The mission of Carolina For the Kids Foundation is to overcome childhood illness by providing major support
for the medical, surgical and emotional care of the patients and families served by UNC Childrens.

Carolina For the Kids Named Outstanding

Philanthropic Organization
BY HALEY WAXMAN, COPY EDIT SUBCHAIR
Carolina For the Kids Foundation was recently awarded the title of
Outstanding Philanthropic Organization by the Triangle Chapter of the
Association of Fundraising Professionals.
Elizabeth Hullender, director of special events at the Ronald McDonald
House of Chapel Hill, said the award celebrates the amazing work that a
corporation, non-profit, religious or other organization is doing to make a
lasting impact on their community, state, nation or world.
Carolina For the Kids exemplifies this through [its] longtime work on
behalf of the children of North Carolina, Hullender said.
She said Carolina FTK was nominated specifically for its support of the
Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill and the Ronald McDonald Family
Room at UNC Childrens.
[Carolina FTKs] support of the capital campaign to expand the Ronald
McDonald House as well as its ongoing support of the Family Room by
providing dinners to families at UNC Childrens makes such a huge impact
on our mission and the families we serve, Hullender said.
Carolina FTK Executive Director Evan Sherwood said this award is
a big step in terms of community recognition and the legitimacy of the
organization.
I am so fortunate to be a part of an organization that is making such a
big impact on the community, Sherwood said. It just makes me happy to
know that people are taking notice of all the hard work that our committee
members, subchairs, Executive Board members, and dancers are putting
into this organization. It takes all of us to make this work.

Dancer Recruitment Week Draws 2,000

BY MARLEIGH CANNON
The first week of November was a very important
time for Carolina For the KidsDancer Recruitment
Week. The week consisted of crazy costumes, impressive
dance moves and music blasting through the Pit, all to
grab the attention of UNCs students and encourage
them to particpate in the 2015 UNC Dance Marathon.
And it worked, as over 1,900 students to signed up to
dance by the end of the week, with registration numbers
now rising to 2,000. Much of the success of DRW is owed
to the Morale & Recruitment Committee for their efforts
in the Pit all week.

We are very excited about the number of people we were

able to sign up, said Executive Director Evan Sherwood.
We had a little bit more of a relaxed atmosphere this year,
which is a welcomed change and I really think it worked to
our advantage.
For the first time, it rained during DRW, but the Morale
Captains were not intimidated. I think the success of
DRW was just a glimpse of what this organization is going
to accomplish this year, said Dancer Coordinator Caitlinn
LaScala.
DRW also aims to show the UNC-Chapel Hill community
how much the cause means to members of the organization.
The event is something I look forward to all year, said
fourth-year dancer and Community Outreach Committee
Subchair Peter Carter. The friendships I have made through
this organization will last throughout life, and I could not be
more proud of the work [everyone] puts forth to make this
event so successful.
Jean-Luc Rivera, Morale & Recruitment chair, said, I know
that me taking a stand for 24 hours can have a huge impact
on the life of a family at UNC Childrens. I dance because it
can help a child be exactly thata child.

No Spooks, Only Smiles: Halloween With CFTK

BY HALEY WAXMAN, COPY EDIT SUBCHAIR

While Halloween is a time of spooks and spirits for

some, its a time of spreading smiles for Carolina For the
Kids. Every year, Carolina FTK participates in a variety
of Halloween-themed events, namely Trick-or-Treat For
Kids Who Cant and Halloween at the Hospital.
Halloween at the Hospital takes place on Halloween
in the pediatric playroom at UNC Childrens. Hospital
Chair Shakeia Burgin said the purpose of the event is
to give the kids in the hospital the chance to participate
in fun Halloween activities just as they would if they
werent hospitalized.
We try to make this event as exciting and interactive
as possible by dressing up, giving the kids a chance to
make their own costumes, face painting and having all
sorts of decorations, she said.
Hospital Committee member Victoria Baskett said
she wanted to participate in Halloween at the Hospital
since Halloween was one of her favorite days as a child
because she got to dress up as anything she wanted to
be.
Baskett said the event at the hospital embodies
Carolina FTKs mission of brightening the days of
patients and families of UNC Childrens. By doing
Halloween at the Hospital we provided children a

chance to be kids and parents a chance to sit back and

smile, she said. Thats what its all about.
Trick-or-Treat For Kids Who Cant is a yearly event
in which committee members have the opportunity to
dress up in Halloween costumes and go out into the
Chapel Hill community to ask for donations on behalf of
the kids who are patients at UNC Childrens.
This year, the event raised $4,627.69 in just two
days. Finance Chair Landon Sherwood said Carolina
FTK does this event annually because it shows the
local community that patients at UNC Childrens do not
get the chance to partake in the milestone of trick-ortreating when they are in the hospital. This event gives
us a fun opportunity to tell the community the ways we
support these children every day in order for them to
enjoy being kids, he said.
Donor Development Committee member Jessica
Amberg participated in Trick-or-Treat For Kids Who Cant
for the first time this year. I participated in Trick-orTreat For Kids Who Cant because I always loved trickor-treating as a kid and I hope that all of the kids at UNC
Childrens get the opportunity to trick-or-treat, she said.
Its for a great cause and I thought it would be a fun way
to help raise money for Carolina FTK.

The Embers Featuring Craig

Woolard Play 10th Annual Concert
BY HANNAH SHAW
For the tenth consecutive year,
UNC students and Chapel Hill
residents filled Pantana Bobs to
capacity for a Carolina For the Kids
benefit night with The Embers
Featuring Craig Woolard on Oct. 30.
Admission into the event was
only $3 for people over 21 and $6
for those under, a price many were
willing to pay in order to hear the
popular North Carolina beach music
band.
Campus Fundraising Chair Kari
Beasley said that Bobs usually
charges cover on busy nights, but
people were excited to pay the cover
since it benefited the hospital and
allowed them to hear the band.
[The Band] is one of the best
beach music bands in the state. They
are a well-known and distinguished

band, Beasley said.

Among the 300 people that
attended the benefit night was
senior Hayley Witt. Witt said although
shes not involved with Carolina FTK
herself, she has many friends who
are involved and encourage her to
come to the different benefit nights.
I had a lot of fun, Witt said.
I liked the more laid back atmosphere
and pretending like I knew how to do
any kind of shag dancing.
This year, the event was sponsored
by several Greek organizations,
including Delta Kappa Epsilon, Phi
Mu, Delta Upsilon, and Kappa Delta.
Each organization contributed at
least $400 to the cause. Beasley
said that the event was even more
successful because of the Greek
sponsors.

To me, FTK is about fighting for the kids who
need an extra person in their corner, whether
that is telling them a joke to get a smile out of
them or giving them the opportunity to be with
their family in their hardest times.
I think the new name offers endless
possibilities. I see so many opportunities for
everyone involved to come together through
the kids and through every part of the
organization being devoted to For the Kids.
Claire Porter
Production Coordinator Subchair, Entertainment Committee
To me FTK reminds me exactly who I
work and stand for. Every year having the
opportunity to meet the families and patients
we help and see the smiling faces of the
kid co-captains embodies exactly what this
organization stands for and why I am proud
to be a part of it. We help make those smiles
happen and we give kids the chance to be kids
and have fun which is exactly what For The
Kids means.

For the Kids Story

Byron is a 14-year-old boy who came to UNC
Hospitals with liver failure and received a liver
transplant. His mother was not able to work
since Byron became ill. He had a slow recovery,
spending several months in and out of intensive
care. The For the Kids Fund helped with the
cost of food and provided phone cards to help
stay in touch with friends and family. Following
his transplantation, Byron had a suppressed
immune system and needed to be in a clean
environment. The liver transplant fund was able
to contribute money toward a new mattress
and box spring. The For the Kids Fund paid the
remainder of the bill, giving Byron a new, clean,
comfortable bed for his stay at home.
