COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will provide you with specific training on how to apply federal and provincial (Ontario) Environmental
Assessment legislation to proposed projects. Related legislation will be reviewed with you such as the Planning
Act, Environmental Protection Act, etc. and their interrelationships will be explored. The application of case
studies will highlight strategies and nuances of the legislation and give you experience in preparing applications.
Both Individual and Class Environmental Assessments will be addressed.

1. Interpret and apply the Ontario Provincial


Environmental Assessment Legislation and the
Canadian Federal Legislation.

1. Assess various projects and determine which


legislation applies to them.
2. Identify the steps required to complete the
projects.
3. Identify the interrelationship between the Federal
& Provincial legislation and develop strategies for
project management.

2. Identify and address the overlapping of other


legislation into the environmental assessment
area i.e. Planning Act, Environmental Protection
Act, etc.

1. Interpret and apply complementary legislation


when required in assessment projects.

3. Identify projects which fall under the Class EA


process.

1. Assess the nature of projects and determine


which assessment process would apply.

4. Apply the process for Class EAs in Ontario.

1. Develop a terms of reference for a Class EA


project.
2. Design and develop support materials for a
Class EA.
3. Design and conduct an effective open house.

5. Apply strategies for lobbying legislators to


develop and enforce appropriate environmental
regulations, policy, standards (such as for
Greenhouse Gas emissions)

1. Develop plan and presentation outlining need for


regulation and enforcement.
