Work Experience
Summer Internship at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, U.S.A.
(May-July, 2006)

Project Title: To Synthesize Poly (hydrido carbyne) via cheap and less
dangerous method and to characterize the physical properties of Diamond
films.
Project Guide: Dr. Patricia Bianconi
I did this project this summer (May-July, 2006) as a part of my summer internship.
Project was in the area of Material Science. The first part of the project was to discover a

new path, which should be cheap and less dangerous, to synthesize the Poly (hydrido
carbyne). Poly (hydrido Carbyne), which is known as PHC, has a great importance in
Material Science, because Diamond films can be made by just spinning the PHC films
under certain environment. For synthesizing the PHC, Ealier Chemists used to mix a
reaction mixture of Bromoform, Sodium Potassium alloy and THF by sonicator energy in
an Ar or Notrogen atmosphere. But this is not a very good way to make PHC because
sodium potassium alloy (NaK) is a pyrophobic compound, which means, it catches fire
very easily, and also reaction is very expensive because it uses sonicator energy. So In
my internship, I had to work on these two, and I got success in both of them. I used Na2K
in place of NaK, which was not pyrophobic, and simple stirring was used to mix the
reaction mixture in place of using expensive sonicator energy.
The second part of the project was to get the physical properties of the Diamond films,
which were made from PHC. So, to get physical properties, I used AFM, XPS and
Goniometer machines.
Apart from all this, I learnt how to order chemicals and how to set own work space.

Summer Project at IIT Kanpur, India

(May-July, 2005)

Project Title: The synthesis of a new Schiff Base Complex of Zn(II).

Project Guide: Dr. V. Chandrasekhar, Mr. P.Thilagar.
Synthesis of ferrocene carboxaldehyde by using reported procedure and a new schiff base
{1,3- Bis- (ferrocene-amino)-propan-2-ol} has been synthesized by the interaction of 1,3Diamino-2-propanol with already prepared ferrocene carboxaldehyde in benzene as a
solvent. The metalation has been done in between the schiff base and the zinc (II)
chloride (anhydrous) by taking dichloro methane as a solvent.

Mechanical Engineering Project at IIT Kanpur, India (awarded by best

project award among 200 students), (Jan. 2004-March 2005).
Project Title: A Mechanical Drum
Project Guide: Dr. Ashish Garg, Mr. Anil Jha.
A mechanical drum was designed and manufactured by using different techniques of a
manufacturing lab such as Lathe Machine, Drilling Machine. I have worked in a group of
five students which improved my working skills in a group.

Material Engineering Project at IIT Kanpur, India

(Jan 2004-March 2005)

Project Title: The Tyne Bridge

Project Guide: Dr. Ashish Garg, Dr. V.K. Jain.
Design and manufacturing of The Tyne Bridge (model) by applying the methods of Arc
Welding, Gas Welding and Sheet Metal Forming. I have worked in the group of three
students.

Term Paper at IIT Kanpur, India

(Aug.-Nov., 2005)

Title: Platinum group metal complexes contain pincer ligand.

Submitted to: Dr. V.Chandrasekhar
This term paper was based on the last ten years researches of Dr. Gerard Van Koten on
Pincer Chemistry. This is a type of review article on pincer chemistry.

Publication
My summer internship work has been submitted in Diamond & Related materials, and
its a one of the good journal of U.S.A.
