Start Date (dd-mm-yyyy)

: 01-07-2007

End date (dd-mm-yyyy)

: 30-06-2008

Objective(s) of Research :
To get information and to estimate the rice bran available in the rice mill
Methodology :
A short survey programme was undertaken to know the rice bran availability in some selected rice mills, feed mill and the
Ministry of Food, Government of Bangladesh. Based on the information, an estimate of bran availability was prepared.
Abstract/ Executive Summary :
The prospects of rice bran oil industry in Bangladesh need to be studied. Rice bran should be sent to oil extraction mill
immediately after bran production from rice mill. Otherwise the quality of oil would be deteriorated due to the hydrolysis activity
of enzyme retained in bran.

Detail Report
Project Title : Present status of rice bran in Bangladesh
There was no statistical data on number of rice mill in Bangladesh. However, DG Food of GoB has listed down some rice mill
from where GOB procures rice. A total number of 25,595 rice mills were licensed by the DG Food in 2005. There were a large
number of rice mill existing in Bangladesh out of list of DG Food. The study shows that there were about 6101 number of rice
mills in few selected areas of Bangladesh. More than 4600 rice mills were found only in Dinajpur region. Since there was no
statistical survey, therefore, at this stage it was very difficult to estimate the total number of rice mill in Bangladesh. However,
based on a sample survey of 50 number of rice mills, it was estimated that the average milling capacity of rice mill was 9 t/batch
(ranging 2.35 ton to 22.5 ton per batch). Average processing period of a batch was 3 days and annually 100 batches could be
processed by a rice mill. Of the total paddy produced nationally, 30% was processed by households and do not enter to the
market. Another 70% of the total paddy was processed in different type of medium to large rice mills reported by Dasgupta
(2001). There were about 35000 different types of medium to large rice mills in Bangladesh. There should be a through study on
the feasibility of rice bran oil industry in Bangladesh. Bangladesh should have rice processing zone/park for better
transportation of rice bran to the bran oil industry.
