EL-403 POWER SYSTEM

SECTION B

Example: A steam power station of 100MW capacity uses coal of calorific value of 6400 kcal/kg. The thermal
efficiency of the station is 30% and electrical generation efficiency is 92%. Determine the coal required per hour
when the plant is working at full load.
(A. M. I. E. Sec. B. Power System Winter 1996)
Solution: Overall efficiency of power station
= Thermal efficiency electrical efficiency
= 0.30 0.92 = 0.276
Unit generated per hour at full rated output = 100 1000 kHz
Heat produced per hour =

311.6 106 kcals.

Coal consumption per hour = heat produced per hour/ calorific value of coal
=

= 48,687.00 kg = 48.687 tonnes Ans.
