SWITCHES
A switch consists of many high-speed ports connecting either LAN segments or individual
devices on a port-by-port basis, supporting different speeds and LAN types.

DISADVANTAGES :
NO ROUTING
Only a D-Link router can route protocols. The switch cannot route protocols, which means you
cannot segment your network. Routers let you create segments and the router handles directing
the communication across the network. Switches help amplify traffic signals, but they do not
route traffic, so your IP addresses must all be on the same subnet.
FILTERING MULTICAST BROADCASTING
D-Link routers filter out the broadcasting of communication across the network. Broadcasting is
a type of communication where a computer broadcasts your message to all computers on the
subnet. It causes bottlenecks on large networks with several computers. Routers block
broadcasting and instead keep all communication on the subnet without slowing communication.
PROTECTION AGAINST HACKERS
D-Link routers have firewall software included with the device. Firewall software protects your
internal network from hackers accessing the network from the Internet. A D-Link switch has no
firewall capabilities, so it cannot help protect you from hacker attempts. Some companies use a
D-Link router with a switch to protect against hackers.
NO VPN SUPPORT
No Virtual Private Networking (VPN) support is included with a D-Link switch. A VPN allows a
user on the Internet to connect to your network. The router asks for a user name and password
before the user can access the network. Switches do not have these capabilities, so you must have
a D-Link router to offer VPN support.

ROUTER
A router operates at the Network Layer of the OSI reference model, distinguishing between
Network Layer protocols. Routers are protocol dependent. They can interconnect networks that
have different lower level architectures.

The additional software processing performed by a router can increase packet latency,
reducing the routers performance when compared to simpler switch architecture.

To be routable an architecture must have a Network Layer. Not all do; those protocols
must be bridged.Unroutable protocols include DEC-LAT terminal communications
protocol, IBMs SNA, and NetBIOS/NETBEUI.

DATA CLOSETS
The properties of the data closets is
Room temperature are kept between 5-15 Celsius
Relative humidity between 30% and 50%
No fluorescent lighting
More than 3 feet of space behind data racks
Fire suppression
The 10000 G2 Series Rack includes cooling and cable management. Front and rear door handles
provide easy access while lock bars provide added security.

BANDWIDTH

Currently SolidVPN have 50MB bandwidth. In order for all Internet traffic to be
managed in one place, Internet access, provided by Comcast. Meanwhile the switches
will support 1GB backbone.

WIRELESS

The controller manages the channels for the wireless connections in each department.
Access Points are located in each level, workroom, project room, and are connected to
the IDF via cat6 cables. Additionally, SolidVPN use Aruba AP60 acces. The price for
these access points is very competitive.

ONE INTERMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION FACILITY (IDF)

One Intermediate Distribution Facility (IDF) are placed in the middle on the each of each
level of the building.
