GEA Cassette-Geko fan coil unit

Data and Facts

12/1998 (GB)

The GEA Cassette-Geko is a recent

addition to GEAs well-established
product lines for central and
decentralized heating, ventilating and
cooling.
Applications include, for example,
airports, banks, bars, boutiques, coffee
houses, commercial premises,
delicatessen shops, exhibition rooms,
fashion houses, fast-food restaurants,
furniture marts, hotels, industrial
premises, insurance company offices,
post offices, public buildings,
restaurants, retail outlets, shopping
centers, shopping malls, show
rooms, stores and supermarkets.
The GEA Cassette-Geko serves the
following functions:
1.
Cooling using chilled water
2.
Heating using hot water
3.
Filtration
4.
Treated air supply
5.
Air distribution to adjacent rooms
The GEA Cassette-Geko has been
developed for integration in suspended
ceilings featuring 600 x 600 mm (single
unit) or 1,200 x 600 mm (double unit)
panels.
The GEA Cassette-Geko is not suitable
for explosive atmospheres, moist
atmospheres, outdoor installation or
high-dust or corrosive atmospheres. Atmospheres containing dust and/or other
materials producing acidic or alkaline reactions when in contact with water may
be the cause of aluminum fin corrosion
especially in the case of units used for
cooling.
For this reason, units must be protected
against this type of material and filters
must be cleaned or replaced after construction. If necessary, copper/copper
heat exchangers or coated fins must be
specified.
The manufacturer and the seller cannot
be held liable for any defect or damage
attributable to applications for which the
GEA Cassette-Geko is not suitable.

Primary Air Supply

Treated Air Supply:

100

The Cassette-Geko is fitted with inlets for treated air to be

mixed with extract air inside the unit. The single units
feature treated air inlets on three corners ( no inlets on the
fourth corner because of the condensate pump inside the
appliance), while double units are equipped with treated
air inlets on all four corners.

Fig. 12.2

The pressure at the treated air inlets is slightly below

atmospheric pressure. The low pressure should be
disregarded in the design of the treated air system.

Fig. 12.2

Webs
mounting plate
110

75

55

The teated air flow is limited to 20% of the total fan coil
unit air flow at medium speed and 100m3/hr for each
treated air inlet. The height of the treated air inlets
allows the installation of light fixtures in adjacent
suspended ceiling panels. The treated air inlets are
designed for the insertion of standard 110 x 55 mm
rectangular ducts.

air duct

The air ducting is connected quickly and easily.

Follwoing the removal of the blank and the insulation
inside the appliance, the mounting plate is rolled back
and the air duct with ist V-shaped section must be
pushed into the unit (see. Fig. 12.3). The duct is then
fixed to the mounting plate.
Note:
Treated air mixed with the return air must be filtered
and at an appropriate temperature.

Fig. 12.3

12

Air Distribution

Air Distribution:
Two air outlets are provided on the side walls of the fan
coil unit (see Figs. 12 and 17.4 for location and dimensions)
for connection to separate supply air ducting.
They can be used to supply air from the fan coil unit to
distant areas of a room or even to adjacent rooms using
owner provided ducting (e.g. DN 150 ducting). The air
discharge vanes may be open or closed while air is
supplied to other grilles.

Air flow and air pressure at each air grille are, however,
a function of the number of air outlet used.
Air flow rates as a function of pressure loss in the ownerprovided ducting are depicted in Fig. 13.1 and 13.2 for
the maximum fan speed.

*)

According to Fig. 14.2, the increase in level for

three fan coil units is approx. 4.5 dB.

Type of room

The sound pressure levels given in the tables on

pages 4 to 7 and on p. 16 apply for the reverberant
field of a 100 m 3 room and a reverberation time of
0.5 sec.
The sound pressure level at the place of installation
is predicted using the sound power level
expressed in dB(A) and the conversion diagram
given in Fig. 14.4.
Example:
Three model S12 fan coil units are to be installed
in a 20 m x 10 m x 4 m conference room. Fan
operation is to be at speed 2. The resulting sound
power level (see p. 4) is 44 dB(A).
Calculation of Sound Pressure Level:
1. According to Fig. 14.4, the size of the perfectly
absorbing surface is approx. 100 m2 for residential
rooms, offices, hotel rooms and conference rooms
with a volume of 800 m 3
2. The average distance from the fan coil units is
assumed to be 3 m and the directional effect (see
Fig. 14.3) 2. For these conditions, the sound
level difference L = 12 dB, as Fig. 14.4 shows.
3. Accordingly, the A-rated fan coil unit sound
pressure level:
LP = LW - L = 44 dB(A) - 12 dB = 32 dB(A).

= 1 for a surface which absorbs all incident sound energy. The
above values represent ratios between the sound energy actually
absorbed and the sound energy absorbed by a perfectly absorbing
surface. They are averages.
Perfectly absorbing surface m2 (sabin):
Sabin expresses the size of a surface which would absorb all incident
sound energy. This size is not identical with the total room surface.

NR and NC numbers
NR and NC numbers
ISO Noise Criteria Numbers
If a wide frequency range contains high intensity peaks (as in the
case of the noise emitted by a fan), the dB(A) rating (summation
level) is not sufficient to rate the perceived noise level. For this
reason, rating curves (curves of equal nuisance) accounting for
the frequency composition of the noise are used to classify
disturbance.

90

The ISO NR (noise rating) curves depicted in Fig. 15.2 have

become the international standard for rating noise exposure.
The U.S. are the only country where the NC (noise criteria)
curves of Fig. 15.3 are still used.

60

NR 80
70
70

Sound Pressure Level dB

If an NR or NC number is specified for a room, no octave-band

sound pressure level must be in excess of the sound pressure
level given by the curve.

80

The summation level for all eight octave-bands is always 7 to 10

dB above the NR or NC number. For ventilation systems, the
sound pressure level difference averages 5 dB(A) for the different octave-bands and varies from octave-band to octave-band.

ISO Noise Rating Numbers

Example:
Noise emissions are to comply with NR 28 or NC 26.

Fig. 15.2

The base data for the calculation is given in the boxes in the table
on p. 16. To determine the sound pressure level in each octaveband, the sound power levels given for the size 1 single unit for
speed 2 must be tabulated as shown by Fig. 15.1.

The emitted sound pressure level peaks in the 1,000 Hz octave

band at NR 26 or NC 24.
The installation therefore complies with the NR 28 requirement
(as NR 26 is less than NR 28) and the NC 26 requirement (as NC
24 is less than NC 26).

80

70

Sound Pressure Level dB

To obtain the sound pressure levels for the different octavebands, the sound level difference of 12 dB determined in
accordance with Fig. 14.4 on p. 14 must be deducted from the
sound power levels in Fig. 15.1. The octave-band sound pressure
levels obtained are entered into Fig. 15.2 (NR) or Fig. 15.3 (NC).
