Methodology

Design
This research paper compares the mindset of BSA students from De La Salle University who
were able to pass and students who had to repeat ACTBAS1. With this objective, the researchers
were able to develop the questionnaire last October 5, 2014. The information asked from the
respondents were their age, gender, grade in ACTBAS1, their decision to shift to another
program or to stay including the reasons, the reason why they took up accounting in De La Salle
University and their feeling about the grade they received. Each question in the questionnaire
included different choices in which the respondents could choose their answer from. If their
answer was not included in the choices, the researchers included another option which was
others where they could write their own answer.
Respondents/ participants

Out of the more than 200 first year BSA students, we were only able to get more or less half the
population. This sample size is still insufficient to prove the definite mindset of the students who
were able to reach the required grade and those who were not able to reach the required grade in
ACTBAS1 among the first year BSA students in De La Salle University. The conclusion from
the research is only preliminary. Furthermore, this research is only applicable to students in De
La Salle University freshmen who are currently under the BSA program. Hence, it may not apply
to students in another university or course.

Instruments

The researchers tallied the respondents answers to find the most common reason for shifting to
another program, staying in the BSA program, taking up BSA in De la Salle University and the
most common feeling of students when they receive their grade in ACTBAS1. Furthermore, the
researchers used pearsons r correlation method, a statistical technique to show the relation
between two variables, to find out if there is a strong relationship between gender and the grade
received by the student in ACTBAS1, the age and grade received by the student in ACTBAS1,
and the decision of the student to shift to another program and the grade received. To be able to
compute for the correlation of the two different variables, the researchers assigned numbers to
the answers of the respondents in the different questions. For the question about the gender, we
assigned the number 20 for female and 30 for male. Also, for the question regarding the decision
of the respondent to shift, the researchers assigned the number four for yes and the number two
for no. We will be using Pearsons equivalence table to interpret the results of the correlation.

Data gathering procedure

On October 13 2014, the researchers posted an online survey using Google Docs. On the next
day, 80 pieces of the survey were distributed to students from different BSA block sections who
failed to reach the required grade in ACTBAS1. The researches were only able to retrieve 55
surveys on October 19, 2014. On October 22, the researchers decided to further improve the
study by comparing the mindset and feeling of the students who passed ACTBAS1 to those who

failed to reach the required grade. With this, the researchers decided to revise the survey by
adding more choices.

After topic revision, the researchers distributed the questionnaires for the students who were able
to reach the required grade in ACTBAS1 to the different first year BSA block sections namely,
block 1, block 2, block 3, block 4, block 5 and block 6 on October 27, 2014. The researchers
were able to receive 46 surveys on November 3, 2014. In addition to this, the researchers
retrieved 21 responses from the online survey on November 4 2014.

The total number of respondents was 122. Out of this, half of the respondents reached the
required grade in ACTBAS1 while the other half failed to reach the required grade in
ACTBAS1. This was done to ensure comparability between passers and repeaters.
