2 Handover
2.1 Introduction
2.1.1 Application
Handover (HO) is one of the basic functions of the GSM. It enables users to keep continuous
call when they move in different cells. In addition, HO can optimize the system performance
by adjusting the traffic.
The HO process in the GSM involves the MS, BSS and MSC and other entities. The MS and
BTS together get the current information of the RL, combine the measurement results (MR)
of the UL and DL and send it to the BSC.
The BSC HO decision algorithm decides whether and in which way to handover according to
the MR and the actual situation of the radio network. It is the most important part in the HO
process for it decides the service quality and spectrum efficiency. The signaling process is
completed by the MSC, BSC, BTS and MS and the handover decision is realized in the BSC.
2.1.2 Availability
All the versions of the GSM BSS support this function.
