Communicative approach

The communicative approach (in English, Communicative Approach) is also known as

communicative language teaching (English, Communicative Language Teaching), as
nocional-funcional approach (in English, Notional-functional Approach) or as a functional
approach (in English, Functional Approach). Its name suggests that this educational model
is intended to enable the learner to a real communication - not only in the oral aspect, but
also in the written - with other speakers of the LE; for this purpose, in the instructional
process often texts, recordings and authentic materials are used and are activities that seek
to imitate with fidelity the reality of outside the classroom.
The weakening of the oral approach and the audiolingual method favours the blossoming of
new didactic proposals. At the end of the sixties of the century XX some British linguists Candlin C. and H. Widdowson, - among others believed that the objective in learning the
you should be the development not only of linguistic competence and communicative
competence . This new conception of the teaching / learning of the LE collects contributions
from several areas of research, such as the British functional Linguistics (e.g. J. Firth and
M. A. K. Halliday), American Sociolinguistics (for example, D. Hymes, J. Gumperz and W.
Labov) and the philosophy of language or pragmalinguistics (e.g., J. Austin and J. Searle).
At the request of the Council of Europe, European scholars combine their efforts to develop
an alternative according to the social, economic, political and cultural reality of modern
Europe; the fruit is called the communicative approach.
Communication is not a mere product, but rather a process which is carried out with a
specific purpose, between specific partners, in a specific situation. Therefore, it is not
enough with the learners to assimilate an accumulation of data - vocabulary, rules,
functions...; It is essential, in addition, that they learn to use those skills to negotiate
meaning. For this purpose should be engaged in real work, where the language is a means
to an end, not an end in itself; p example, check a schedule of planes to know if there is a
direct flight from Barcelona to Singapore, and no, p. example, to respond to questions from
the book. Oral interaction between students is very common: in pairs, trios, in larger
groups or whole class.
To ensure a real communication, the tasks are governed by these three principles:

Information vacuum. Between the partners there is a real communication need,

since each has to find something that only your partner knows, and if not find out it,
you can not make your own task.
Freedom of expression. The speaker decides the content (what to say), the form
(how to say it), tone, time, etc.
Feedback. Verbal and non-verbal reactions of your partner tell the student on what
extent is reaching its objective in the conversation.

The theatrical or role playing games (in English, role play) come to real communication, in
which participants receive feedback (verbal or physical) immediate peers, and can thus
calibrate the success in the game and in the use of the language. It is estimated that the
games, in addition to developing the communicative competence, can beneficially
influencing motivation.
Projects are typical tasks of the communicative approach, which can last from a while up to
one academic year. In a typical project began by deciding the issue and participants;
prepares a plan and a schedule of work and shared roles; to look up information and this is
processed; a final report is drawn up or exposed in front of the class.

The syllabus are usually designed from notions or functions, but also situations, themes,
structures, etc. can be incorporated The language is working on the level of text or speech,
beyond the phrases. The basic unit is the paragraph as written language and in the oral
statement. This implies that they must take care as important components in
communication such as cohesion and coherence.
The LE is a vehicle for communication in class, not only the object of study. For this reason,
used both the realization of tasks for explanations, clarifications, etc., reserving the L1 for
special cases.
The presentation of grammar is usually inductive, although some brief grammatical
explanations are also given when it deemed appropriate.
The text book is considered a valuable material support, but not the axis of the instruction.
Also used other types of teaching materials - for example, cardboards for problem solving
in group tasks - and authentic - magazines, tourist brochures, tickets for public transport,
etc., as well as objects of everyday use: a camera, an alarm clock, etc. (if the occasion
requires, with the respective instruction manuals).
The Repertoire of roles played by Professor is quite broad: analyze the needs of the
students, create situations of communication, organize activities, advice, participate as one
partner more, observe the development of tasks in the classroom, develop materials, etc.
In short, the role of the teacher is facilitate learning, encouraging, at the same time,
cooperation between the students, who are the true protagonists; This is, therefore, an
learner-centered approach.
In the evaluation of the students it serves both the correction and the fluidity. The
assessment is not limited to the product, but it covers the entire process; It is to determine
at what point or in what sense it is necessary to amend any aspect of the instructive
process.
The communicative approach is a success during the decades of 1980s and 90s of the
century XX, while over the past years has been ceding ground to the approach by tasks,
that can well be considered his heir. It is often taken as a model face methods and
traditional approaches, focusing on grammar. In reality, it is an overcoming of the previous
models, since it does not deny the importance of linguistic competence, but goes beyond,
in search of an authentic communicative competence.

Enfoque comunicativo

incorporar situaciones, temas, estructuras, etc.
aula, elaborar materiales, etc.
competencia comunicativa.
