WATER WOES
By Bob Vavrek, senior agronomist, North-Central Region
July 9, 2014
Its just one problem after another for Poa annua this
season. Most of the Poa on the green pictured in this
regional update somehow managed to survive an
exceptionally harsh winter only to succumb to basal rot
anthracnose. A recent bout of moisture stress caused by a
broken irrigation mainline pipe seems to have been the
trigger that incited a rapid outbreak of disease activity.
Once again, we are reminded that anthracnose truly is a
stress-related disease. Lets hope that yesterdays fertilizer
application and tomorrows fungicide treatment can check
further injury to the putting surface.

Just one short period of wilt due to a broken mainline was

the trigger that caused a rapid outbreak of basal rot
anthracnose to Poa annua on this putting surface.

GCSAA Grassroots Ambassador Program off to fast start

July 1 was the official beginning of the GCSAA
Grassroots Ambassador program. The program, which
has been split into four classes or start times had 55
members fully vetted and enrolled in the 2014
Summer Ambassador Class. The next class, which will
be the fall 2014, will be vetted during the months of
August and September and will begin service on Oct.
1.

Ambassadors are still needed and recruitment will be

an ongoing activity. If members of your chapter have
shown an interest in being an Ambassador, look for an
email from Kaelyn Seymour, government relations
specialist, in August for your approval of those
members. Additionally, if you know a GCSAA member
who would make a good Ambassador, please forward
names to Seymour at kseymour@gcsaa.org.

Since the program launched, the Ambassadors have

taken and encouraged others to take action within
through action alerts resulting in more than 250
letters being sent to Congress on the proposed EPA
Waters of the United State (WOTUS) rule. The
Grassroots Ambassador will also be participating in
August Recess Activities across the country, talking to
members of Congress about WOTUS as the key GCSAA
talking point during the August Recess. GCSAA held an
Ambassadors training on July 16 to prepare the
Ambassadors to talk about the WOTUS issue.

Rounds 4 Research
The Rounds 4 Research program was designed to address a
critical shortage in turfgrass research funding by auctioning
donated rounds of golf online.
The program is administered by the Environmental Institute for
Golf, the philanthropic organization of the Golf Course
Superintendents Association of America.
Rounds 4 Research allows GCSAA chapters and turfgrass
foundations to participate as fundraising partners with the vast
majority of proceeds going back to those organizations. In this
way, these organizations can direct the proceeds to specific
projects that will have the most significant impact in their local
areas.
The EIFGs Rounds 4 Research is an expansion of the innovative
program that was introduced by the Carolinas Golf Course
Superintendents Association. After the Carolinas GCSA realized
the programs scope had grown beyond what it could
administer, it offered the program to GCSAA. As GCSAAs
philanthropic organization, the EIFG was the natural choice to
oversee this exciting fundraising effort.
Why is it important?
In order to operate successfully, todays golf facilities need
resources in place to fuel innovation, address challenges
brought on by Mother Nature and respond to regulatory
pressures. The Rounds 4 Research program is addressing the
critical shortage of funding for ongoing, university-based
agronomic research, education, advocacy programs and course
operations.
With your support, you can help us keep the future of our game
green.
