Define the ff:
1. AMNION
- a thin membrane forming a closed sac about the embryos or fetuses of reptiles,
birds, and mammals and containing the amniotic fluid.
2. ANOXIA
- is a condition characterized by an absence of oxygen supply to an organ or a tiss
ue.
3. BLASTOCYST
- A thin-walled hollow structure in early embryonic development that contains a
cluster of cells called the inner cell mass from which the embryo arises.
4. CESAREAN SECTION
- also known as a C-section is a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby
through an incision in the mother's abdomen and a second incision in the
mother's uterus.
5. CHORION
- The outermost of the two fetal membranes (the amnion is the innermost) that
surround the embryo. The chorion develops villi (vascular finger-like projections)
and develops into the placenta.
6. DYSTOCIA
- abnormal, slow, or difficult childbirth, usually because ofdisordered or ineffective
contractions of the uterus.
7. EMBRYO
- the developing organism from fertilization to the end of the eighth week.
8. FETAL DISTRESS
- a compromised condition of the fetus, usually discovered during labor, characterized by amarkedl
y abnormal rate or rhythm of myocardial contraction.

9. FETUS
- the unborn young from the end of the eighth week after conception to themoment of birth.
10. GESTATIONAL AGE
- is the common term used during pregnancy to describe how far along the pregnancy is.
It is measured in weeks, from the first day of the woman's last menstrual cycle to the
current date. A normal pregnancy can range from 38 to 42 weeks. Infants born before 37
weeks are considered premature.

11. HYPOXIA
- A lower-than-normal concentration of oxygen in arterial blood, as opposed to anoxia, a
complete lack of blood oxygen. Hypoxia will occur with any interruption of normal respiration.

12. JAUNDICE
- a medical condition with yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, arising from
excess of the pigment bilirubin and typically caused by obstruction of the bile
duct, by liver disease, or by excessive breakdown of red blood cells.
13. LANUGO
- Downy hair on the body of a fetus or newborn baby. Lanugo is the first hair to be produced
by the fetal hair follicles, and it usually appears on the fetus at about 5 months of gestation.

14. MORULA
- is an embryo at an early stage of embryonic development, consisting of cells (called
blastomeres) in a solid ball contained within the zona pellucida.

15. NORMAL SPOTANEOUS DELIVERY

- occurs when a pregnant female goes into labor without the use of drugs or techniques
to induce labor, and delivers her baby in the normal manner, without forceps, vacuum
extraction, or a cesarean section.

16. OLIGOHYDRAMNIOS
- is an abnormal condition occurring during pregnancy resulting from lack of amniotic fluid
17. OVUM
- The reproductive cell of the female, which contains genetic information and participates in the act
of fertilization. Also popularly called the egg.

18. PLACENTA PREVIA

- a condition in which the placenta partially or wholly blocks the neck of the uterus, thus
interfering with normal delivery of a baby.(low lying placenta).

19. ABRUPTIO PLACENTA

- Early or pre-mature separation of placenta from the uterine wall.
20. POLYHYDRAMNIOS
- s the presence of excess amniotic fluid in the uterus. By definition, polyhydramnios is
diagnosed if the deepest vertical pool is more than 8 cm or amniotic fluid index (AFI) is
more than 95th percentile for the corresponding gestational age.

21. POST MATURE LABOR

- Pregnancy lasting beyond end of 42nd week.
22. PRE MATURE LABOR
- Onset of true labor contractions produce cervical changes after fetal viability but
before fetal maturity.
23. SHOW
- is the passage of a small amount of blood or blood-tinged mucus through the vagina
near the end of pregnancy.

24. SONOGRAM
- An image, as of an unborn fetus, produced by ultrasonography. Also called echogram, sonograph,
ultrasonogram.

25. TOCOLYSIS
- (also called anti-contraction medications or labor repressants) are medications used to
suppress premature labor.

26. VAGINAL BIRTH AFTER CESAREAN SECTION

- Women who had successful vaginal birth after cesarean section.
27. VERNIX CASEOSA
- A white cheesy substance that covers and protects the skin of the fetus and is still all over
the skin of a baby at birth. Vernix caseosa is composed of sebum (the oil of the skin) and
cells that have sloughed off the fetus' skin.

28. ZYGOTE
- a diploid cell resulting from the fusion of two haploid gametes; a fertilized ovum.
