Jazz at Lincoln Center

Notes on the Program

by Ernesto Lechner
Since the release of her debut album
Ofrenda in 1994, Mexican-American
singer/songwriter Lila Downs has changed
the face of Latin music by fusing Mexicos
authentic folk idioms with a dizzying variety
of genresfrom cumbia and jazz, to rock,
ska, and flamenco. She has recorded collaborations with an endless list of notable
musicians and brought her memorable live
shows to all corners of the globe. But the
Lila Downs that we will see in concert
tonight is also a changed woman, inspired
by a renewed sense of purpose.
Two years ago, Downs husband and longtime musical collaborator, saxophonist Paul
Cohen, was diagnosed with a heart condition. For a moment, his immediate future
appeared altogether uncertain, and this
crisis affected her deeply.
It was like an awakening, admits Lila in
her unmistakable, richly textured voice.
When youre told that your significant
other is going to die, you start wondering
about your path in life, about the things that
really matter. Paul being Jewish, of course,
he started making jokes about it, and me
being Mexican, I joked back, telling him
that if he dies, hes going to come back to
pull our legs and haunt us. But the whole
incident served as inspiration for our new
album, which were recording right now.
Were on a creative roll. Based on Mexicos
Da de los Muertos, the new songs include
some of the jazziest things weve ever
done, while also showcasing the influence
of many different cultures.
One of the reasons Lilas music is so consistently dazzling is that she brings
together many different sonic strands
under the scope of her idiosyncratic personal

vision. And yet, feeling comfortable with

her own identity didnt come easy. Born in
Oaxaca in 1968 to a Mixtec singer and a
British-American professor, Lila grew up
pining to find cultural role models that
would evoke her true essence.
I feel that Ive always been fighting against
the current, she explains. That attitude
has been part of my being in order to survive.
Until I discovered Frida Kahlo, there werent
many images in pop culture that reflected
what I saw when I looked at myself in the
mirror. When I was younger, I didnt like the
men who looked at me as a sensual being. I
wanted to be taken seriously, on the same
level as a man. It was only when I lost the
possibility of being a mother that I discovered the sensuality of being a woman.
Sensuality and passion are key elements in
Lilas performanceswhether shes channeling the golden era of Mexican music
through a devastating reading of the classic
huapango Cucurrucuc Paloma, covering
the 1987 syrupy Los Bukis hit Tu Crcel,
or belting out the brassy, self-penned
anthem Mezcalito. The seven studio
albums she has released to dateincluding
such transcendental sessions as La Cantina
(2006), Shake Away (2008), and Pecados y
Milagros (2011)are regarded as key components in the development of Latin music
during the past two decades. Still, it is in
concert that Downs shines the brightest.
Were like a traveling circus or a touring
jazz band, she says, stressing her words
with an infectious laugh. We feel an actual
need for the one part of the equation that
makes the process of making music more
human: our interaction with the public. Im
always grateful about jazzI see jazz as a
male presence, a father figure. To me, it
sums up the essence of my search, the
philosophy of freedom. And Im committed
to desiring that, to being faithful to it.

Notas Sobre el
Programa
matices. Cuando te dicen que tu ser
querido va a morir, te replanteas las cosas.
Te preguntas qu ests haciendo aqu, qu
es lo que realmente vale la pena. Como
buen judo, Paul empez a hacer chistes. Y

Tuve
paterna. Para m, representa la esencia de
mi bsqueda, la filosofa de mi libertad. Y
estoy dispuesta a querer eso, a serle
siempre fiel.

Meet the Artists

Lila Downs
Lila Downs (Vocals ) has one of the worlds
most singular voices and innovative
approaches to music. She is the daughter of
a Mixtec Indian woman, Anastasia Sanchez
who ran away from her village at age 15
to sing in Mexico City cantinasand a
University of Minnesota professor, Allen
Downs, who saw her singing and fell in love.
Downs grew up both in Minnesota and
Oaxaca, and her music and vocal artistry
have many influences, including the folk
and ranchera music of Mexico and South
America, and American folk, jazz, blues,
and hip-hop. Many of her lyrics focus on
issues related to social justice, and often
tell the stories of the workers who migrate
from rural Mexico to work in the United
States. She studied classical voice and cultural anthropology at the University of
Minnesota. The Mexican American singer
has a stunning voice, a confident multicultural vision grounded in her Mixtec Indian
roots, according to the Los Angeles
Times. Ms. Downs has multiple voices,
from an airborne near-falsetto down to a
forthright alto and a sultry, emotive contralto, says the New York Times.
Downs and her husband, longtime collaborator Paul Cohen, have produced ten studio
albums, with Pecados y Milagros (2012 Sony
Music) having both earned a GRAMMY
and a Latin GRAMMY Award and achieving
double-platinum in sales in Mexico. Downs
received her first Latin GRAMMY Award
for the 2004 release Una Sangre.

In addition to her debut performance at

Jazz at Lincoln Center, Lila Downs has performed at many of the worlds most prestigious festivals and venues, including
Carnegie Hall and the Festival of Sacred
Music at Hollywood Bowl. She has been
invited to sing at the White House and performed on the 75th Annual Academy
Awards and the 2012 Latin GRAMMY
Awards televised ceremonies. Her music
has also been included in feature films
such as The Counselor, Tortilla Soup, Real
Women Have Curves, The Three Burials of
Melquiades Estrada, Carlos Sauras Fados,
Mariachi Gringo, and Hecho en Mexico.
Her current project, RAZ, is a collaboration
with Argentinian singer Soledad Pastorutti
and Spanish flamenco singer La Nia
Pastori. The album has garnered two 2014
Latin GRAMMY Award nominations for
Album of the Year and Best Folk Album.

Paul R. Cohen
Paul R. Cohen (Music Director, Tenor
Saxophone, Clarinet, Composer, Arranger ),
a GRAMMY Awardwinning multiinstrumentalist, composer, arranger, and

majoring in psychology and fine arts.
During the early 1980s he began studying
music and playing saxophone in the band
of the Cirque Baroque in France. In the
1990s he played in dance bands and jazz
ensembles in the city of Oaxaca, Mexico. It
was during this time that he began his
longtime creative collaboration with, and
marriage to, singer/songwriter Lila Downs.
They have since produced 11 studio
albums, garnered two Latin GRAMMY
Awards, one GRAMMY Award, and performed in prestigious venues around the
world, including Carnegie Hall, the

Jazz at Lincoln Centers Live in Cuba Exhibit

On View Now
Free and open to the public during scheduled performances
In celebration of Jazz at Lincoln Centers Jazz Around the Americas season, our
current exhibitLive in Cubatells the story of the Jazz at Lincoln Center
Orchestras week-long residency in Cuba in October, 2010. This historic tour
included five performances at the Teatro Mella in Havana, Cuba, in addition to
educational workshops throughout the country. The exhibit, located on the fifth floor
of Frederick P. Rose Hall, features the photography of Frank Stewart and Ayano
Hisa, plus rare video footage from the tour. In addition to an illustrious and
international career as a professional photographer, Frank Stewart serves as senior
staff photographer for Jazz at Lincoln Center. Ayano Hisa, a 2013 fellow of the New
York Foundation for the Arts, is a freelance photographer whose clients include Jazz
at Lincoln Center, Newport Jazz Festival, and Savannah Music Festival. Please stop
by the free exhibit to learn more!

ROSE THEATER
Brazilian Festival
The Brazilian Duke Ellington
October 24-25 at 8pm
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton
Marsalis performs the music of the late Moacir
Santos, one of Brazils most important musicians and
prolific composers. Melding Afro-Latin influences
with improvisation and jazz harmony helped make
Santos a genuinely original voice in Brazilian music.
As a respected educator, Santos mentored some of
Brazil's most respected artists. Also joining the Jazz
at Lincoln Center Orchestra for this performance is
acclaimed Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista.

THE APPEL ROOM

Anat Cohens Roots of Rio
October 17 at 7pm
October 18 at 9:30pm
Choro, which means to cry in Portuguese, is a
genre often referred to as The New Orleans Jazz of
Brazil. Israeli clarinetist and saxophonist Anat
Cohen leads Choro Aventuroso, a culmination of
both her affinity and intense study of Choro music as
part of an international community of jazz players.
Her group features Vitor Gonalves on accordion and
piano, Cesar Garabini on seven-string guitar, and
Serginho on pandeiro, a Brazilian tambourine. With
traditional instrumentation, Choro Aventuroso will
play waltzes, mazurkas and African-Brazilian rhythms
such as the Lundu, all of which help characterize the
essence of Choro.

Victor Goines Roots of Ragtime

October 17 at 9:30pm
October 18 at 7pm
Saxophonist and clarinetist Victor Goines revisits the
songbooks of Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb, and James
Scott, dubbed the Big Three of ragtime. A gifted
composer and arranger with over 70 original compositions to his credit, Goines has been a member of
the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra since 1993,
always delivering his signature New Orleans-flavored
aesthetic. Goines and his ensemble will explore the

development of ragtime and its subsequent influence

on the evolution of jazz, exemplified by the music of
Jelly Roll Morton. Joining Goines will be guitarist/banjoist James Chirillo, saxophonist Ted Nash, trombonist Chris Crenshaw, trumpeters Marcus Printup
and Kenny Rampton, bassist Yasushi Nakamura,
pianist Chris Pattishall, and drummer Joe Saylor.

Brazilian Festival
SpokFrevo Orquestra
October 24-25 at 7pm & 9:30pm
Historically a folk music associated with Brazilian
Carnival of the Pernambuco region, the brilliance of
frevo lies in its evolution, influenced by religion, elaborate dance, and varied instrumentation. Saxophonist
Inaldo Cavalcante de Albuquerque, also known as
Spok, is considered a frevo maestro with an
adventurous mind. Drawing from the democratic
underpinnings of jazz, Spok uses improvisation as an
exercise in expressing freedom, taking this music
from the streets of Brazil to the international stage.
His 17-member orquestra demonstrates both deeply
traditional roots and explicit jazz elements. Special
guests Melissa Aldana and Wycliffe Gordon join the
orquestra for their Jazz at Lincoln Center debut. A
native of Chile, Aldana is the 2013 Thelonious Monk
International Jazz Saxophone Competition winner,
the first female to take home this prize. Renowned
trombonist and DownBeat poll topper Wycliffe
Gordon, a former member of the Jazz at Lincoln
Center Orchestra, rounds out this performance of our
Brazilian Festival.
