MSE 2001: Principles and Applications of Engineering Materials

INSTRUCTOR: Prof. Faisal Alamgir: faisal.alamgir@mse.gatech.edu

Office: Room 373 Love Building, Phone: 404-385-3263
Office Hours: TBA
HOMEWORK:
Homework assignments will be given periodically. It is a good practice to work these
problems. Homework will not be collected although there will be at least one
problem on each of the examinations similar to a previously assigned homework
problem.
EXAMINATIONS: There will be four exams in total. If a student has a legitimate
conflict and will miss the exam that student must reschedule the exam prior to the
examination day. Only personal calculators that are non-programmable can be used
on examinations.
GRADE: Your final grade will be computed based upon your performance on exams
according to the following progressive scheme: 3 Midterm exams -(first is 15%,
second is 20% and third is 25%), Final- 40%
Attendance Policy:
Students are encouraged to attend lectures and are responsible for all material
presented during lectures.
CLASS DESCRIPTION for MSE 2001:
Prerequisites: CHEM 1310.
Basic principles describing the structure and properties of engineering materials and
the application of the basic principals directed toward understanding the relationships
between the development of microstructure and the effects of microstructure on the
properties discussed. The properties discussed include mechanical, chemical,
electrical and thermal.
TEXTBOOK: James P. Schaffer, Ashok Saxena, Stephen D. Antolovich, Thomas
H. Sanders, Jr. and Steven B. Warner, The Science and Design of Engineering
Materials, Second Edition, Irwin, Chicago, IL, 1999.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
I expect all students in this class to respect the Georgia Tech honor code and
behave in a professional manner when it comes to academic integrity. Engineers have
a responsibility to the public who ultimately will use the products of their intellectual
creations. Trust is very important in the engineering profession and it begins well
before we enter the workplace. Any students violating the honor code will be turned

over to the office of Academic Integrity, Dean of Students to investigate the

incident(s).
1. In this course, students are encouraged to study together (including working
together on the homework assignments).
2. Students are to neither receive nor give help to others during exams.
3. Calculators will be provided for use during exams. The use of personal calculators
is not allowed during exams.
4. Any student suspected of academic misconduct will be referred to the Georgia Tech
Office of Student Integrity.
