats just
the kind of person she was. She held on. Knowing Kelsi taught me about the incredible privilege
we have to enjoy relationships...each moment counts. Kelsi lives on in the grateful consciousness
of the moments I cherish with my children, husband, and loved ones. That is her legacy to me.
During her final days, Kelsis only request to anyone who asked what she wanted was, Take
care of my boy. During Kelsis fight with cancer, Davina established an avenue for supporters who
wanted to make donations and rally with Kelsi in her fight at: https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/
fmcw4. Now that Kelsi has passed, fundraising efforts have shifted to continue to support the family and to honor Kelsis only wish, Take care of my boy. Donations can be made at the above site

and tag, it was played until Carter yelled, We dont like you! and Gregory
confirmed this and yelled, YEAH!
And lo, he grabbed his shovel and smacked it down, which brought a
voice like thunder that said Yellow light! and then he stomped his cloven
hooves and shrieked and the voice commanded, Red light! But he looked
both the yellow light and the red light
in the eye and laughed and into the Out
Known As Time he was placed. And they
tisked and clucked and remarked, Twas
no shovel he had, but a pitchfork.
As the Time of Outdoor ended and the
Time of Snack began, he no longer walked
amongst them unnoticed, but like a sharp
piece of Lego stuck in their feet.
After the Time of Potty, he washed his
hands and his clothes and the floor and
those around him. And then poopeth he
did go. Not on the potty, but behind the
potted plant. Because it was safe. And
they sighed deeply and whispered the
Prayer of the Pull-Up and wiped and wiped and wiped and called up the
Gods of Sanitation and wiped some more.
During the Time of Clean Up, there did occur a kerfuffle
between him and Jeffery and Marcus and Quincey that shook
the rafters. Then, using a bardic lute, he sang of the kerfuffle
to others over meade juice, but not before they put him in the
Zone Known As Chill and told him to sloweth his motor.
The Transitions, they will be the death of us, they did mutter, and said five Hail-Maria-Montessoris for good measure and
then finallyOH FINALLYit was The Time Known As Lunch,

After much pillaging and plunderingbeware the ides of

and Mary Beth, a noble knight arrived at last to purge the
kingdom of the devil.
In she strode, wielding the sword of 1-2-3 MAGIC and the
awesome power of love, and she looked into the face of chaos
and commanded, Come.
And he went. Cloven hooves into Stride Rites. Horns receding.
And they sighed with relief, for they had survived another
day with that plague of school systems in kingdoms everywhere.
That beast that goes by the name: BOY.
A Year with
Frog and Toad
at the ZACH
STORY BY AVA LOVE HANNA
PHOTOS COMPLIMENTS OF ZACH THEATRE
ACH THEATREopened its 20142015 Family Series with a production of the Tony
Award-nominated musical A Year with Frog and Toad. The show, an adaptation of Arnold
Lobels well-loved books, tells the story of Frog and Toads friendship throughout each of the
four seasons.
The musical featured an incredible cast with superb performances by Nicholas Kier as Frog and
Chase Brewer in the role of Toad. Kelly Petlin, Josh Wechsler, and Megan Richards Wright did an
outstanding job as the ensemble playing various characters throughout the show and enchanting the
audience with their antics.
The story follows Frog and Toad on their adventures over the course of a year, and
incorporates some of the duos most well-known and loved stories. From Toads attempt
to grow flowers in the spring, his fear of looking silly in a bathing suit in the summer,
the pairs attempts to help each other rake leaves in the fall, through to a bumpy sleigh
ride down a steep hill in the winter, the show offers a number of vignettes that reveal
that Frog and Toad possess a friendship that lasts through every season.
The set made fabulous use of the available space and included the two houses of
Frog and Toad with an open area downstage. The houses were built on rotating
platforms and turned to reveal either the front door or the inner rooms of the duos
homes. With a few simple prop changes and the ingenious use of trap doors and
lighting, the small set took on the aspects of an entire forest and transformed itself
right in front of the audiences eyes to accommodate each season.
From its vaudeville inspired costumes and musical numbers to its high energy
choreography, A Year with Frog and Toad is not merely a show for children but is
a top quality production that can and should be enjoyed by audience members of
all ages. Even adults will catch themselves humming along to Getta Loada Toad,
a standout song and dance number in which the entire ensemble joins together to
sing about their hopes of catching a peek of Toad in his bathing suit.
The show was directed by Nat Miller, the Director of Education at ZACH
Theatre. He said, A Year with Frog and Toad is an incredible show that brings the
books to life in a way that is charming, funny, and enjoyable for all ages. It is the
only childrens theatre production nominated for a Tony because of its incredible
music and vaudevillian aesthetic. It is not to be missed!
A Year with Frog and Toad runs through December 12th on the Topfer stage of
ZACH Theatre.

Rough Hollow has higher MUD taxes because its MUD was established so recently. Rates will eventually fall over the long term as
the neighborhood retires more of the debt. At the moment, however, MUD rates for residents are among the highest.
Here is the 2014 taxing jurisdiction information for a 3 bedroom, 2bath, 2151 sq. ft. home in The Overlook, built in 2013 and
appraised at $352,540.

Keeping Healthy
IN THE FACE OF MEGA-GERMS
STORY BY AVA LOVE HANNA
ERMS AREall over the news. Stories about the fight against
Ebola reaching U.S. soil, cruise ships plagued with Norovirus,
and worries about superbugs like MRSA abound. For the typical
American it seems like the threat of major illness is everywhere. The recent
isolated cases of Ebola in the United States have raised the reporting of germ
threats to a fevered pitch. According to an article in the Washington Post,
David Kaplan of the American Counseling Association argues, People are
feeling out of control. Even if the threat of something like Ebola is minuscule
or remote, hysterical media coverage can lead us to develop a cognitive bias
that things occur more frequently than they actually do. In the case of Ebola
in the United States, fear has spread faster than the virus.
So what really are the risks of illness from threats like Ebola and other
germs for Americans? The answer is fairly low and depends on risk factors
like travel and occupation. In her article, Germs in the News for AARP,
Julie Bain breaks down the most talked about germ threats and explains how
likely one is to get sick from them.
In the case of Ebola, its all
about location. The people most
likely to be at risk for infection are
those traveling to West Africa. By
heeding the advice of U.S. health
officials and avoiding travel to
countries being hardest hit by the
illness, the average American is unlikely to come into contact with Ebola.
Location is also an issue for illnesses like Chikungunya, which is spread by
mosquitoes in tropical climates like the Caribbean, and MERS, Middle East
Respiratory Syndrome, which is mostly found in areas near Saudi Arabia.
These germs make headlines in the United States, but they rarely make it
to U.S. soil.
For Americans, more caution should be given to illnesses caused by
MRSA and Norovirus. MRSA is a staph infection that is resistant to many
antibiotics. It requires direct contact to spread, but risk of illness can be lowered with proper hygiene techniques like hand washing and ensuring that
cuts are bandaged. The same holds true for Norovirus, a gastrointestinal
virus. Avoiding close contact with infected people and hand washing are the
best bets to avoid catching this bug. The bottom line is that illness happens,
but proper hygiene and common sense will keep most Americans healthy and
free of the germs threats that are making headlines around the world.

Lakeway Dermatology
COMFORTABLE SETTING, personalized attention, advanced technology and training in a discreet relaxing environmentthe practice at
Lakeway Dermatology is different than most dermatology offices. We
believe that healthy skin leads to beautiful skin, and you can count on our
board certified dermatologists to help you achieve both.
Lakeway Dermatology opened its doors twelve years ago specializing in
skin cancer detection and treatment including Mohs Micrographic Surgery.
Realizing the need for dermatologist supervised cosmetic treatments,
Lakeway Dermatology expanded to include a cosmetic and laser center.
Lakeway Dermatology is now offering an innovative way to address the
common signs of aging. Micro-needling, also called Collagen Induction
Therapy, provides a gentle, effective treatment for fine lines, wrinkles, loose
skin, acne scarring, stretch marks, and hyperpigmentation. During this procedure, tiny needles are used to create micro-injuries to the skin in order to
produce collagen and elastin. The skins repair process results in a thicker
dermis, and lines and wrinkles become less noticeable. The superficial microchannels also allow topical gels, creams and serums to be absorbed more
effectively. Micro-needling can be used on the entire body, and treatment
typically takes thirty minutes or less. The immediate effect after the treatment is a glow to the skin. In the six months following treatment, the skin
continues to improve as collagen production increases. Patients see an enormous difference after just one session; however, optimal results are achieved
with a series of treatments spaced at six week intervals. Contact us to learn
more about this remarkable procedure and come experience rejuvenation
without surgical intervention at Lakeway Dermatology.

Fresh Dermatology
WHETHER YOU ARE ENTERTAINING guests this holiday or attending someone elses affair, theres a lot to think about. While its easy to
remember to get your hair and nails done, skincare is sometimes forgotten.
Below are a few strategies to make sure you stand out like the North Star at
your big event:
Light reflects best off of a smooth surface. Over time, the surface of the skin
can become cluttered with dead skin cells and fine hairs called vellus hairs. A
medical procedure called Dermaplaning, when performed by a trained expert
such as licensed aesthetician Susan Perry of Fresh Dermatology, can safely
remove these superficial flaws, leaving radiant, silky smooth skin below.
The week before a big event is not the time for a major overhaul, but a
very mild chemical peel or facial can illuminize the skin for a radiant glow.
Treatments should be customized to your skin type, so be sure to consult
with board certified dermatologist Dr. Candace Thrash, and avoid using
harsh products like retinoids for a few days beforehand.
Red noses may look great on a certain jolly old elf, but the rest of us look
better with more of a porcelain glow. Redness of the face is often due to a
condition called rosacea, and it can become worse with spicy foods, cold
winds, and alcoholic beverages. Luckily, theres now a very effective medication available to control the redness caused by rosacea. Schedule an appointment at Fresh Dermatology to find out what medications or products are
right for you.

NATURAL BIO HEALTH is a medical clinic located in Lakeway that specializes in bioidentical hormone treatment and medical weight loss. Board
certified physicians are on site Monday through Friday and the medical staff
has more than 70 years of medical experience.
Natural Bio Health is locally owned with 4 clinics in Texas. It was the
first clinic in Texas to offer bioidentical hormone treatment for men and
women. The medical staff was the first to recognize the connection between
hormones and weight loss and has successfully treated thousands of clients
over the past 15 years.
In the early years, the clinical practice served primarily female clients
who were menopausal, suffering from hot flashes, low energy, poor sleep
and excess belly fat. The clients would then refer family members and friends
who were enduring various conditions like difficult periods, migraines, poor
sleep, infertility, weight struggles, low energy and low sex drive. Many of
these women were using anti-depressants and other pharmaceutical drugs
and wanted to stop taking them.
Over the years, female patients would refer their husbands and fathers
and male friends to the clinic. As increasing numbers of men began to understand the benefits of hormone therapy, particularly testosterone, the number
of male patients increased. Natural Bio Health now serves a patient population that is made up of 40% men and 60% women. The client list ranges in
age from pre-teens to post baby boomers.
The clinic offers natural solutions to solve immediate health concerns and
prevention for the future.

DIGITAL DENTISTRY
IS BASED RIGHT HERE
IN BEE CAVE.
STORY BY CATHIE PARSSINEN
PHOTOS BY BRANDI NELLIS AND SMILE DESIGNS
One of the leaders of the industry is Dr. Todd Ehrlich. Dr. Ehrlich has been
on the forefront of digital dentistry for 15 years and is a consultant for the
biggest and most innovative companies in dentistry. His passion for hightech dentistry has given him the opportunity to lecture across the U.S. and
internationally. He completes live patient demonstrations at the annual
American Dental Association meeting where thousands of dentists discover the attributes of digital dentistry. As in any industry, dentistry benefits
by going digital. Dr. Ehrlich explains:
Patients want the best technology, and I believe digital dentistry is the way
to go. We no longer need impressions or two visits to complete our crowns
and veneers. We simply scan the teeth into a computer, design the restorations in a computer program, and then mill them. It is simple, fast, and
extremely accurate. The best thing is that the patient does NOT have to
come back. No temporary! Done! My favorite cases are our one-day makeovers: veneers in a day!
Digital dentistry also includes techniques for diagnosing: X-rays. Digital x-rays have
come a long way and most dentists are using them, but what makes Dr. Ehrlich stand
apart is that he utilizes three-dimensional x-rays much like a CT scanner. This allows him
to digitally plan dental implants and diagnose tooth problems that are very difficult to see
on traditional x-ray views. He is one of the few general dentists in the US to even have
this capability.
Dr. Ehrlich and his wife Kristine opened their practice in Bee Cave in 2000 when there
was not a lot of activity out here. He explains,I remember driving through the area and
thinking that this would be a great place to live. The day I saw the ground break for the
HEB in Bee Cave, I knew the area was going to explode, and it did! I am glad to call the
area my home and help my neighbors with the highest technology in dentistry.

There was content too hot for TV as eight celebrities battled for the prized

a break from busting bad guys to duke it out for bragging rights. And both Sarah

breast cancer survivors, family members, friends, and community health partners an opportunity to celebrate on September 13 at the Radisson Hotel in Downtown Austin. The focus of
the themed event, A Night in the Roaring 20s, was to honor and celebrate local survivors, co-survivors,
and community partners who provide life-saving services, as well as the over 3 million breast cancer
survivors living in the United States. The party was presented by Texas Breast Specialists and Texas
Oncology and sponsored by First Trust and Charles Maund Toyota. It featured a cocktail reception,
dinner, silent auction, recognition of outstanding volunteers, and special guest speaker, Dr. Michelle
Ashworth of Texas Oncology who spoke about the strides being made against breast cancer. Additionally,

RIENDS, sponsors and Discovery alumni gathered at the Oasis to enjoy a cocktail
reception, sit-down dinner and a widely anticipated sing-off, based on THE VOICE
that featured local contestants and celebrity judges pitted against each other in a
competition called THE VOICE of Discovery. These events were all part of the first annual
fundraiser benefitting Discovery Programs in Austin.
The human potential movement, with its emphasis on self-exploration, exploded across the
U.S. in the 1970s and 1980s and led to the development of large group, life skills training
programs. It was as a participant in such a program in the mid-1990s that David Dachner,
President of Amarado Oil Company, experienced revolutionary changes that reconfigured the
direction of his life. The program he attended owed its inspiration to collaboration and partnership with group life skill training workshops developed by Dr. Phil and Dr. Joe McGraw in the
mid-1980s. Their work laid the foundation for what became Discovery!, a three-part series of
dynamic, interactive training that expands self-awareness and offers both processes to expose
obstacles to growth and tools to enhance sucDavid Dachner and Bob Posey, co-founders cessful living and to empower people to live

Discovery Programs have experienced remarkable growth in Austin, impacting and transforming the lives of over 2,500 participants whose testimonials recount the profound
influence Discovery Programs have had on their personal, professional and spiritual lives.
Discovery Programs are made possible due to the generosity of individuals and companies that provide support through volunteering, donations, and sponsorships. Discovery
has only two paid staff. All of Discovery Programs facilitators, assistants and coordinators
pay it forward by volunteering their time, talent and service because someone else did
that for them.
This very first fundraising event garnered approximately $50,000 in donations that
will be dedicated to Discovery Programs operations.

Dr. Williams emphasized the critical importance of private donations that can be leveraged
to gain a foothold that allows programs in their
infancy to compete for federal grants. Joe Cresco,
a non-smoker and lifelong health enthusiast and
runner, received a Stage 4 small cell lung cancer diagnosis in 2012. He knows that treatment
options are few and that the pioneering research
M.D. Anderson is engaged in is key.

CC4C Micro-Marathon were Mark and Michelle Calaway.
As part of a new program CC4C initiated at the beginning of the 2013-2014
academic year, CC4C children are adopted by and become honorary members
of a high school team or booster club of their choosing. The teams and booster
clubs accept a role as champions for these children and run the Micro-Marathon
in their honor. The teams also invite their children to games and
special events and give them team paraphernalia to symbolize the
special relationship they share. The Lake Travis HS Cavalettes,
Vandergrift HS Lacrosse, Cedar Park HS FFA, Hutto HS Football,
Cedar Park HS Celebrities, Regents HS Football, Hayes HS
Football, Bowie HS Basketball, Anderson HS Drill Team are the
current championing teams for the 20142015 academic year.
The special care and devotion these high school students shower
on their children have a truly magical effect, lifting the spirits of
children whose rare diseases have imposed so much suffering and
misery. In October, Pierce lost his battle with his brain tumor. His
experience at the Micro-Marathon was a highlight that brought
him much joy in his last weeks.
