LA OPININ DE LOS

ADOLESCENTES SOBRE SU ESCUELA

This lecture written by Concepcion Torres, talks about the students point of
view towards their secondary schools. According to her, to be a secondary grade
teacher is a very demanding profession due to the age and stage that the students
go through at this point of their life. Also, every teacher has a different attitude and
mood towards the students, without keeping in mind that they too have complex
homework and work to be done. The students tend to have mood swings that are
very unstable: they might be calm but later they might explode, they can be very
hipper at one moment but then they might fall into depression. The students feel
like they are often treated unfairly, this is because most of the teachers usually go
off on the kids who have no fault. Although, many of the times, most of the
teachers do worry and they try to understand the students so that they can receive
the help they need.
I must say that I do agree with this, as I got to observe how the students and
teachers interacted with each other in a real-world situation. Whenever I went to
observe at Potosinos Ilustres, I got to see how most of the students have these
mood swings, at one moment they were pretty calm and at the next, they were
speaking very rude to their peers and their teachers. Another thing that I could
observe was that only some teachers had the patience to keep the students calm
without having to scream at them or having to go off on them. I also realized that
there are many teachers who do anything when its about helping their students
understand. I saw the Spanish teacher trying to communicate with a deaf student
who did not know what the class was about, so this teacher asked a student to go
look for the special education teacher so that she could translate in sign language
to the student and this way he could understand and they could communicate.
The author collected information from a public morning secondary school
that has second place in the school zone which it belongs to. This school is
focused on the control of the discipline having different types of sanctions to
enforce the discipline. But as the author could see, there were many students who

said that the teachers suspended them for weeks for unreasonable reasons like
laughing during class, or simply because the teachers werent patient enough with
them and they would even call them names and insulted them. Many of the
students said that they did like the school subjects but they dont like how the
teacher handles the class because they always get on to them or even want to
suspend them.
I was able to interview a teacher who was the perfecta of the third grade
students at this school; she is actually a nurse and also studied psychology for six
semesters. She thinks that the students are simply misunderstood by the teachers
and parents. Many of the times they seek our attention, she said, but many of
their teachers dont take the time to see whats behind their attitudes. I believe
this is very true, as teachers we must understand that we are all human beings and
we all go through different stages in life where we need, some more than others,
the help of others. I have realized that in order for the students to learn, they have
to be and feel motivated by their teachers. I got to observe this during the Mexicos
history class; the teacher came in with a positive attitude towards the students and
she began right away with a conversation, the whole time she was very active and
dynamic with the explanation part of the class, and I saw how every student
responded and reacted to her. This compared to the teachers who simply walked
in and wrote their assignments on the board and then sat down during the whole
class period; the students dont seem to feel motivated and so they do nothing but
talk about other things rather than work.
In conclusion, the author gives us things to reflect upon the many aspects
of the schools organization and the various ways of teaching that have influence of
the students learning outcomes. The teachers positive or negative attitude towards
the class reflects upon this as well. We must also keep in mind that other things
like the social-economic context, the family context and the characteristics of the
schools, have a major impact too. As a first step, we must analyze these aspects
so that we can have and give a better education service.
