INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES in
Civilian Welfare Foundation

I am a part of this society and find myself indebted to it-which is why social work has turned out to be my first priority. God has sent us here with a
purpose-the purpose of doing something for a society where inequality
persists. There are many who are deprived of the privileges that we have
received through our life. I do not possess the ultimate powers of God but I
do believe that we all possess the power of contributing something once
we come together as one. I hoped for an honest organisation created by
honest people. Things actually started to take shape when I came across a
few kids, with intense passion and concern for the society. Their planning
process for contributing to the society with personal funding of their pocket money and scholarship resources dragged me to their organisation. It
made me think of the times we live in where every man is for himself and
the devotion of these initiators who would give anything to give back to the
society, even if it does not permit the success of their careers. They have
stood strong and firm with their ideals and made the underprivileged and
dierently able their own. Hence I decided that CWF was the only organisation for me where I would feel honoured to have been a part of it. They
had come to me for a donation. I considered their proposal while I thought
if I was even adequately suitable of being a part of their organisation. Finally I accepted their proposal and through time, I have come to realise
they have accepted me as part of their family. Presently, I find myself extremely satisfied to have chosen this organisation and I am thankful to God
for that. There exists numerous organisations which are inclined towards glamour or entertainment but today I concentrate on only working with CWF and making a change in

After working with CRY in an informal manner in and around Pyarabagan slum for 3 years, Civilian Welfare Foundation (CWF) ocially started collaborating with CRY (Child Rights & You)
from October 2014. CRY is a 35 year old organisation working for Child Rights and Education
throughout India. This collaboration aims to intervene more seriously and passionately the educational problems related to Pyarabagan slum children in Kolkata.
For the last one year, Indian populace except men majorly has been under huge
threat of sexual violence and the increasing number of protests and rallies demanding government measures to curtail it had
become a regular feature. But what plays

the traditional patriarchal system for today's degrading social condition, others
blame the economic and social independence aswomen, specially in terms of how
they dress, as the real reason behind the
several rape incidents happening in different parts of the country. CWF has been an
active participant in these rallies and
protests and has conducted
an active survey around what
drives an individual to such
protest marches. We presented
this research paper named
Gender (in) sensitivity among
Protesters and Queer Men at
the National Queer Conference.
Times of India, Hindustan Times
and Ekdin showcased the paper
Durga Puja is one of the most celebrated festivals of India. Durgostsav is observed as a "Sarbojonin" (all inclusive) celebration that is meant for all individuals beyond their language, colour, religious views, caste and gender. Civilian Welfare
Foundation last year (2013) conducted a study on the accessibility quotient of some of the most reputed puja pandals of
the city & most of them were found to be inaccessible by the disabled/specially abled people. In 2014 , this year Civilian
Welfare Foundation followed up for those 30 pandals, went with disabled people ( varied range of disability from blindness
to wheelchair bound) and found shocking response even when they wereinformed about the visit. Both the survey was
covered by all the major dailies of Kolkata Indian Express, Times of India, The Hindu, Hindustan Times, Ekdin & Ei Samay.

Entry to Durga Puja pandals prove to be a huge challenge for disabled persons, a survey of 30 pandals in the city has
shown.
A study conducted by Civilian Welfare Foundation (CWF), an organisation working for the rights of the disabled, has
documented the problems encountered by the differently-abled while visiting pandals .
The voluntary organisation selected 30 pandals in the city with daily footfalls of more than 4 lakh. CWF requested
paralympic athletes to participate in the survey.
Despite prior information, about half of them (14 puja committees of the 30 surveyed) advised us not to bring disabled
people to the pandals as they did not have the requisite infrastructure, Shuvojit Moulik, president of CWF, told The
Hindu . At a popular pandal in south Kolkata, CWF representatives accompanying national para-triathlon champion
Mohammed Gaffar asked for a wheelchair. To their surprise, they were offered a stretcher instead.
Some pandals provided wheelchairs but there were no ramps. Volunteers at one pandal even pushed a disabled woman
into a long queue of pandal hoppers. Athletes had to grapple with stairs to gain entry.
The CWF representatives who undertook the survey also found that there were no provisions for priority access for the
disabled.
We were surprised by the lack of sensitivity of the organisers, Mr. Moulik said.
National para-swimming champion Manarul Hossain who visited pandals for the first time asked, Why cannot
disabled people enjoy the pujas like able-bodied individuals?
Representatives of the CWF said that the survey this year was a continuation of a reality check last year when they
found that only seven per cent of the pandals had made provisions for access for the disabled.

The preamble to the Constitution of India speaks about Equality in status and
opportunity for all, the constitution also screams Right to life as one of the fundamental rights in Article 21, wherein the Right to Healthcare is an integral part.
HypotheticallySo far so goodBUTwhat about reality?? CWF tried to find
out through a case-study based research about the basic healthcare status of
the Transgender individuals in and around Kolkata. We are very much grateful
to Amitie Trust & People like us (PLUS) who helped us in getting respondents
for the study. The study showed there was hardly any accessible health care
facilities for transgenders. The study was published in local, national
and international news media and academic spaces (Times of India,
Alzazeera, Indian Express, Hindustan times , Kafila, Ei samay, Ekdin,
Gay star news, Qwerty, India post live etc) and still now being covered by different media groups.
The Research on Transgender basic healthcare is a landmark in CWF and had an outreach of over
5 lakh people . The plight of transgenders in and around Kolkata was even discussed in a seminar
in Brighton , UK , based on the report !!

Documentary on Pyarabagan Slum is the newest project to look into the lives of slum children who have
been enrolled into schools by CWF along with their parents & how they feel it has made a dierence to
their childs life. We are also trying to understand what their teachers & school principals think of the
Right to Education Act . The documentary aims to understand the mindset of this unique slum. We wish
to screen the documentary in dierent cities and film festivals throughout India and abroad and create
awareness on the condition of education and its possible interventions in underprivileged slums

Support Paralympics is an
unique approach to promote Paralympians in India, where we offer a platform to sponsor individual
Para-athletes with as less
as Rs.1000/month. This
initiative is specially targeted for middle class
people whose minimal investment can support future Indian champions. As
a result of the sponsorship
the sponsored athletes are
performing well at the
State as well as at the national level. Saheb Hosaain
& Rubia Chatterjee are 2 of
the 8 athletes supported
by this project. The project
includes media and policy
advocacy for the Paralympians and aims to get
their due recognition. In
