SCOPE
The intent of this document is to provide a guide to designing and specifying new or
replacement lift services including travelators (moving walk), escalators and associated
structures for application within Australia.
Where the structure and installation is undertaken outside Australia, local codes and
standards will be applicable.
The document outlines the Qantas minimum requirements to ensure equipment specification
and installed product performance is commensurate with the quality expectations of Qantas
Group Property in regard to:
Safety
Availability
Reliability
Passenger comfort

2.1
LIFT SHAFTS
a) In general, the lift shaft shall be of reinforced concrete but in low rise buildings a structure
of concrete block with reinforcing rod and side fill is acceptable provided that sufficient
fastening substrate is available for landing entrances and guide rails. Other construction shall
be subject to the approval of the project manager.
b) The clearance between the lift car and the lift shaft walls shall be in accordance with the
requirements of AS 1735.
c) The presence of any areas in which production of toxic fumes may occur shall be
considered when the location of a lift shaft is to be determined.
d) In general, the lift shaft shall not be pressurised.
e) A ten per cent (10%) Shaft Plan Area ventilation hole shall be provided.
f) The effect on the Building Structure, with respect to component loads and stresses, by the
inclusion of a lift shaft, shall be accurately determined and all possible modes of failure shall
be analysed and the structure modified accordingly.
2.2
LIFT-WELL PITS
Lift pits must always extend to solid earth, in accordance with AS 1735.
Lift pits must be kept dry at all times and a 300mm square sump pit must be supplied in the lift
pit to a depth of 300mm.
For any situation where problems with considerable water seepage and collection occur, the
pit shall be supplied with a pump which shall be located externally to the lift well along with its
associated controls.

LIFT CARS
a) In general, the front of the car shall be of stainless steel construction with a car position
indicator and operating panel on the front wall of the car. Interior finish shall be stainless steel.
Tinted mirror feature panelling is to be fitted to the upper rear walls. A Project Specific Lift Car
Fitout brief will include:

Additional protection (In some circumstances, Qantas may require provision for
removable protective covers to the cab interior and may also require such covers to
be provided with the lift).
b) Lifts shall be designed for use by people with disabilities and shall be constructed such
that operating controls etc, are easily accessible in accordance with AS1735/12. Handrails to
be stainless steel sheathed fire retardant timber, bolted (not screwed) to the walls and
removable from within the lift car, on 3 sides of car. Audible floor announcements in
Australian female voice shall be provided to all passenger lifts.
c) All wall panels shall be removable from within the lift car.
d) The following shall be provided for in all lift cars:
Where the lift shaft services three or more floors, the lift shall be deemed to be an
emergency lift and shall have stretcher provision. The lift designer shall first consult
Qantas as to whether a lift servicing less than three floors shall be deemed an
emergency lift.
A lockable access hatch for outside recovery purposes built into the ceiling of the lift.
Alarm button
The intercom shall be connected in accordance with Legislation to both the company
security office and the building site manager.

The ceiling of the lift car shall be a drop ceiling type with perimeter recessed
fluorescent lighting.
The operation of the door drives shall not be affected by variance in lobby to lift shaft
air pressure or windage.
The operation of the lift door equipment shall be inline with the performance and
quality expectations of a quality commercial building.

FIRE SAFETY
a) All landing doors shall have a minimum fire rating as stipulated in the most recent version
of AS 1735.
b) All lift shafts shall have a minimum fire rating as stipulated in the most recent version of
AS 1735.
c) All ventilation panels on the lift cars shall be of the concealed type and located at the rear
and sides of the car, except in the case where the lift front and rear serve as access points to
the car. Then the ventilation panels shall be at the side of the car.
d) On all floors where indicator panels indicate the status of the lift services, the fire status
shall be installed.
e) The lift is to return to the designated floor in fire mode.
