This is a legal agreement between you (the customer) and Cambridge University Press (the publisher) for
Touchstone TestCrafter.
1. Limited license

 ou are purchasing only the right to use the CD-ROM and are acquiring no rights, express or implied, to the software itself,
or the enclosed copy, other than those rights granted in this limited license for educational use only.

this CD-ROM on a single computer. You may not install the software on this CD-ROM on a single secure network server for
access from one site.

Welcome to TestCrafter
TestCrafter is easy-to-use software that allows teachers to create, edit, administer online, or print tests
for any level of Touchstone. Teachers can choose how many and which questions to include, drawing
from a bank of more than 2,000 questions. An audio CD containing the listening sections of the tests
is included in the package. The audio program is also available in MP3 format on the CD-ROM.

3. Liability
The CD-ROM is supplied as-is with no express guarantee as to its suitability. To the extent permitted by applicable law, the
publisher is not liable for costs of procurement of substitute products, damages or losses of any kind whatsoever resulting
from the use of this product, or errors or faults in the CD-ROM, and in every case the publishers liability shall be limited to the
suggested list price or the amount actually paid by the customer for the product, whichever is lower.

How to Install TestCrafter Teacher

Logging In

For Windows

n Enter your first name, last name, and password. Then click on Log in.

The TestCrafter CD-ROM needs to be in the CD-ROM drive for the application to work.

1. Insert the TestCrafter CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the installation starts automatically,
go to step 4. If the installation does not start by itself, go to step 2.
2. Double-click on My Computer on your desktop or select My Computer from the Start menu.
3. Next, double-click on the CD-ROM icon (Touchstone TestCrafter).
4. A dialog box will ask if you want to install the application. Click on OK, and follow the
instructions to complete the installation process.
5. A program folder and a desktop shortcut will be created.

You will need to log in on the first screen.

n If this is your first time logging in, click on Click here if you are a new user. Enter your first name,
last name, and e-mail address. Enter a new password of your choice, and enter it again in Confirm
password. Then click on Log in.
n Check the box next to Remember my password if you want the program to remember you. The next
time you open the program, you will not have to log in.
n If you forget your password, click on Forgot password? Your password will be sent to the e-mail
address you entered for your account.

Uninstalling the software


To uninstall TestCrafter, go to the Start menu. Choose All Programs, then Touchstone TestCrafter.
Click on Remove Touchstone TestCrafter. You will also need to manually delete any saved tests.

For Macintosh
1. Insert the TestCrafter CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. On most computers the CD-ROM
folder will open automatically. If it doesnt open by itself, double-click on the CD-ROM icon
(Touchstone TestCrafter Teacher) on your desktop.
2. Drag the Touchstone TestCrafter Install folder to the Applications folder.
3. Open the Applications folder.
4. Open the Touchstone TestCrafter Install folder.
5. Double-click on the Touchstone TestCrafter program icon to start the application.

Uninstalling the software


To uninstall TestCrafter, delete the program folder from your Applications folder. You will also need to
manually delete any saved tests.

Instant Test

Look at the main menu screen. TestCrafter gives you four options:

To select a ready-made test, click on Choose a test in the main menu. You will then see the screen below.
1. Choose a level of Touchstone.

 hoose one or more units. The About this test box shows how many of each type of question
are included in the test.

Click on Choose a test to select a ready-made Touchstone test.

3. A fter you have chosen the level and units you want, click on Preview or edit the test, go
straight to Finish and click on Print options to print the test, or click on Online options to
administer the test online.

n Click on Make a new test to create a new test from existing questions.
n Click on Open my saved test to modify a test you have already created.

n Click on Add questions to add your own questions to the TestCrafter question bank.
n Click on Edit questions to edit existing questions.

n Click on Manage classes and tests to administer tests online.

removed from the test but remain in the question bank. Deleted questions cannot be restored to
a test once you have saved the test.

Instant Test.

 lick on Done after you have finished making any changes.

Scrambled versions have the same questions as the original Instant Test, but in a different order.

Build a Test

Specifying the number of questions on the test

Make a new test


To create a new test, click on Make a new test in the main menu. You will then see the screen below.
1. Choose a level of Touchstone.
2. Choose one or more units.
3. Choose which skill or skills you want to test. Note: Only questions from the skill(s)
you select will appear on your test.
4. There are three options for specifying the number of questions that will appear on the test.
These options are described in detail on pages 911.

To specify how many questions to include for each skill


n Choose Id like to specify how many questions to include for each skill. Then click on Next
step. You will then see a screen like the one below.
n Click on the first button to specify the total number of questions for the test.
n Click on the second button to specify the number of questions for each skill.

n Click on Preview or edit the test to view the contents of the test or to delete questions
from the test.
n Click on Go to print options to print or Go to online options to administer the test online.

To use all the available questions for the test

n Choose Id like to choose specific questions to include on the test. Then click on Next step.
You will then see a screen like the one below. It shows all the questions that are available.

n Choose Id like to use all the available questions for the test. The test will contain all of
the questions that are available for that test, including any questions you have added.

n Select the questions you want to include. Note: Clicking on a question that has a title and is part
of a group selects all the questions in that group. You can then deselect individual questions
from that group if you do not want to include them.

n Click on Next step. An Output test dialog box will appear.


n Click on Print to print the test. (See page 7 for details.)
n Click on Upload to administer the test online. (See pages 1931 for details.)

Open my saved test


To open a saved test, click on Open my saved test in the main menu.
n Click on Edit to edit the test. (See page 10 for details.)
n Click on Print/Upload to print or administer the test online.

n Click on any line in the Title column to see the complete title of a group of questions.
A pop-up window with the complete text will open.
n Click on any line in the Question text column to see the full text of that question. A pop-up
window with the complete text will open.
n Click on Preview or edit the test to view the contents of the test or delete questions from the test.
n Click on Go to print options to print or Go to online options to administer the test online.

Question Bank
Add questions

Question Editor
There are two fields in the Question Editor window that you can use for any question type.
nS
 elect a title Titles are used to group questions. You can select an existing title if you want
to add a new question to an existing group. You can also enter a new title if you want to create
a new group of questions.

TestCrafter allows you to create your own questions which can then be included in the tests you create.
To create your own questions, click on Add questions in the main menu.

n Instructions The instructions will automatically appear in the Instructions box if you are
adding a question to an existing group. For new groups of questions, type in the instructions.
(For example, Select the correct answers to the following questions.)

1. Choose a level of Touchstone.


2. Choose a unit.
3. Choose a skill.
4. Choose the type of question you want to include. You can select multiple-choice,
fill-in-the-blank, or matching questions.

n For questions that can include art, an Art file field will be displayed.
n Click on Browse to include the art. Select the piece of art you want to use from your computer.

5. Click on New question. A Question Editor window like the one below will open.

n Click on

to see what the art file looks like.

Reading
n For reading questions, a Reading field will be displayed.
n Type or paste a reading directly into that field.

Listening
n For listening questions, an Audio file field will be displayed.
n Click on Browse to include the audio. Select the audio file you want to use from your computer.
n Type or paste the audio script into the Audio script box.

Multiple-choice questions

Fill-in-the-blank questions

n Enter a question and up to five answer choices.

n Select or enter a title, instructions, and an art file (if you want). See page 13 for details.

n Mark the correct answer by clicking on the button to the left of it.

n Enter the sentence in the Question box.

n When you have finished entering the question, click on Save.

n Click on Add blank to insert a blank into the sentence. Note: You can insert multiple blanks
into a sentence.

n To add another question to the same group of questions, click on Add new question.
The Question and Choices fields will become blank. Then type in a new question and set
of choices. Note: You must click on Save before adding a new question.
n When you have finished, click on Close to close the editing window.

n Click on Next step. The blank will change to a box.

Including art in a question or an answer

n Enter the correct answer in the box. Then click on Next step again.

You can also choose a piece of art for a question or an answer choice.

n A new screen will appear. This screen will let you enter any alternate answers that could
be accepted as correct.

n Click in the Question or the Choices field.


n Click on the folder icon next to Question or Choices and locate the picture you want.
n Click on

n Click on Save, then click on Close.

n Highlight the text you want to format.
n Click on the formatting icons for bold, italic, underlined, or plain text.

Matching questions

n Select or enter a title, instructions, and an art file (if you want). See page 13 for details.

TestCrafter allows you to make changes to any question in TestCrafter.

n Enter up to 10 words or phrases in the left-hand column.

To edit questions, click on Edit questions in the main menu.

n Enter the correct match for each item in the right-hand column. Note: You can use the same
item in the right-hand column more than once, but it must be entered every time it matches
an item in the left-hand column.

1. Choose a level of Touchstone.


2. Choose one or more units.
3. Choose one or more skills.

4. Choose the type of question you want to edit.

You can also choose a piece of art for a question or an answer choice.

5. Click on Find questions. You will then see a screen like the one below. It shows all of the
questions that match your selections. Note: If you do not make any selections in steps 3 and 4
above, TestCrafter will use all of the questions for the level and unit you have chosen.

n Click in a question or an answer field.


n Click on the folder icon and locate the picture you want. Click on
the art file looks like.

n When you have finished entering all of the items in both columns, click on Save, then click on Close.

The list displays the Skill, Level, Unit, Question type, Title, the first words of the Question text, and a
button for editing each question .

Question Editor
n Click on
to open the Question Editor and make changes to a question. Note: If you make
changes to a question from an original Instant Test, you can only click on Save as to save it
as a new question. TestCrafter will keep the original question.
n Click on
to delete a question from the question bank. The question will be completely
removed from the question bank. Note: Only questions you have added can be deleted.
TestCrafter will not delete original Instant Test questions.

Online Testing

Uploading and assigning tests


TestCrafter allows you to administer tests to your students using the Internet. After you have selected an
Instant Test or made your own test, you can upload and assign the test for your students to take on their
own computers. You must be connected to the Internet to upload and assign a test.

Optional settings

Before you upload and assign a test, you can choose optional settings on the Online options screen:

 rotect this test with a password. You will need to give this password to your students so they
can download and take the test. You should explain to your students that this test password is
different from the personal password they enter to log in to TestCrafter.
nS
 et a time limit for this test. Your students have to complete the test within this time limit.

 et a due date for this test. After the due date, your students will not be able to download,
take, or submit the test. This date is in date-month-year format.

Saving a TestCrafter file


1. Type in a name in the Test name field.

n L imit the number of times Listening recordings can be played when taking this test.

2. Click on Save TestCrafter file. You will see a dialog box. Click on OK to save the file.

nC
 reate scrambled versions of the test. You can select how many scrambled versions of
the test you want to upload and assign. The scrambled versions have the same questions as
the original test, but the skills being tested, and the questions within those skills, appear in a
different order on each scrambled test. If you select this option, each student who downloads
and takes the test will be randomly assigned a different scrambled version.

3. Choose where on your computer to save the TestCrafter file, then click on Save. You will then
see a dialog box confirming that the TestCrafter file has been saved.

Uploading and assigning your test

Saved TestCrafter files can only be opened by selecting Open my saved test from the main menu. Tests
can then be edited, printed, or uploaded and assigned to a class.

Previewing an online test


1. Click on Preview test.

Use the Select class... drop-down menu to select an existing class, or click on New to create a new
class (see page 24 for information on adding a new class). Then click on Upload and assign test. You
will see a dialog box confirming that the test has been uploaded and that e-mails about the test will be
sent to students in that classs student roster.

2. T estCrafter Student will open and you will be able to see the test as it will appear for
your students.

n If there are no students in the roster yet, you must notify students of the test yourself (see page
24 for information on adding students to the student roster).
n If you protected the test with a password or set a due date, you will need to send that
information to your students.
n If you get a message that your test has not been uploaded successfully, make sure that your
computer is connected to the Internet, then click on Upload and assign test again.

Managing classes and tests


Click on Manage classes and tests in the main menu to create and edit student rosters, grade tests,
and edit class and test information.

Editing and deleting information


Click on Edit teacher/class information to update your own and your class information. You will then
see a screen like the one below.

n Use the Select class . . . drop-down menu to select an existing class, or select New to create
a class.

n You can edit your own name, e-mail address, or password.

n Once you have selected a class, the box at the left of the screen will update to display the Class
ID, Class average, and breakdowns of Average by skill.

n You can also select a class and click on Export to Excel to export the classs test and student
information to Microsoft Excel.

n You will also see the Student roster for that class. Click on the Test roster tab to view the Test
roster instead.

n Select a class and click on Delete class to delete that class. Deleting a class removes all test
and student information related to that class. When you click on Delete class, you will have
three options:

n Click on Add class to create a new class or Edit class to change the name of an existing class.

Click on Delete to delete that class without exporting any information about it.
Click on Export/Delete to export the class information to Excel and then delete the class.
Click on Cancel to continue without deleting the class.

You can add a new class on the Online


options screen, the Manage classes and
tests screen, or the Edit teacher/class
information screen.

The Student roster displays a list of the students in your class.


n You can see each students Name as well as his or her Average for all tests submitted.
n Click on

in the Delete column to delete that student from the Student roster.

n If you need to add a student to your class in this menu, click on Add student. Enter the students
name and e-mail address, as well as a temporary password. You must provide this temporary
password to the student.

n When you add a new class,


TestCrafter will automatically assign
a Class ID to your class. Your
students will need this Class ID to
access your tests.

Note: Every time you add new students to the Student roster, you need to tell them to download
the TestCrafter Student program, if they havent already done so, and tell them the Class ID.
The Class information dialog box (see page 24 for details) will appear for you to copy the text.

n To export the information in the Student roster to Excel, click on Export to Excel.

Adding a new student


There are two ways to add a student to the student roster:
n (Recommended) You can give all the students in your class the text in the Class information
dialog box, including the Class ID. The first time they log in to TestCrafter, they add themselves to
the student roster and create their own password (see page 30 for details).
n You can add a student on the Manage classes and tests screen. You will need to assign a
temporary password to each student, which he or she will need to log in to TestCrafter Student
(see page 30 for details).

Test roster

Click on a students name in the Student roster to view his or her details. You will then see a screen
like the one below.

The Test roster displays a list of all the tests assigned to a class and their status.
n The Grading status column indicates whether a test has been graded or not.

n You can edit your students name and e-mail address, and view and edit scores of tests assigned
to your student.

Click on Grade now to grade a test for the first time.


Click on Grade again to see if more students have submitted a test and to grade
it again, if desired.

n Click on View to view the students score report for a given test.
n Click on Send to send the score report and graded test to the student. After you have sent a
score report once, click on Send again to send it again, if needed.

n The Class average column shows the class average for each test.

n If you make any changes on the Student details screen, click on Save to save your changes or
Close to close the window without saving any changes.

n To unassign a test for a given class, click

n You can also view each tests Due date (if you had set one).

When you click on a test name, you will see a screen like the one below.
n You can view the tests password, due date (if you had set one), and a list of students who have
submitted their test and their scores.
n If you make any changes on the Test details screen, click on Save to save your changes or
Close to close the window without saving any changes.

TestCrafter Student
After you have created a new class and sent your students an e-mail message or a printed document
with text from the Class information dialog box (see page 24 for details), including the Class ID, they
will be ready to download the TestCrafter Student program.
n When your students go to www.cambridge.org/testcrafter for the first time, they will see the
TestCrafter Student screen below.
n Your students should click on Download TestCrafter to download either the Windows or Mac
version of the program.

Once the program has downloaded to your students computers, they will see the screen below.
Students will be prompted to enter their first name, last name, Class ID, password, and e-mail address.
Then they should click Log in.

When students have logged in, they will see a screen like the one below.
n Students can view the tests they have been assigned, their due dates, status, and the dates they
submitted them.

n If you have added your students to the Student roster, they will need to enter the temporary
password you have assigned them (see page 24 for details).

n Students can click on a test to access it.


n If your students are in more than one class, they can click on See tests for a different class.
They will need to enter the Class ID for another class.

n If you have not added your students to the Student roster, they can add themselves by creating
their own passwords. They will receive an e-mail message confirming their password. They
should keep this message for future reference.
