Jennifer Bartelt was a

the custom framing industry since the age of 18,
the creative visionary
long harbored the dream
of opening her own

October she made it happen. See page 3.

Army/Kiwanis speakers bureau

begins fourth year
A presentation given by a representative of the U.S. Army to the Menomonee
Falls Kiwanis Club last month is one of
many presentations that will occur throughout the area as part of a greater initiative.
Cpt. Dave Mathew, Commander at the
Milwaukee Recruiting Company, spoke
about the US Army/Kiwanis International
Speakers Bureau.
He said there are 30 key speeches
being given to key groups this fall, including
speeches to local Kiwanis chapters across
the nation.
Mathew later added: The Kiwanis and
Army partnership is in its fourth year at the
national level, but the Milwaukee Recruiting
Company has been working with Kiwanis
for longer than that at the local level. The
Army is working to continue its 2015 partnership with Kiwanis and is excited to make
local connections to maintain relationships
with clubs such as the Menomonee Falls
Kiwanis Club and move the partnership forward.
The reason why weve partnered with
them (the Kiwanis) is basically a lot of the
vision they push leadership in education
with the youth and pushing them to become
leaders in the community is right on par
with what the Army is focused on, Mathew
said prior to his presentation. The Army is
focused on education since we first started
recruiting about 80 years ago. The Army

has always talked about education.

Mathew cited multiple avenues for
education with the Army, such as concurrent admission process, which allows a
member of the Army to begin the process of
enrollment into a college of their choice so
that once a person leaves the Army they
have an in with the enrollment process.
We start pushing education from the
moment a soldier enlists in the Army,
Mathew said. Every year, about 8,000plus soldiers earn some sort of degree,
either a bachelors degree all the way up to
a Masters degree.
He said the biggest source of funding is
the tuition assistance program, under which
approximately $330 million was paid out
in 2013 to soldiers to receive education
benefits.
Mathew also cited the leadership
opportunities in the Army. He said the
biggest example is Colin Powell, who
started in the ROTC in college and became
a four-star general before later becoming
Secretary of State. He also cited other
examples of CEO in major corporations
having Army background.
The big thing for the community is
when youre looking for education and
employment opportunities, the military and
the Army specifically is hiring and we have
those opportunities, Mathew said.

Fairchild Equipment opens

Menomonee Falls facility
On Dec. 1, Fairchild Equipment, in conjunction with the Waukesha County Business
Alliance, celebrated the opening of their new
Menomonee Falls facility and expansion into
southern Wisconsin with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The ceremony took place at the newly
refinished facility located at N52 W13821
North Park Drive, Menomonee Falls.
What we say here at Fairchild is, you
will never go wrong doing right by your customers, said Van Clarkson, Fairchild
Equipment Southern Division President. We
are off to a great start, not only here in
Menomonee Falls, but also in our other
Southern Division branches in Beloit, Racine
and Sheboygan; and being in the
Menomonee Falls community, we will not
only be able to maintain our current customers, but anticipate doubling our growth in
the area of southern Wisconsin and the metro
Milwaukee area over the course of the next
few years.
Fairchild accompanied Waukesha
County Business Alliance representatives,
Ambassadors and members of the Waukesha
community administration through the newly
refinished facility that highlighted their full
service forklift shop, full-line parts department, new and used equipment for sale and
rental, along with their abundant outbound
fleet of service vans.
It is our job to make sure customers stay

in production, so if a forklift is down and cannot be brought into our service shop, were
ready to send a service technician to their
facility, said Gary Fairchild, President and
CEO of Fairchild Equipment. Not only that,
but if the customer doesnt have a unit to use
in place of the downed equipment, we do
offer rental equipment to make sure they can
keep their operation running smoothly.
Fairchild Equipment, founded by Gary
Fairchild, originated in 1985 as Yale
Materials Handling Green Bay. On Oct. 1,
Fairchild Equipment announced that the company agreed to acquire the Hyster material
handling dealership rights from the Heyrman
family, the owner of Milwaukee Engineering
Equipment (MEE) in southern Wisconsin. That
is in addition to acquiring the assets of
Schmidt Industrial Truck, Inc. from the Schmidt
family in Racine, and was effective as of July
1.
Today, the company has expanded and
has nine facilities designated into three divisions across the state of Wisconsin and
Minnesota and employs over 200 people.
Fairchild will continue to support and
enhance their business operations as a dealer for materials handling, warehouse, construction and agriculture equipment in their
respective territories. For more information

Boys basketball: Scoring woes

hurt Falls against Tosa
Wauwatosa East took advantage of a
second half scoring drought by
Menomonee Falls to open up a double
digit lead before holding on for a 48-62
victory Dec. 12.
Menomonee Falls trailed 7-6 after the
first quarter and stayed close to the Raiders
until the end of the second quarter, when a
three point basket by Bryce Beekman and a
layup by D.J. Verser opened up an 22-18

Tips on winterizing your HVAC system

(NAPSI)-Colder weather does not have
to cast a chill on your energy budget. By winterizing your home, you can enjoy increased
warmth and comfort and lower your heating
costs, which can significantly increase energy
savings.
Here are some steps you can take:
Caulk, patch or weather-strip any
areas around windows and doors that might
allow cold air in or warm air out. Your fireplace, too, is a source of heat loss, so close
the damper when the fireplace is not in use.
Put storm windows in place. New, insulated glass windows can provide important
energy savings. However, if you cannot
afford new windows, consider covering older
windows with plastic sheeting.
Check insulation in your attic, ceilings,
exterior and basement walls, floors and
crawl spaces to see if it meets the levels
(measured in R-values) recommended for
your area. It's also wise to insulate water
heaters and pipes to minimize heat loss.
Replace or clean filters in your heating
unit to improve airflow and efficiency.
Schedule an inspection of your system
by a heating professional. Heat pumps and
oil-fired furnaces need annual tune-ups; gasfired equipment can be serviced every other
year. Professional technicians are usually
trained to detect leaks, soot, rust, rot, corroded electrical contacts and frayed wires.
Next, take advantage of a programma-

ble thermostat and set the temperature lower

when you're away or sleeping.
Finally, if you need to replace your
home heating unit, consider a new furnace or
heat pump that meets standards for high efficiency, measured as annual fuel utilization
efficiency (AFUE) for furnaces and heating
seasonal performance factor (HSPF) for heat
pumps. The higher the AFUE or HSPF, the
more efficient the unit and the more likely you
are to save energy and money.
