History
More than 20 years ago, our founder, Richard G. Newman, and a handful of Ashland Inc. employees shared a dream of creating an
industry-leading firm dedicated to making the world a better place. On April 6, 1990, AECOM evolved to become an independent firm
formed by the merger of five Ashland entities. While our official founding was in 1990, some of our predecessor firms had distinguished
histories dating back to the early 1900s.
Since then, more than 40 companies have joined AECOM, and in 2007, we became a publicly traded company on the New York Stock
Exchange (NYSE: ACM).
Today, listed on the Fortune 500 as one of Americas largest companies, AECOM's talented employees including architects,
engineers, designers, planners, scientists and management professionals now serve clients in more than 150 countries around the
world.
AECOMs technical expertise and creative excellence come from the rich history of some of the worlds finest engineering,
environmental, construction management as well as planning and design companies. From transportation, energy and water systems to
enhancing environments and creating new buildings and communities, our vision remains constant to make the world a better place.
What sets us apart is our collaborative way of working globally and delivering locally. A trusted partner to our clients, we draw together
teams of engineers, planners, architects, landscape architects, environmental specialists, economists, scientists, consultants, as well as
cost construction, project and program managers dedicated to finding the most innovative and appropriate solutions to create, enhance
and sustain the worlds built, natural and social environments.
We are proud to be recognized in Engineering News-Records 2013 Top 500 Design Firms' rankings, where AECOM is ranked #1
overall. And, for four consecutive years, Newsweek included AECOM on its U.S. Companies Green Rankings list.
Other notable achievements include being named one of the Worlds Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere Institute and as one

Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing

From the start of any project, we understand the need to develop a building where the internal environment is
balanced, providing comfortable spaces for occupants while keeping carbon emissions and running costs as low

as possible. Achieving this requires an integrated approach, working with all members of the design team to
ensure that the electrical systems are strategically integrated into the project.
We have a rich heritage in the design of environmentally responsible, high performance buildings around the
world. With leading experts in all aspects of building physics supported by state-of-the-art building performanceanalysis tools and sophisticated design technology, we bring powerful thinking to any design team worldwide,
whatever the project. Working collaboratively, we will always pursue a sustainable solution exploring the use of
the building's location, orientation, shading and structural form to drive down the need for mechanical
installations. Our sustainable, high-performance, low-energy solutions will be integrated into the very fabric of the
building to create light and airy spaces for living and working. With international offices home to local experts, we
bring leading-edge thinking to projects worldwide in an approach that ensures compliance with local regulations
and standards.
From day one, we work to ensure that the electrical distribution requirements, standby power generation, lighting,
building security and integrated IT systems are robust, safe and cost effective in terms of product specification
and long-term running costs.
With astute commercial understanding, we respond to the need for today's buildings to be designed to meet as
yet undefined future needs. This includes designing systems with flexibility, and enabling installations to be easily
adapted for different uses as they arise in the years to come. Our whole-life costing analysis of proposed systems
is an invaluable service, empowering client and design teams by providing up-front thinking about operational
costs.

Sustainability
Building Engineering has accepted the challenge to design buildings that touch the world lightly in terms of their
environmental impact. Designing to a sustainable, low-carbon agenda is second nature to us. We are aware of
our responsibility as scientists and engineers working at the forefront of developing our towns and cities
worldwide. We understand the challenges facing our planet and accept that we must take an active role in
exploring new ways for us all to live in more sustainable ways. This is a critical time. Climate change is making us
all reconsider how we move about the world, build, and occupy buildings. AECOM is a recognized thought
leader, and an active participant at every level from global to local, from government agenda to social agenda, in
ways to challenge, review and approach the move to a more sustainable built environment for us all.

Dr Chau Chak Wing Building

Bricklayers have called their involvement in its construction a career highlight, and soon it will be where the next generation of
business careers are nurtured.
Designed by internationally-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the University of Technology, Sydneys new Business School, with its
rippling faade and angled columns, is one of the most iconic buildings currently under construction in Australia, setting a precedent for
future architectural design.
Having been referred to as a cluster of tree houses, a crumpled paper bag and an urban sandcastle, the Dr Chau Chak Wing
buildings unique masonry faade - contorting and twisting in a three-dimensional plane for the full height of the 14-storey structure created structural engineering challenges requiring innovative solutions.
In collaboration with UTS and the brick supplier, AECOM developed a unique brick, tie, mortar and backing system that solved the load,
constructability and complex geometrical issues, allowing a near impossible feat of engineering to be realised.
There is no building in the world that has bricks like this, Stephen Giblett, AECOMs Building Structures Lead, told ABC Radios By
Design program.
The bricklayers on this project are very proud of what theyve done, because theyve taken standard bricklaying and theyve gone back
to being the grand masons of centuries past to create something beautiful.
One of the bricklayers even has a tattoo on his arm of the brickswhich shows the pride they have in what theyve achieved, and
which results in the buildings defining characteristic.
Its not just the outside of the Dr Chau Chak Wing building where boundaries are being pushed.
AECOM worked with UTS to embed several sustainability features within the building that again set it apart as a 21st century learning
space.
One of the challenges AECOM faced in partnership with UTS was how to heat and cool the building sustainably. The interior consists
of various different zones - lecture theatres, offices and meeting rooms all requiring different methods of temperature control.
The solution? Provide dedicated air conditioning units for each zone, and sensor technology to minimise wastage when a zone is
unoccupied. The building also uses a higher than normal volumes of outdoor air to cool fan coil units.
This fresh-air feature, combined with shorter air conditioning ducts means fans dont need to work as hard, and air-cooled chillers mean
the building does not consume much water in the process. In fact, water usage is kept to a minimum across the building, with a fire
water reclamation system and water-efficient appliances fitted throughout.
The Dr Chau Chak Wing Business School is scheduled to open late this year. Listen to AECOMs Stephen Giblett discuss AECOMs
work on this iconic project on ABC Radios By Design Program.
