A Gallic Captive
Reading #18
A Gallic captive is brought before the legatus for questioning. The Roman camp is in the wilds of
Belgium, a land of thick forests and fierce tribes. There have been rumors of rebellion against the
Roman army of occupation. The legatus is leading a relief expedition and it is important for him to get
full information concerning the enemy.
LEGATUS: Quid? Num times? Nonne fortis es? Nonne ad mortem paratus? ( The torturing stops;
the Gaul lies exhausted on the ground.)
Quid?
expugnavistis?
GALLUS: Expugnavimus. Magna fuit caedes.
LEGATUS: Per deos immortales!4 Propter injurias agros vestros vastabimus; oppida incendemus;
matres et patres et pueros occidemus!
GALLUS: Milites nostri etiam ad bellum parati sunt. Eos non vincetis.
