Text: There is no prescribed text book for this course. Suggested references:

1. Computer Networks: A systems approach. Peterson and Davie, Morgan


Kaufman, 3rd Edition.
2. Numerous IETF documents. (References will be provided throughout the
semester.)
3. Technical articles from conferences and journals. (References will be provided
throughout the semester.)

Quizzes: There will be four quizzes (closed notes and book) in the class on February 2,
February 28, April 4, and April 25. These will be short quizzes and will be no more than
15 minutes in duration. Best 3 quizzes will count towards the grade. (I will drop the
lowest score.) All quizzes will be given in the first 15 minutes of the class.

Exams: There will be two exams---Exam I on March 2 and Exam II on April 29 (at 2
pm). The quizzes and exams are closed book, closed notes. All exams will be in the
regularly scheduled class room.

Projects: There will be research and/or programming projects in the class. Knowledge of
C and Unix is needed. Details will be provided later.

Additional Meetings: In addition to the regularly scheduled class meetings, I may


announce review sessions for the exams and project if there is sufficient demand. Please
check this web site for details.

Grading:
Exams: Exam I: 25% Exam II: 25%
Quizzes: 5% each. (Best 3 out of the four; I will drop your lowest score.)
Project: 35%

Note that doing well in each of the three components (Exams, Quizzes and Project) is
required for an A or a B grade.

Objective of the course: To give the student ideas and insights on important design
issues associated with advanced computer networks. Topics to be discussed include (1)
Routing and Transport Protocols, (2) Quality of Service, (3) Mobile IP/Wireless Data, (4)
IPv6, (5) MPLS, (6) Voice over IP, and (7) Recent research topics.

Use of WebCT: I will use WebCT extensively to communicate with you regarding this
course. Please use it regularly.

Warning: Unless otherwise explicitly specified by me in writing, all work submitted for
credit must be done individually by each student. No cooperation, in any form, is
allowed. Any deviation from this rule with result in disciplinary action.

Prerequisites: The prerequisites for this course are (1) CS 5390 and (2) working
knowledge of C and Unix. You must satisfy these prerequisites to be in this class.
