INTRODUCTION
a. Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing Application
The Wavemaker G3 Pipe Screening System uses guided waves to screen lengths of pipe for corrosion
or cracks. Conventional ultrasonic testing such as thickness gauging uses bulk waves and only test the region
of structure immediately below the transducer.
Figure 1.1 Schematic diagram showing the major components of the Wavemaker G3 system in a typical test
configuration
However even this strategy breaks down when part of the structure is inaccessible because
is it either buried or covered in insulation. It is much more attractive to be able to screen large area
of structure from a signal transducer from single location, and this is possible using guide wave
which propagate along the structure. The length of pipe that can be effectively screened on either
side of the test location in a single test depend on numerous factor and typically range from several
tens of meters for pipe in poor condition down to few meter for pipe in poor condition or with
certain type of coating.
b. Guide Wave Modes
Guided Waves Testing using flexural wave with torsional modes, the pipe walls forms a guide
for ultrasonics waves which, directs them down the length of the pipe. This methods is equally
sensitive to defect at any through wall position and sensitive to change in cross section (increase or
decrease). Reflection from weld or flanges are used as a reference.

c. Detection Treshold
Typically minimum detectable defect is 5% cross sectional loss, if pipe is in good general condition,
defect down to 1% have been detected.
II. SCOPE OF INSPECTION
a. Defect Classification
This inspection was done at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with Guide Wave Ultrasonic Wavemaker G3. This inpection
will give screening data of pipe with 3 estimating categories severity defect:
1. Category 1 (severe defect)
Estimating cross sectional change approximately more than half of the cross sectional of the
pipe area
2. Category 2 (medium defect)
Estimating cross sectional change approximately less than half of the cross sectional of the
pipe area
3. Category 3 (minor annomaly)
This level of corrosion is correlate with corrosion for which less than 10% of the cross
sectional area of the pipe have been lost and below reporting level
b. GPS Display
This field describes how the GPS position (if defined) will be displayed . Both angular and
Cartesian (UTM) coordinate system are supported
