Language focus: reviewing Present Simple Tense and Present Continuous Tense
Lesson aims:
To highlight uses of Present Simple Tense and Present Continuous Tense.
To contrast Present Simple Tense and Present Continuous Tense
To give students practice in using Present Simple Tense and Present Continuous
Tense
To develop students speaking competences.
Assumptions: I assume my students have already learnt the form and use of Present
Simple Tense and Present Continuous Tense
Anticipated problems: My students may need help in finding all he mistakes in exercise 2
from the worksheet.
Aids (materials): worksheets, poster, chalk, board, sheets of paper, laptop, and video
projector.
Methods: conversation, competition, game.
Interactions: lockstep, group work, T-Ss, Ss- T, Ss-Ss.
Organizational moment: The student on duty tells the absentees, the teacher writes them
in the register; then she checks the homework and the students correct the mistakes, if
necessary. Then the teacher divides the class into four groups.

Activity 1

Warm-up (Roll a ball and ask)

General competence: to interact in spoken communication


Specific competence: to get students interest and energize them
Method: dialogue
Procedure: Teacher throws a ball to a student and asks: Where are you from?
and the student answers; then he throws the ball to another student
and asks him a question and so on..

Activity 2 Lead-in
General competence: to understand oral messages
Specific competence: use of structures to convey meaning in speech;
Method: dialogue
Procedure: Each student receives a white flashcard and they are asked to close their
eyes. They have to think about a person that is important for them (mother, father, sister,
aunt...). Teacher tells them to think about what they do or they are doing and write their
thoughts on the flashcards. Then students read their sentences out loud.

Timing: 10 minutes

Activity 3 Presentation
General competence: comprehension of uses
Specific competence: to understand the form and uses of Present Simple Tense and
Present Continuous Tense
Method: explanation
Procedure: Teacher writes the title of the lesson on the board and tells the student they
are going to watch a power point material about the form and uses of Present Simple
Tense and Present Continuous Tense. There will be a parallel between the two tenses,
emphasizing the cases they are used in.

Timing: 10 minutes
Activity 4 Practice
General competence: to understand written and oral messages
Specific competence: use of structures to convey meaning in speech;
Method: discussion
Procedure: Teacher asks students to remember that they were spilt in to four groups: the
blue, the red, the yellow, and the green. Teacher divides the board into four and she puts
in each space a red paper, a yellow, a green and a blue one so that each group has its
own space to write in. Students will have to solve an exercise, to choose the correct tense
in some sentences. Each member of each group will come to the board and write the
correct sentence in the space of its group. The group that has the fewest mistakes wins.

Activity 5

Procedure: The students are still divided into four groups and they are asked to correct
some mistakes appeared in four sentences. Each group designates a student to solve the
task.

Giving homework

General competence: production of well-formed examples in writing


Specific competence: use of structures to convey meaning in speech;
Method: dialogue
Procedure: Students are asked to write their opinions about the statements they have
discussed in class. In the end, teacher gives students diploma for their involvement in the
activities and they are given marks, too.
