Montage
Desciption: A motivational montage using 2 or more images
and using typography

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop

Date: October 25, 2014
Course # and Section: Comm 130 Section 5
Instructor: Joel Judkins
Objective: Learn to blend two or more images together gradually,
using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with
multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size.

Process: I first selected my images from the internet. I added masks

to the images of the constitution and map of America. I blended both of

these images so they didnt take away from the main painting but still had
a soft presence in the sky. I chose the font of the title to match the time
period and the text in the constitution. I added quotations to the body
copy to show that it is a direct quote from George Washington.

Brochure
Desciption: A double sided 3 fold brochure
Programs Used: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop
and Adobe Illustrator

Date: December 6, 2014

Course # and Section: Comm 130 Section 5
Instructor:Joel Judkins
Objective: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs,

headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process: The first thing I did for this project is figure out my

dimensions and how it would all fold. This was a complicated process. I
had to create drafts on paper so I could see it in 3D and understand how it
works. Once I had my dimensions and all my measurements aligned I then
began to start designing it in Adobe InDesign.
I created the logo for the university in Adobe Illustrator and brought that
into InDesign. All of the images I got from the internet and I put them into
Adobe Photoshop so they wouldnt be so pixelated once I printed it. I also
used text wrap to move my text around the images and other
headings I used.

Business Card
Desciption: A business letter head with matching business cards
Programs Used:Adobe Indesign, Adobe Illustrator
Date: November 7, 2014
Course # and Section: Comm 130 Section 5
Instructor: Joel Judkins
Objective: Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate

existing logos or use previous designs.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead. Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty
of white space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, and email on each
piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number;
no parentheses/ hyphens

Process: First I overlapped two circles, I then used the pathfinder

tool to separate the circles into different shapes. I then moved them into
the shape that it is now. I also designed the business card shape in
illustrator and the rest I did in Adobe InDesign. I also added a fade from
the center of the business card to give it more warmth and interest.

Letterhead

Desciption: A business letter head with matching business cards

Programs Used:Adobe Indesign, Adobe Illustrator
Date:November 7, 2014
Course # and Section: Comm 130 Section 5
Instructor: Joel Judkins
Objective: Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate

existing logos or use previous designs.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim
only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2. Apply typography rules,
keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty
of white space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, and email on each
piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number;
no parentheses/ hyphens

Process: I created the letterhead by first bringing in the logo I

created. I made one of them larger and added transparency so it would

be a watermark. I then created lines for where the letter would stop and
end. The last thing was that I added the contact information.

Website
Desciption: A web page designed to showcase a personally
designed logo.

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator, HTML and CSS

Date: November 20, 2014
Course # and Section: Comm 130 Section 5
Instructor: Joel Judkins
Objective: Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web
page so the long side is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it
appeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale
for colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,)
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML.
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.

Process: The first part was creating the outline of the webpage. I did
this with Text Wrangler as an html document. For the background I used
Adobe Illustrator to create it. I then used my logo and created it as a
watermark and repeated it overtop of the collage. I then linked that into
my css document. For the title font I pulled it from the internet and linked
the web page into my html and then put it in my css. That way no matter
what devise is used the text will be the same.

Photodesign

Desciption: Design an original photo using a specific color

scheme and demonstrate effective editing skills using Adobe Photoshop.

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop

Date: October 15, 2015
Course # and Section: Comm 130 Section 5
Instructor: Joel Judkins
Objective: Learn basic photography skills.

Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then

incorporate the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate
layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.

Process: I first chose to use a photo taken at night of the streets of

Rexburg. The color scheme was analogous as the street lamps cast their
lights on the street. I used a Canon D3i to capture this picture. In
Photoshop I used certain editing techniques such as using layers, selective
color enhancements and using greater vibrance and saturation. The
picture itself was already interesting but with the color enhancements it
really brought it to life. The arrows used are an outline of the arrow from
inside the photo, as well as the outline of the persons.

Logos

Desciption: Create three Logos for the same company with

different variations

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator

Date: October 30,2014
Course # and Section: Comm 130 Section 5
Instructor: Joel Judkins
Objective: Create three completely different, original logos to fit a

company or personal image that will appeal to the audience. Do not

imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator
pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use
an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete
the image before submitting.)

Process: I first sketched drafts to figure out what kind of designs I

would play with in Adobe Illustrator. Once I got the General idea of them
I went into Adobe Illustrator and started playing with different fonts and
colors to find what I liked the best. In the Top design I created an outline
of the rhino then filled it with shaped and changed the colors of them.
In the middle logo I used different pathfinding techniques and created
my own font. The bottom logo I extended the R in the name and made it
come up to look like the horn of a rhino.

Flier

Desciption: Black and white advertisement flier to promote

a graduate leadership conference

Programs Used: Adobe InDesign

Date: October 2, 2014
Course # and Section: Comm 130 Section 5
Instructor: Joel Judkins
Objective: Apply the design principles and use

appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep
links in InDesign intact.

Process: I first started with drawing up some sketches and figuring

out what kind of layout and design I wanted to use. I then used Adobe
InDesign and started putting things together. I used warped circular
shapes and used different transparencies for repetition, contrast and to
bring unity in the design. I chose this image because it was captivating,
the logo and body copy were given to me.
